How easy is it to move to Windows 11, version 25H2? As easy as a quick restart if you're on version 24H2! Today, Windows 11, version 25H2 became available to the Windows Insider community, in advance of broader availability planned for the second half of 2025. Get ready for a reset of the 36-month support lifecycle for Enterprise and Education editions and the 24-month lifecycle for Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstation editions!

As easy as restarting: The benefits of the shared servicing branch​

Over the years, you've experienced regular optimizations to the development and servicing of each version of Windows. Your installations are faster, and your experiences are more seamless. That's because combined servicing stack updates (SSUs) with latest cumulative updates (LCUs) have reduced package size by 40%.

One of the most significant improvements that make these benefits possible is the Windows shared servicing branch. This capability applies the same technology used for the monthly update process to the annual feature updates. For you, it's a familiar, fast, and reliable update experience.

This process is called "feature updates via servicing," and the updates are implemented through enablement packages (eKB). An eKB is an update package that helps update a device to the next version of Windows with a single restart that reduces downtime.

Note: Not all Windows versions share the same servicing branch. The first update that used this process was from Windows 10, version 1903 to Windows 10, version 1909. To learn more, download and read the whitepaper Windows updates and the shared servicing model.


Moving from Windows 11, version 24H2 to version 25H2​

Windows 11, version 24H2 and version 25H2 use a shared servicing branch. Here's what this means for your update experience.

New features we develop for Windows 11, version 25H2 are part of the version 24H2 branch. When the new code is complete, we include it in the monthly LCUs for Windows 11, version 24H2 in a Disabled state. Think of it as having the new feature code slowly staged on devices running version 24H2—yet another reason to stay up to date with monthly Windows updates!

The code remains disabled on the device until it receives the eKB. The eKB changes flags in the staged code from Disabled to Enabled. When you restart the device, the new features become enabled, and you're officially on Windows 11, version 25H2!

To confirm that the update took place, check your version and OS build number in Windows Settings > System > About.

Windows 11, version 24H2 and version 25H2 share the same source code, with only the additional features turned on. Therefore, there should be no impact on compatibility between the two. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't test, but you can focus your tests on the new features rather than a full complement of OS, application, or device compatibilities.

Moving from earlier versions to Windows 11, version 25H2​

Since versions earlier than Windows 11, version 24H2 do not share the same servicing branch as Windows, version 25H2, the simple update via an eKB isn't possible. The normal feature update process is the best option. Use Windows Update or Windows Autopatch.

For Windows 10 devices or for new Windows 11 devices that you're deploying, first upgrade them to Windows 11, version 24H2 to make the transition to version 25H2 as simple and quick as possible when it's available.

I've stopped manually removing the two unreclaimable packages and leave them alone as I've come to believe doing so can and sometimes does causes Windows Update errors on the following updates. Others have reported they aren't meant to be removed and can cause errors if you do so. Just going by my personal experience though I never had a WU error until I started removing the two unreclaimable packages, then the install errors began. When I stopped removing them again the WU are smooth as silk again with no errors.

Your mileage may vary. I've been removing them on all my machines, both supported and unsupported devices, since Mar 27, 2025. I haven't seen any update errors on any of them.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

I've been reading up on those component store packages and running my own trial an errors the last few months. I'm sure some won't have any issues but for others.... My old beta build machine never had issues but both my newer RP machines, one Intel and one ARM64 will have identical WU install errors if I've messed with those two packages. If I leave them alone no issues so that's enough for me. If the DISM component store clean up doesn't remove them normally then I believe they aren't meant to be removed yet and I leave them alone from now on.

Oh and the only workaround that worked to get those WU with errors was to do Repair Installs.

The thing is, for this particular package DISM has identified reclaimable packages, but a clean up can never remove them. It continually recommends a clean up.

I know, as that's what I get as well however when clean up can't or won't remove them I now interrupt it as a sign those two packages aren't meant to be removed yet and to leave them alone. I was using your command line and an ARM64 variation as well for that machine and they promptly remove them however I also encounter the symptoms I posted above. The 0x800f081f error seems to be the favorite on my machines but I encountered another as well that I can't recall the number of now.

This is the ARM64 version that someone posted and I used, easy substitute. As I said they both work great at removing the non-reclaimable packages but you may pay a price the next WU.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Yeah, I too think it's RTM as they need to get it out to the manufacturers so they can load it into their products which are soon to on retail shelves.

The reason I asked is because I used UUPDump to update and was one build ahead and wanted to know for sure it was the final build before being publicly released.

So I updated to 25H2 (again) from 26100.6584 now that the available 25H2 isos (26200.6584) is the RTM version.
I used the enablement package Windows11.0-KB5054156-x64.msu to enable 25H2.
It literally only took a minute or so.

Interestingly, the installation date is still the 24H2 installation, not the 25H2 enablement date.
If you upgrade using iso, the date is the 25H2 installation date (I tested this).

We cannot be 100% certain until officially confirmed but all indications strongly suggest 26200.6584 is the RTM iso. It is conceivable that MS find a serious bug and have to update iso. To this end, I have a full image backup of latest 24H2 26100-6584 in case I need to revert having used enablement package rather than the iso to upgrade.

Before I updated from 24H2 to 25H2 I took a extra precaution by making two backup images. Using a ISO from UUPDump I was on 26200.6718 but have gone back to 26200.6584. I'm now going to leave any future updates to W/U.
