Installation and Upgrade Generic Product Keys to Install or Upgrade Windows 11 Editions

This tutorial will provide you with a list of RTM (retail) and KMS generic keys (default keys) for all editions of Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Generic keys (aka: "default keys") for Windows 10/11 from Microsoft will allow you to install or upgrade to a specific Windows 10/11 edition you want, but will not activate it.

Using a generic key can be helpful if you wanted to install or upgrade to a specific Windows 10/11 edition for evaluation or testing on a PC or virtual machine, or just don't have a digital license or your genuine product key currently available and you will activate later when able.

If you do have a digital license linked to your Microsoft account for the specific Windows 10/11 edition associated to the PC you sign in to with the Microsoft account, Windows will automatically be activated by the digital license if the PC is connected to the Internet.

Hello Forum 🙏
I bought a new ASUS ROG Strix GA35 with Win 10 Home preinstalled. I updated to Win 11 Home. I have original Win 10 Pro, and want to upgrade the Win 11 Home to Pro. Can I do this, and which way I have to go. Well I followed Your advice and put in the Win 11 Pro code. This did not work and come up with an error. I gave it up that and turned off my Pc. Today when I started up again, Microsoft changed it to Win 11 Enterprise and asked for a key to activate the Pc. I have no key, so Microsoft support had to go in to my Pc and changed the key to Win 11 Pro with quick assist.

@zyco1955 You should be able to upgrade with the Windows 10 Pro code provided you're no longer using that system.
What error did you get when you attempted to install Windows 11 Pro? This might help others troubleshoot.

The error was 0xc004f050, and I tried on Microsoft support to solve the problem. But they send you around and around with no help. The morning after I had Win 11 Enterprise and a claim for key to activate.

If you type the default Pro key to upgrade from Home to Pro, you must first disconnect from the internet, otherwise the key is rejected since it cannot activate and hence the error you see. After the upgrade, you must change to a valid Pro key to activate.

Hi there
I've installed loads of VM's even from "Scratch" and providing there's an existing digital license there's never been a need to enter a key - activation is automatic -- at Windows install time just hit "I don't have a product key"and continue.

I'm sure these things are just for people who want to test various versions of windows but without activation there's a whole slew of stuff you can't do anyway - so I'm really confused as to what is the purpose of these.

Yes, you can do that. You must disconnect from the internet, so Windows cannot check the key and block the change. Then enter the generic key for Windows 10/11 Home YTMG3-N6DKC-DKB77-7M9GH-8HVX7. I am not sure if this works from Settings -> System -> Activation then Change your Windows key. If it doesn't you can open Command Prompt or Powershell (Windows Terminal) as Administrator and run this command to change the Windows key:

slmgr.vbs /ipk YTMG3-N6DKC-DKB77-7M9GH-8HVX7

Once you have successfully changed the Windows key, connect to the internet to automatically activate again.

To answer the question you asked, going back from pro to home requires you to:
1. Restore a backup image you made before upgrading,
2. Clean Install Home, or
3. There are registry hacks that you can do to downgrade Pro to Home.

Downgrading back to Home from Pro after you upgrade is not officially supported by Microsoft.

No need to reinstall just to downgrade from Pro to Home. Disconnect from the internet, change the Windows key with the generic Windows 10/11 Home key (see my previous post), connect again to activate. I once had upgraded from Windows 11 Pro to Windows 11 Pro for Workstations (without activating) just to see if there is any difference in performance. I then changed the Windows key with the generic Windows 10/11 Pro key to go back to Windows 11 Pro. Windows activated again automatically once back online. Piece of cake.

You cannot downgrade from Pro to Home by changing the product key. You went from Pro for Workstations to Pro. That is entirely different then going back to Home.

Another important use for generic product keys that has not yet been mentioned is for unattended setup of Windows. Whether you are performing a fully unattended setup, or a very simple unattended setup such as one that does nothing but bypass the in 11 system requirements or create a local user account, an unattended setup file MUST contain a generic key matching the Windows edition to be installed. This is how unattended setup knows what edition to install.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
However the question remains. If you have paid for the Pro license and legitimately activated, then why go back to Home? Just not use the Pro features. Windows 10/11 Pro is a superset of Home, meaning they have all the Home features and more. If you want to use the HomeGroup feature, this is deprecated since v1803. When you could use the HomeGroup feature, you could do it from either Home or Pro, no need to downgrade.

I mean, I just want to upgrade to Windows 11 Pro for testing (of course, it's not active), and I want to ensure that I can return to the laptop's default Windows 10 Home without performing a clean install.

In that case, yes you can. Unless you use any of the Pro features you won't notice any difference. No difference in performance and gaming.

For a planned test such as that the simplest way to return to Home is to make a system image before you start. When finished testing just restore the system image and it will be back just as it was before, as if nothing had happened. Macrium Reflect Free can do that for you.

Nope. This is if you want to test the performance on your own hardware. Otherwise the simplest way to test a new Windows version is to install on a virtual machine. If you decide you don't want this version, just delete the virtual machine. If you like it upgrade your physical computer to this version.

Old school testing for new Windows version was to dual boot in a spare disk or to shrink your current Windows partition (using third party tools such as Partition Magic) and create a second partition to install new Windows there. This would keep your computer fully working while taking your time to install drivers and applications to the new version and of course familiarise yourself. Once you were sure you can fully use the new version, you would just make it default and eventually delete the old version.
