If you have just bought a new computer, or reinstalled windows one of the first things I, and probably many others on this forum will do is use a tool called Ninite.

Ninite

Ninite is a completely free online tool that allows you to quickly download multiple programs at once. It includes the latest versions of many must-haves across windows computers.

See below an up-to-date list (just a screenshot of their UI) of programs available.

So check it out today!

I use Ninite to install Paint.net as it's a secure source for that program (I find it very hard to find a secure source for that program - even paint.net's own page is a bit iffy with ads to download other things that look like the download button).

I'm not keen on using it for lots of programs as you have to keep updating Ninite I seem to remember and that got annoying. But some people like using it and maybe it depends how many programs you need to install. I don't have that many.

What about Microsoft's own solution, Winget (Windows Package Manager)? I admit that I have not played with it at all yet. It's on my list of things to do.

I haven't heard of this until now actually.
Personally, when I do a clean install I don't install all my programs back right away. I just install the 4 basic programs (I keep them in a USB flashdrive with driver installers) that I usually use then I create a Macrium image. The rest of the programs, I install them only when I need them.
The only time I actually do a clean install is when I build a new PC or if my image backups are compromised.

The only thing I don't like about Ninite is that you can't be picky about which version of software that you get.
I am picky about versions. Generally, I try to use the older versions of most software.

I also like to scan everything I download at Virustotal... no matter what.

Otherwise... Ninite has come a long way since it first appeared. :-)

I had a quick look at the list of programs included in the screenshot and I just noticed that there's nothing there for me except for the browser and zip tool which I always have anyway. :)

I'm probably just OCD about downloading programs individually lol. From the source. Ninite is secure though. It just confuses me slightly at times.

I've used ninite for years. It's convenient, makes everything a single install, and you can just regularly run the installer to get updated versions of the software.

I never use Ninite or similar as they are pretty useless for my software needs.

When I am moving to a new device, I just want the software on new pc to be the same as on my existing pc with all program settings already optimised to my taste.

DISM Method

So, if I am installing Windows on new device, I just copy my previous installation - this is how I do it and it works every time. No 3rd party tools are needed, just a working knowledge of DISM. There are excellent tutorials by @Kari for the first two steps (I believe the tutorial of the third one by a different author was pretty good as well but not in the same league as the first two LOL)

1) create custom install.wim of existing installation

2) inject drivers of new pc into install.wim (and boot.wim for IRST drivers if new pc has nvme drive) .

3) create a standard usb drive and replace install.wim and boot.wim with customised versions.
You normally need to create a two partition usb drive as install.wim can be quite large (roughly half the current C drive storage used)

4) boot from usb drive and install. Then go to driver management and update any drivers you may have missed in step 2.

I copied my OS and programmes from an AMD pc with totally different graphics, wifi and sound drivers to an Intel PC.

I had one minor hiccup at step 1 recently as creating the custom image fell over because of Onedrive's new protected folders. I got round that by uninstalling Onedrive on old pc, creating custom image and reinstalling one drive on new pc (and old pc).

I have a batch file for each stage that does all the work. It takes me about 90 minutes to do all the steps, and no faffing around having to update software, settings etc.

It does involve a bit of a learning curve, but believe me, it is effort well spent (and really satisfying).

The method is identical for Windows 11 as well.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Image Backup Method

Another way of doing similar is to use image backups and restore to new pc and Windows 10/11 usually sorts drivers anyway (but can be a bit temperamental sometimes). You can use Redeploy feature of Macrium Reflect Home (paid) to assist if you get issues - I have never tried similar features on other imaging tools.

I'm not a fan of using a third party app to install and manage my other 3rd party programs. I'm too old fashioned and too much of a control freak, I guess. I don't use any of the free versions of the apps on that list except FF, 7zip, and Google Drive. My Revo, MWB, and Glary are premium versions.

It's the updating the installer bit I'm not keen on. I think what happens if Ninite goes down/goes bust/changes hands/gets hacked - or whatever. I like to have some control over what I'm installing. Like I said maybe a bit OCD about it!

Ninite just installs the apps. They are still in your add/remove programs list. You can do whatever you want with them. It's not a controlled by ninite only type install.

I use ninite to install

What have you found when downloading (commonly used software)?

I assume that's a rhetorical question.

Here's the Virustotal scan of the latest ImgBurn from the ImgBurn mirror...

It's amazing the things you see when you scan things.

Glad to see I'm not alone except I scan with MWB. In its day, wasn't Imgburn a great little program? I used to use it all the time but don't now that I use flash drives for everything & haven't had a need to create an iso in forever. They screwed Imgburn up when they started adding the junk to it. I managed to hang onto the last clean portable version 2.5.8.0 just in case DVDs ever come back in style. I have a couple of dvd drives stashed just in case.

This past summer I forced myself to get rid of some of the components I had hung on to over the years. I donated 7 huge boxes of dvd drives, hard drives, power supplies, assorted gpus and sound cards, every kind of adapter and addon card known to man, and hundreds of cables. I had over 100 laptop power adapters, some NIB. The boxes were so heavy it took 2 men to get them in the truck. I should have gotten rid of more. There's still boxes of junk in the garage. Oh, well. I'll wait until the TV show "HOARDERS" shows up to deal with it.

That software was clean by all virus total scans except malwarebytes heuristics.
Would you have installed it?
I've not used the virus total yet and rely on microsoft defender and / or malwarebytes.

The Ninite help displayed:
Downloads come from the publishers' sites and are checked for correct digital signatures
or matching SHA-1 hashes before Ninite uses them.

Is that sufficient to check digital signatures or matching SHA-1 or do you also need to check heuristics?

I check everything. Ya only have to be wrong... once, to ruin your day. ^^

Long time ago... there was this "installer" everyone was using.
It was called Rose, or something cute like that.

It was like a build your own installer kit. It lasted about 1.5 years. People were adding everything and the kitchen sink.
This kind of stuff just keeps happening over and over.

I have the time... there's no reason NOT to be extra careful.

And the thing about that Virustotal result wasn't the fact that MWB turned up a benign heuristic... it was the fact that
whatever is was, was from Microsoft. Wth is MS doing messing with ImgBurn?

I remember when MWB first came out. I was overly paranoid about something or other.
So I ran an MWB scan in Safe Mode (which you weren't supposed to do).
It found a backdoor trojan in.... Msconfig. LOL
I think that was towards the end of the XP days.

It's always interesting when I see stuff like that. :D

I had a quick look at the list of programs included in the screenshot and I just noticed that there's nothing there for me except for the browser and zip tool which I always have anyway. :)
It is certainately the basics

Another option that I've used personally is PatchMyPC. It does the same as Ninite, but I think it has a larger list of programs.

The only issue I've run into is installing Adobe Acrobat Reader DC - other than that one click install all the programs I use on a regular basis.

That's correct. The intention is to be a collection of the small utilities and such that we all load onto our machines on a regular basis.
