help, slow computer

I recently bought a Lenovo laptop, Yoga 7, 32GB (within 6mos ago)...but even simple tasks like right-click context menu in windows explorer will take 10 or more secs to come up (as if something is being indexed or logged?), and bulk copying pics from my phone as another example can take 5-6hrs, although doing so in smaller lots will be much faster (but feels rather stupid to have to do "manually")
can someone recommend how to diagnose if my laptop is optimised or something, it's really concerning, killing me the lack of productivity despite I though specs @ 32GB should be pretty fast

Try running these two commands, one at a time in Terminal (Admin)...

sfc /scannow

Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase

How long does it take Windows to start up? I suspect your Lenovo has too much bloatware.

McAfee or Norton Anti-Virus maybe. Lots of redundant software and documentation.

If that is the case, do a clean install using MCT. Just use Windows Defender and Firewall.

thank you, this was one concern to be sure
however, I have scanned (Bitdefender antivirus free as well as Malwarebytes), and all clear
also, both run active protection on my laptop

thanks you...I consider my laptop/windows boots quite fast, less than 2mins
I don't believe I have bloatware, as I did purge whatever was pre-installed when I first bought the laptop- certainly there is no McAfee or Norton (I run Bitdefender antivirus free and Malwarebytes)
I have probably installed a fair number of programs, but I had been careful to manage what launches upon start-up, which is only security and core system apps

thank you. I had run dism scanhealth/checkhealth as well as sfc /scannow...all passed cleanly, nothing flagged (I did once run dism restore health some months ago as there was corruption, but it hasn't re-occurred since and now passes checkhealth

  • If new device drivers or system services have been added recently, try removing or updating them.
  • Look in Device Manager to see if any devices are marked with an exclamation point (!), which indicates a problem. Review the events log displayed in the properties for any faulting device driver. Try to update the related driver.
  • Check the System Log in Event Viewer for additional error messages that might help pinpoint the device or driver that is causing the error. Look for critical errors in the system log that occurred in the same time window slows down.
  • If you recently added hardware to the system, try removing or replacing it. Or check with the manufacturer to see if any patches are available.
  • Install Windows updates.
  • If you are overclocking (pushing the components beyond their design) you should revert to default at least until the crashing is solved. If you don't know what it is you probably are not overclocking.
  • Use SpeedFan to monitor temperatures in computers, overheating can cause BSOD.
  • Use Memtest86+ disc to check system memory's (RAM's) for errors.
  • Use CrystalDiskInfo to check SMART health report of the hard disk drive (HDD).


Open the Command Prompt with administrative privileges and execute bellow commands one at a time.

Mine is a Lenovo laptop and it boots up in 20 sec, they do not come with much that could be defined as bloatware. The main items were unwanted like MS Office trial and McAfee AV trial.
Even after program installs it still remains at that 20 sec mark.

In the Startup folder as viewed in the Task Manager 3 items enabled(Lenovo hotkeys, Realtek audio, Security tray icon), and 13 disabled.

Most were disabled by Program settings, some by not installing startup modules and/or auto update modules.

That is probably where the problem is despite you saying you have managed that.
Much depends on what the applications are, how they are installed and settings.

Not sure what you mean by that "purging" a potential cause of problems.

Indexing can be a problem depending on how it is configured. There is a large page on that in Windows Settings (27,000 indexed on mine).

Right click menus in File Explorer should be far less than 1 sec.

Performance Options > Visual Effects Tab > Custom > Any fade or slide item unticked, makes it look a bit snappier.

I have no system modding apps.
