i've been using madVR + potplayer for years. lately my movies have been looking washed out. after some trouble shooting i noticed if i go in to windows display settings and manually turn on HDR everything looks right. been having similar issues with games. HDR settings in game is greyed out. when i turn on HDR in windows, it becomes available in game. i never had to do this before. movies and games would just switch to HDR mode when it detected HDR content. can't figure out why windows is not automatically switching to HDR any more. any suggestions?

Just to make sure that I understand, are you saying that you need to do this every time boot? In other words, that turning on HDR is not sticking or staying on across reboots?

Or was this a one time thing that you had to turn HDR back on?

The setting should remain on once you set it. If it was a one time issue, could it be that a new display driver was installed either manually or through Windows update?

    The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

not the issue. it remains off day to day. it's not switching on when HDR content is playing.

Is this only in Windows 11 or did you see this in W10 as well?
Would there be an option that you missed somehow in Settings?
I would presume that you updated both PotPlayer which, it usually
does automatically (I use it too) and MadVR?
Just looking for possibilities here.

OK, then, have a look see if there is anything you can use in the Youtube search.

I just turned on HDR which I don't like for reasons and in GeForce Experience, just asked
to turn on HDR in a game that I have installed. I guess mine does it automatically.

If HDR and Auto Hdr are both off..it will never come on. HDR is on for me, thus when anything that has hdr support it will play in hdr, If i turn HDR off, it doesnt matter if its hdr or not hdr it wont play in hdr.image_2023-08-13_112025786.png

that's not true. auto HDR does not need to be on for any reason. it's fake SDR > HDR image processing for non HDR content.

the main "use HDR" button is all that matters. it does not need to be on 24/7. when it's on for SDR content it makes everything look worse. it's only suppose to be on when HDR meta data is being fed from the content to the display device. it's suppose to "switch" HDR mode on and off by itself when HDR content is detected.

I have HDR set to off.

When I open an HDR movie file in MPC (Media Player Classic), HDR is automatically enabled while the movie plays. When MPC is turned off, the display reverts to SDR. (I don't game, so I have no experience with HDR games.)

"autoHDR" is only available to me if HDR is enabled. I see that it's an option to rescale SDR content to resemble HDR.
