Installation and Upgrade Generic Product Keys to Install or Upgrade Windows 11 Editions

  • Staff
Product_key_banner.png

This tutorial will provide you with a list of RTM (retail) and KMS generic keys (default keys) for all editions of Windows 11.

Generic keys (aka: "default keys") for Windows 11 from Microsoft will allow you to install or upgrade to a specific Windows 11 edition you want, but will not activate it.

Using a generic key can be helpful if you wanted to install or upgrade to a specific Windows 11 edition for evaluation or testing on a PC or virtual machine, or just don't have a digital license or your genuine product key currently available and you will activate later when able.

If you do have a digital license linked to your Microsoft account for the specific Windows 11 edition associated to the PC you sign in to with the Microsoft account, Windows will automatically be activated by the digital license if the PC is connected to the Internet.

If you run Windows 10/11 Home and want to upgrade to Pro you either change your key with a valid Windows 7/8/10/11 Pro key, or you can put the generic Pro key and activate later
Yes well my laptop is activated already for 10 Pro so I am guessing it will carry over when I upgrade.:crossed

No need to guess - it definitely will. Your laptop has a digital licence for Windows 10 Pro stored on Microsoft's activation servers and linked to the hardware ID of your PC. Microsoft made no changes to digital licences for Windows 11. Your PC's digital licence is valid for Windows 10/11 and will activate Windows 10 Pro or Windows 11 Pro.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Remember to DISABLE your antivirus while upgrading from 10 to 11 to make sure it will not interrupt the upgrade process in any way. To make extra sure, I always disable all startup applications (Task Manager, More Details, Startup tab) and all non-Microsoft services (press Win+R to open a Run dialog box and run msconfig). You can enable them again after the upgrade.

I bought a laptop for company use with Windows 11 Home pre-installed from a reseller. I have a Windows 11 Enterprise license key from my company's MAPS Core Microsoft Partner software benefits. I'd like to upgrade this device from Windows 11 Home to Windows 11 Enterprise. Can I use a generic Windows 11 Pro key to upgrade from Win 11 Home to Win 11 Pro, and then apply the Win 11 Ent key to upgrade from Win 11 Pro to Win 11 Ent?
Thank you.

If upgrading from Win 11 Home to Win 11 Pro is part 1, and upgrading from Win 11 Pro to Win 11 Ent is part 2, does either part have to be performed while the machine is disconnected from the Internet?
If there is not a pre-existing digital license for Windows 11 Pro for the computer, then it will need to be disconnected from the internet when upgrading to Pro by using the generic product key. If you are connected to the internet, you will get an error that no digital license for Pro exists.

I am not sure but I think Windows 11 Pro must be activated before you can upgrade to Windows 11 Enterprise. If you have an Enterprise key you can probably use it to download the Windows 11 Enterprise ISO and do a clean installation of Windows 11 Enterprise. Not familiar with the process, so I cannot guide you. You can also disconnect from the internet and try to change the key directly to Enterprise. It could work and upgrade directly from Home to Enterprise.

I also have a Win 11 Pro key, from MAPS Core. I thought I would try using the generic Win 11 key, to upgrade from Win 11 Home to Win 11 Pro, in order to avoid using up one of our MAPS Win 11 Pro keys in the process, since I will immediately upgrade to Win 11 Ent from Win 11 Pro as soon as the W11 Pro upgrade is complete. But if the upgrade to W11 Pro using a generic key will not provide activation (after reconnecting to the Internet), and an activated W11 Pro device is required before upgrade to W11 Ent will be successful, then maybe I should use one of the W11 Pro keys from our MAPS stock instead of using a generic W11 Pro upgrade key, and sacrifice one W11 Pro license from the MAPS stock in so doing.

I would use the generic Windows 11 Pro key and then try to change again to the Enterprise key. If there is a prompt to activate the Pro version first, I would use my valid key. You may be lucky and don't have to activate the Pro version first.

So I just installed Windows 11 through Mac OS bootcamp. I must say I am very impressed with the new design. It is much faster than the OS system I am using (Mojave). I use a 2015 Macbook Pro Retina 13 inch laptop. So normally Windows 11 will not be possible to install. But I found a hack to the registry installation settings that bypass the TPM. And it worked. I used the standard ISO from Windows store. I upgraded to Pro. But my Windows is still inactive. Is there a way to activate the digital license without paying?

Use a Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate key. Or a Windows 8/8.1 Pro key. No need to buy a new Windows 10/11 Pro key.

Hi Admin,

A brand-new ASUS Zenbook laptop with an included Digital license for Windows 11 Home was what I bought. Can I upgrade to Windows 11 Professional using a retail RTM Generic Key? If I upgrade using a retail RTM Generic Key, my Windows activation would still be in effect or not? Will not experience issues with Windows updates in the future.

I recently bought a brand-new ASUS Zenbook laptop with an included Digital license for Windows 11 Home. Is it possible to upgrade to Windows 11 Pro using a retail RTM Generic Key? My Windows activation will be active or not after upgrading using an RTM Generic Key (retail). Windows updates won't cause issues in the future.

Best option is to purchase a Digital Retail Key. Bought a key for one of my laptops and had zero issues upgrading from Home to Pro, didn't even have to reinstall W11. Everything transitioned smoothly, without losing any files, etc, and with added features (obviously).

I already have Windows 11 Home activated digitally, but I'm curious if it will still be activated if I upgrade using a generic product key.

Please advice.
