Hasleo Backup Suite

The old Norton Ghost still works -- although only using it on an XP VM !!
Simple, fast for its day etc -- for a basic tool it did its job.

Still for those who have the WSL or Linux VM's -- simply run the DD command -- can't be easier, copies any sort of file type, copies files, disks, partitions etc.

In Windows - just boot a Winpe system and run the xcopy command e.g "xcopy c:\ f:\ /s /e /h /i /c /y" and press Enter to copy all the files and subdirectories (including any empty subdirectories, any system, or hidden files) from partition C to partition F for example.

For basic Disk copying , cloning etc there's plenty of ways to do it without needing 3rd party software especially if you have to pay for it.

You don't have to be a Windows guru but a basic knowlege of the command line never hurts. The advantage of the Linux DD over the xcopy method though is that you can re-direct the copy to a file and then you can compress it via tar, ark zip or whatever if you want to save disk space.

Of course paid software often has features like incremental / differential backups and makes it easier to keep track of backups etc. Depends on what you need of course -- but for basic cloning / copying xcopy works.

For nostalga : Norton Ghost

Seriously xcopy?
What about all the hidden partitions etc.

If you really want to be a masochist and use command line tools, use the proper one designed for the tool i.e. FFU command.

As for Ghost, we are seriously bored with a few people going on about it just to show how clever they are.

These boring f##rts should start their own thread rather than derailing a legitimate thread.

I emailed support@easyuefi.com about this issue and here is their reply. I reckon I will try Hasleo again but not until 2024 to give them time to iron-out the bugs. It is a product that is actively being developed but it currently has too many problems: -

Thanks for the reply from Hasleo -- but my system is an MBR system not UEFI. So, that is not a factor with my system.

It can be done, but additional steps are needed if you want it to boot. Just copying the partition contents isn't enough.

I often use wim files to backup partitions. Lot of advantages to that format.

Important updates on my using Hasleo ...

Installed the latest version just now, and this version does not have the filesystem corruption issues of the older version.

Also, the USB stick creation does not require my adding drivers anymore, or it does it automatically, because the USB boot works OK now.

So, I withdraw my complaint about it not working for me -- and now see it as a good alternative to MR.

OH, by the way, since 1997, I've been using "Ghost" for all my partition backups and cloning. It's simple, easy, and just never fails. And it runs from a bootable Flash Drive, CD, SD Memory Card or even a 3.5" Floppy Disk.
Taking the tape off for a minute. It's also discontinued so why are you trying to push it on us?

One final comment about Hasleo. I had a problem with a desktop PC, so as a test, I ran a restore using Hasleo. I had a MR image available in case that failed. But it worked -- without issues!

So, I can highly recommend using Hasleo as an alternative to MR for those folks who don't want to switch to the subscription model.

Hang on - this is comparing oranges and bananas.

You can still buy a paid version of Reflect with full support. Whether this is phased out in V9 remains to be seen.

You can still download the free version of Reflect but no longer supported. But many still use V7 quite happily without any issues.

V8 will probably work for many years to come with no issues but no guarantee.

Hasleo is an alternative to the free version (and rather mediocre in my opinion).

If you want a basic tool, it is ok, but it is not a patch on the paid versions of Reflect, or even on the free version of Reflect.

Anyway, the driver for switching from Reflect is about long term support - what guarantee do you have Hasleo is fully supported anyway?

Yeah, I understand all of that. My post was just to recommend a free alternative to MR. I'm not saying folks should switch from MR to Hasleo; just saying it works fine as an alternative -- if folks are looking for one.

I still use MR on nearly all my PCs, but I tested out Hasleo to see if it could work as an alternative. -- and for me, it does all that I need.

I also tried AOMEI Backupper -- but it did not back up all the partitions needed to restore Windows. So, I am not planning on using that.

I am not sure what you did wrong because AOEMI can certainly back up all the partitions NEEDED to restore windows.

You only have to backup EFI and Windows partitions on a UEFI pc.

I believe you have to choose to backup the "System" in AOMEI, for it to backup all the partitions required to restore Windows.

While Hasleo Backup Suite is currently completely free, there will eventually be two versions. A free and paid version.
I'm personally in favour of this model to give the program a better chance of continuous development.

While Hasleo Backup Suite is currently completely free, there will eventually be two versions. A free and paid version.
I'm personally in favour of this model to give the program a better chance of continuous development.

Proof?

Hi there
it depends on what you want to do. For example if you have made a Windows to Go system and you want to convert that back again to an Internal HDD version without a windows re-install (remember that Windows NEW builds won't install via UPDATE on external devices) then it's a PAID feature as it's another piece of software.

There's no problem in making a windows to go system from your current system via bog standard windows commands -- especially if you use vhdx files -- on the external device create efi partition and a data partition. Boot up a windows install disk or winpe etc and go to "repair system" to get into command mode. Copy your current vhdx file to the external drive, then attach the vdisk via diskpart sellect vdisk file=<your file>, attach vdisk, select disk xx where xx is the disk nr of the attached vdisk and assign letter= w (or anything). Assign the efi partition to letter =S

exit diskpart. Assume your windows install media is drive D: then cd D:\sources. D: and now install the boot loader as follows d:\sources bcdboot w:\windows /s S: /f UEFI and exit

job done - standard windows and clone of your current system and will stay activated since hardware not changed on your machine.

Reversing it isn't so simple as the system still thinks it's on an external disk. Hasleo will convert back to "internal" but it does this on the external disk which you then have to clone back to the internal one -- and it's a paid feature. And it has snags -- as some programs then will fail because they think they are running on a SERVER e.g Macrium for starters.

Hasleo IMO is just not ready for prime time yet if you want to rely on it for various backup / restore utilities.

Cheers
jimbo

I dont think it will be free forever. Its become as good or better than some commercial alternatives. Only a matter of time before they charge for it. They will probably add a few more features, bloat to justify charging for it in future versions. Or take away some existing features in free version to nudge users to upgrade. Like Aomei did.

... take away some existing features in free version to nudge users to upgrade ...

Such as incremental backups. Fair enough, I suppose. The existing freeware won't just stop working at that point, although MS updates may break it.

For those interested, I've made a comparison of incremental backups on the same laptops (2) from the same initial full backups using Macrium, Aomei and Hasleo. For both laptops, I'm at the 6th increment now (I expect to reach 8 increments before redoing the full backup again). With all three programmes, compression for the backup files is chosen as "medium".

With both machines, Hasleo has the smallest backup footprint size (ie. full backup + 6 increments), then Macrium, then Aomei. By how much does the footprint size increase ? Hasleo < Macrium < Aomei with each step there almost 9% in size.

I've done a full recovery with both Macrium (a number of times with this programme) and Aomei (several times) but not Hasleo as yet.

I've been using TodoBackup since 2.5.1 ....a LONG time. I have been a big fan, but recently it let me down. I recently got 2 new fanless i9 mini computers to replace my towers. I spent a lot of time setting one up with my special customization's and programs. I made backups along the way so if something on the new install did not go as expected, I could restore and start from there. But this time the restore process removed the partitions (guessing) before it got to an error, so I lost everything.

I got an Invalid Data error. I tried everything, even a fresh W11 pro install to test Todo, but still got the same results. Same error.

I can't figure the reason, but since, I tried several other free backup programs. Hasleo was the one I tried and liked. It was similar to Todo, but the restore worked. Aomei was a close 2nd, but you could not encrypt the backup without paying for the upgrade.

Another forum member posted about extra partitions when doing a restore. I noticed that too on the screen and didn't really understand what it was trying to ask for or get at, but I clicked on the C: partition and it restored the original 3 partitions as backed up (and most important, booted up). I never used a Recovery Partition or know how to use it so it doesn't matter to me IF there is an issue where it doesn't get restored.

When I have time I want to look into why Todo failed as it's given me great service and I understand it. I don't mind experimenting as long as I have a way to restore from my backup. I'm glad we have some great choices!

One feature that Hasleo lacks is option to explore the image. Sometimes you just want to copy an important file rather than restore the whole image, so that can be a deal breaker. Aomei used to have that in their free version before they took it away.
