So i got my SSD today and i was a bit shocked to find a cancer warning section on the back of the package. Something to do with perchlorate. I am guessing this substance only emits after the SSD is physically damaged or something right?
That is the standard cancer warning label required by California Proposition 65; because nearly everything causes cancer in California.

Well, I do know that anyone who has ever breathed oxygen has eventually died - or drank water....I wonder if it is because of the oxygen in water?

I have enough SSD capacity (two NVME SSD, and two SATA SSD in raid 0) to do what I need daily basis, and high capacity HDD in external enclosure for data archiving and backups that are off most of the time (SO I DON"T HAVE TO HEAR THEM). :) The reduction in noise ranks way up there for me.

This thread has nothing (mainly) to do this Windows 11 but since i am not registered to other forums i thought i could ask here.

When i bought my new PC a few years ago i went with an HDD instead of an SSD mainly because i heard that SSDs cant stand a lot of "write/delete" cycles.

I download a lot of stuff, delete and download again on my PC. So i thought the life of the SSD would be significantly lower than an HDD.

So i sacrificed speed for longevity.

Was i right?

I would like to replace the drive in the future to taste the speeds of an SSD drive but then i am afraid i will burn out the drive too soon.

Am i thinking right?

Thanks
Whoever told you that HDDs last longer than SSDs were clearly wrong. . . HDDs have rotating disks, and a mechanical hand that reads/writes data. . Those parts will wear out eventually. SSDs have no moveable parts and is the same as a Flash Drive. Run on flash memory. SSDs will last a very long time. I bought my first SSD back in 2012, and after 9 years, it's still going.

Modern SSDs are much better than original ones, You can write many terabytes before they start wearing out. You're more likely to replace it because a new shinier one has been released. But every one has sensible backup plans don't they.

I have two machines, neither of which use hard drives.

I wonder if there has ever been a single case with cause attributed to a faulty SSD?
Just for clarification, this has nothing at all to do with the state of the item (failed, or working perfectly). Rather, it simply indicates that certain chemicals or substances were used in the manufacture of the item.

If this is something that is of concern to you, consider looking for the "RoHS" logo (Restriction of Hazardous Substances).

I wonder if there has ever been a single case with cause attributed to a faulty SSD?
I've experienced this myself. The OCZ Vertex 2E was notorious for developing a fault and it was probably this that led to OCZ's demise.

SSD Tech has matured greatly. I wouldn't worry about that OP. Your other PC hardware are more likely to wear out sooner than your SSD. Most brands now have their own App monitoring software to keep an eye out on performance and endurance.

I've experienced this myself. The OCZ Vertex 2E was notorious for developing a fault and it was probably this that led to OCZ's demise.
The Agility 3s were the only OCZ drives that didn't have high return rate apparently.
OCZ was if I remember correctly not very good with finances and internal politics, went bankrupt and got absorbed by Toshiba, who eventually faded the OCZ brand out. They still have support page for OCZ though on the Toshiba site.

Using 500GB Samsung 970 Evo Plus Nvme as boot drive, 1TB Samsung 860 Evo as Game SSD, and 4TB WD Black Storage drive in my main system

Laptop 128GB Nvme boot drive, and 1TB Hitachi Storage--might go all SSD on that system if i can ever get the thing opened lol, ((one screw possibly stripped/stuck won't come out, guess trip to PC shop soon as can afford it for that one))

Backup wise 8TB Seagate External, Toshiba 2TB for extra offsite backup for some files, WD My Passport 2TB for more files

How about HDD vs jump drive vs SSD? :D Just got this very small 512 GB UASP jump drive, runs around 400 MB/s (and runs hot, good it's got aluminum casing). Hope it lasts, 5 yr limited warranty.

I'll resurrect this thread to say a few things. There is nothing wrong with the Samsung QVO SSD's. I have one and it's just as fast as any other SSD. It's potential life span may be theoretically shorter but I have never had a drive fail, SSD or HDD.

The way I have upgraded my systems from HDD's to SSD's is to install the SSD while, if possible, leaving the HDD in place. I make sure the SSD is being recognized which sometimes requires creating a basic formatted partition on it. Then I run the cloning software. I have used Samsung Magician, Crucial's software, software from Silicon Power, and even Partition Wizard and they all have worked fine. After the cloning is done and before trying to boot into Windows, I run a partition manager from a boot disc and completely wipe the HDD so that the only boot files are on the SSD. Then I boot into Windows and it has never failed to work without problems. The HDD can now be used for data storage or backups.
