Freezes then restarts nvlddmkm.sys

I looked at your registry key for graphics, you need to create the new value in the right hand side so you would end up with five entries, the default value of 5 I mentioned is hardwired into the drivers so doesn't show an entry by default.
Did you look at this i posted it a couple of post back ?
As for values you are telling me to set for tdrdelay am a bit confused on what is the correct values and Hexidecimal or Decimal to try here.
Read other articles plus this one give differences then yours. Below.
1. Goto registry editor (start -> run -> regedit)
2. Navigate yourself to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/GraphicsDrivers (make sure GraphicsDrivers is highlighted).
3. Right click -> New -> DWORD (32-bit) value -> Name it: TdrDelay -> double click it -> Set it to A (hexadecimal) or 10 (decimal).

I came across was similar driver resets/ crashes caused by something called the MPO layer, there are instructions on Nvidia's site on how to disable it to test
Articles mention for flicker and stutter problems it fixes.
Disabling MPO (Multiplace Overlay) can improve some desktop apps flicker or stutter issues
nothing here
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforc...ltiplane-overlay-is-causing-graphical-corrup/

There was a recent driver update last Thursday and i cleaned uninstalled old driver with DDU uninstaller in safe mode, then installed NVIDIA 528.02
Hasn't crashed since last Saturday so far, but can go a month without doing it as seen here before in past posts of mine.

The value for the key can be set to either A if the Hexidecimal button is active or 10 if the decimal button is active, the example is pretty straightforward in explaining that one or the other value is acceptable, they mean the same thing just in a different base.
For the sake of ease of reading the key just set it to decimal and enter 10 as the value.

It is possible that the MPO could cause other issues than just stuttering and flickering, but if you don't want to try it that is your call.

All these options are best guess at the end of the day of things to try to solve your issue, unless someone else can say exactly what is causing your problems you can either try things one at a time to see if it helps or not.
Maybe just updating the graphics driver will have solved the issue and you may never know what was causing it. 👍

I seem to have the same problems as @jds63 ...

My specs:
Zotac RTX 4090 Trinity (new part purchased mid-Dec 2022)
5800X3D
X570 Asus Crosshair VIII wifi
4x 16GB 3200CL14
1000W Corsair HX1000, using the official Corsair 600W 12VHPWR cable (the cable was purchased with the 4090, the PSU is purchased around Sept 2021)
1x M.2 SSD Samsung 980 Pro 2TB (new part purchased mid-Dec 2022)
2x SATA SSDs (Samsung 850EVO 1TB, Plextor M5S 250GB)

ReBAR activated.
I was not aware that there's a Zotac vbios update for 4090, not sure if my particular has that vbios.

Display devices:
Main 4k144Hz monitor, connected through DP, DP 1.4 DSC
1440p60Hz monitor, connected through DP no DSC
HTC Vive (original), connected through HDMI
And occasionally a forth portable display device through a DP-to-HDMI cable

Software:
Fresh installed Windows 11 when I bought the 4090 and the M.2 SSD mid-December.
This exact configuration is less than a month old.
I believe I'm currently using the 527.56 (Dec 8, 2022) as I was unaware there's a new driver a few days ago.
I have very few system services installed since the Win11 installation, just discord and game launchers.

Everything works perfectly fine most of the time, except that:
1. When gaming on the main monitor, watching youtube on the second, if I fiddle around with the youtube video like entering full screen, dragging it around and changing display resolution, sometimes both screens go black, and sometimes it does not recover and the machine restarts.
2. Sometimes when starting Steam VR, all screens go black, and again sometimes it recovers sometimes it does not.
3. Last night the Steam VR starting issue got worse, and consistently BSOD every time I start Steam VR immediately when I started windows. The BSOD has a stop code of "SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION" and the source of failure is "nvlddmkm.sys". This is actually why I end up here in this post

I am not very convinced that this is a hardware or power issue, I went through these use cases:
1. Playing Cyberpunk 2077 - encountered no issues at all, nothing from startup to end
2. 3D Mark loop runs
3. Playing some other older less known games at constant 144 FPS for entire day - no problem
4. Running Stable Diffusion hypernetwork training for 24 hours - no problem at all, very stable

As for the hardware, only the 4090 and M.2 SSD is new. I was using a 1080 with another older lower-performance M.2 SSD in Windows 10 prior to the upgrade.

I'll try to update to latest drivers and update the vbios to see if it helps.

I believe I'm currently using the 527.56 (Dec 8, 2022) as I was unaware there's a new driver a few days ago.
Seems as though for me past drivers did not solve issues, but let's see if 528.02 does.
Fresh installed Windows 11
I recently tried clean install to rule out that.

4. Running Stable Diffusion hypernetwork training for 24 hours - no problem at all, very stable
Case with me i can do burn in test and play graphic intense games for hours with no issues ?
Probably is not a hardware issue.
I feel this nvlddmkm.sys is common in most of these cases with graphic tdr other errors.

The BSOD has a stop code of "SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION" and the source of failure is "nvlddmkm.sys". This is actually why I end up here in this post
This is a different error then i receive in ways of System Service Exception I never seen this on mine or did i ever get a blue screen.
My errors are what i have seen in Event Viewer>Administrator Events from time and date issues occurred.
Do you get a dump file if so need to analyze them with programs, will give more info.

I think an important point to note here is that although the entry being concentrated on is nvlddmkm.sys this may not be the source of the issue. The display driver is responding to a function call that is either corrupt or missing, but what is calling that function in the first place?

The nvlddmkm.sys driver is doing it's job, it is resetting or attempting to, but is not always successful therefore the error, it just happens to be the last entry to be logged most of the time.
Is the issue to do with Nvidia driver elements or is DirectDraw or the Desktop Windows Manager or one of a multitude of other functions involved in even simple tasks such as moveing the mouse across a window border.

The fact that the error can be different on each system and then completley absent on other systems (using even similar or identical components) and tends to be intermittent in nature tends to point to a culprit other than just the Nvidia drivers.
I know this doesn't make it easier to pinpoint but I feel that just concentrating on the Nvidia driver as both cause and effect is not always the correct avenue of investigation.
Just my take on it.

Hi everyone, I'm having the same problem.

My current PC:

10700k
Asus ROG Z490 Mini ITX
16GB DDR4 3600mhz CL16
Source SFX 750W Platinum
RTX 3070 MSI

I had no GPU for months, so I bought a 42cm Oled C2 4k TV to use as a monitor and an RTX 3070 so in the first few days when I was playing AC Valhalla it gave a black screen and I had to reset it. I thought "some random silly mistake". After that, it didn't lock in games anymore, but I play a little something around 10 hours a week. I work from home office so I use the computer 10 hours a day. And about 2 times a week it was freezing and getting a black screen. And one of them, after a black screen, gave BSOD, I didn't get to see what the error was, it was very fast.

I updated the motherboard's Bios to the latest version and removed the riser cable (I was suspicious of it) I used it for a week without problems until last week 01/06/2023 it happened that the screen froze for 2 seconds and the video erased and came back I think removing the riser eased problem because it always crashed I had to reset the pc now it seems to happen less constantly and it just hangs and erases screens for a few seconds and comes back without having to reset ... and today 01/11/2023 I went to drag the chrome window and it happened again since I started tests with an updated motherboard and without the riser in 11 days this happened 2x both using the pc at work i must have played about 10 or 15 hours in those days and in game it didn't happen.

Today after it happened, I updated to the latest driver (05/01/2023 528.02) until then I had a driver from the end of November.

Next tests if it happens again:
- Use source I have of 850w gold
- Format W11 to version 22h2
- Format W11 for version 21h2 as the current version heard rumors of - black screen and freezes.
- Format for W10.

Not solving these 4 attempts

I'm going to borrow my nephew's PC for 2 or 3 weeks and use my card on it. Because as it takes time to happen, the error is kind of random and takes time.

If the problem continues, I will open the RMA of the board

If the problem doesn't work, I suspect that my motherboard has a problem with PCI Express. (I don't see any other problem if I do all these tests.)

What NVidia driver version are you using?... I found 522.25 to be best ATM.

I had artifacts appearing over my screen with newer drivers.

Having gone from a EVGA GTX1080sc to EVGA RTX3070ti, I have to turn off G-Sync! otherwise I get shimmering and mouse stutters loading and using games.

This is a known issue with my Dell monitor.

Another factor that may affect the display, artifacts, shimmering etc., may be with the monitors firmware needing an update, however that is not usually the cause of crashes, freezes and BSODs.
It is worth checking the manufacturers support page for details.

Almost identical problems?
Started a few days ago I would think ?
Now we have arrived at your problem, um I mean I.

Completely different, sometimes I can play for hours, earlier I could even force the crash - just play and it comes after like 10min.
Benchmarks running fine - even after 1 hour complete stress on it

For me it manifests itself with short howling of the GPU fan for a few seconds before the picture goes black. I can still understand my friends in Teamspeak - talk to them, but as soon as I start to generate a new image (e.g. with Alt+Tab), the sound starts to stutter and the system hangs. Picture still black.

Earlier I looked at a forced crash times on HWINfo and the temperatures + logs activated.
The temperatures, voltage and everything is completely ok at the time of the crash. (71.3 degrees) So I exclude an overheating, which leaves the question why the fans turn to 100%.

Since this was mentioned before, at a crash I could find the following message in the log:
Faulting application name: dwm.exe, version: .. im not sure how to transelate the rest
so anything with dwm.exe is happening aswell?

-----------------
What I have tried everything?
Despair...

- Windows reinstall I ignore for the time being because when researching many said it was still after a format
- ddu several times (properly) - currently I try an older driver, will definitely still give feedback
- PC made clean, GPU, RAM all new plugged in etc
- some wrote that they solved the problem (dmw.exe) by installing XBOX accessories APP and re-plugging the controller ??

Some seem to have success with an older Windows patch, which I think is nonsense because this error has occurred with more and more people and also scattered on different time. Anyone can give feedback about this?

Honestly? I am stumped
I'll steal the 980 from the neighbor again and see if the error also occurs....

Get your point especially from beginning of your post. As said before even thought was the graphics card, but using it in games gave no issues.
Said can be other drivers or software in system too.Even PSU but that rules out on a new one. This is what i see in Event Viewer>Administrator Events just before time of restart and of course a Kernel Power (41) which will throw an error if computer restart without cleanly shutting down.

So nothing at least there in Event Viewer and done a lot already from what i have researched to do or try.

Another factor that may affect the display, artifacts, shimmering etc., may be with the monitors firmware needing an update, however that is not usually the cause of crashes, freezes and BSODs.
It is worth checking the manufacturers support page for details.
Done that when i first bought this monitor which wasn't long ago, thanks anyway. Hey hasn't happened since passed Saturday. What am i doing different, nothing !

Seems as though for me past drivers did not solve issues, but let's see if 528.02 does.

I recently tried clean install to rule out that.

Case with me i can do burn in test and play graphic intense games for hours with no issues ?
Probably is not a hardware issue.
I feel this nvlddmkm.sys is common in most of these cases with graphic tdr other errors.

This is a different error then i receive in ways of System Service Exception I never seen this on mine or did i ever get a blue screen.
My errors are what i have seen in Event Viewer>Administrator Events from time and date issues occurred.
Do you get a dump file if so need to analyze them with programs, will give more info.
A quick update to my case, it does appear that 528.02 solved my issue, but that's just a couple of days of experience. But at least I'm able to launch SteamVR again.

You've mentioned that the problem somehow when away for a month or so, which may or may not be a power supply issue, but then it happened again mid-to-late December. I wonder if this particular reappearance was because of the December driver (527.56, release December 8th) being unstable maybe? Though if that's the case, we should have seen much more people report such issues.

Two other people posting in my thread about issues they have are not same as mine. Yours is throwing same error with NVIDIA bit more similar but you can replicate yours by applications your using to cause it. I can not so far.
Plus use of two monitors.
So far since posting mine you are first to report this nvlddmkm.sys as the error. As said by Digital Goat may not be source of problem just becomes something that triggers due to an NVIDIA issue with something else on system.

Hard for me so far answer your questions and concerns on your issue if unaware of my own NVIDIA issues thread here. Appreciate the input in similarity.

Keep my PC dusted and cleaned. Last older PSU had same error along with newer PSU and new cables.
