I was running with:
Gigabyte X570 Aorus Pro WIFI
AMD Ryzen 9 5900X
64G DDR4 3200 (XMP in BIOS)
I rebuilt the PC to:
Gigabyte X670 Aorus Elite AX
AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
48G DDR5 7000 (XMP in BIOS)
My games and C: drive are each stored on a separate M.2 Samsung 970 EVOs, which has not changed. On this mobo there are 4 M.2 slots, 2 SB and 2 CPU. I have both SSDs in the CPU slots and a ASUS TUF RTX 4070 GAMING OC in the PCI x16 slot.
Where my games used to start instantly, they take 10 - 25 seconds to start now and on boot, Win 11 takes approximately 20 seconds longer to load.
I thought upgrading to AM5 with DDR5 memory would speed things up. Did I miss something that should be turned on/off in the BIOS (latest FB1 version)?
Your PC motherboard support DDR5 5200 disable XMP and see that will help.
Support for DDR5 5200/4800/4400 MT/s memory modules
4 x DDR5 DIMM sockets supporting up to 192 GB (48 GB single DIMM capacity)
of system memory
Dual channel memory architecture
I will give that a try. I was going on the spec sheet for the mobo on the Gigabyte web site that had a spreadsheet of all the DDR5 memory supported and the memory I have is on the list. Get back to you shortly.
Turned off XMP, running @ DDR5 4800. Doesn't make any difference that I can tell. Baldur's Gate 3 takes about 10 seconds from when I double click on the desktop icon to where I get the Steam 'loading game' page where before it was almost immediate.
One thing I did notice on this 'restart' was it took forever to post and only after I actually switched off the PC and back on. Don't know if the current BIOS is whacko but I'm going to try an earlier BIOS tomorrow and see what that does. Shouldn't make any difference but I'm going to try. I'll be back tomorrow.
Well, duh!!! Checking through the BIOS again I realized that the 7800X3D had integrated graphics. Disable the integrated graphics (my first AMD chip with IG) and everything is running fast!! Thanks for your responses!!
