Hi All
Has anyone else noticed an abnormal amount of attempted logins to your Microsoft account?
So far today I have had 18 unsuccessful attempts & it is never from the same country
Yesterday there were 17 unsuccessful attempts & so it carries on.
I'm not sure how far it goes back but I stopped counting going back 3 weeks.

Yeah it happens, especially with alias’s

If you add two factor authentication, you should be fine.
Go to your security page in your online Microsoft Account and add 2FA if you don’t have it already.

I prefer the Microsoft Authenticator app on my phone. Works with so many websites, It’s my favourite Microsoft app.
I use the send a notification feature where possible, so that I have to match the number on my phone. Entering a code is fine also.

I've just downloaded the Microsoft Authenticator app on my phone today.
I haven't used it before so I can't comment on it, but I do like the idea of needing two different devices to log in.

On my Microsoft Account I have set it up as per the screen capture below. My account is password less and uses facial recognition (Windows Hello) by default to login with backup methods to use 2FA. Hackers have given up trying to bust into my account.

This thread got me curious so I decided to check my account and found a Sep 1st attempted login from Ukraine and a Sep 7th attempted login from Russia. Guess I'll be paying closer attention to my Microsoft account now. Course I wouldn't be surprised if the IP addresses are from a VPN.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
Just logged into mine and found 20+ attempts at login. Mainly from Brazil, but also China, Nigeria, Nicuagura. Wife's PC had more than a dozen nearly all from China....

Have changed both passwords to really strong ones and will consider 2FA also.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

Note that many attempts might by simply app or smartphone related.
Still you can disable the main alias and use a "secret" alternative email.

I noticed some suspicious activity on my bank account so one of the first thing I checked was my email accounts to make sure they haven't been hacked. So far today there has been 8 unsuccessful attempts for Malaysia, India, Brazil, Kazakhstan, Mexico. Russia, Venezuela. So it does look like they are using a vpn.

Tevo's method works or you can sign into your email account. click on your photo in the top righthand corner, then click on My Profile, in the left column click on security & under Account click on view my sign-in activity.

I wouldn't know since I never check my Microsoft account which is a hotmail.com account from 1995 since 2009 or earlier as I only use it for logging into Windows but I would imagine there are always people trying to login.
