This is weird. Voice typing captures my voice at accurately whether the mic level is set to 60 or 100. But when I go into the recording tab, I don't see the level at all, as if I am way out of range from the microphone.

Use the Sound Recorder in your All Programs list. As in Voice typing agc(automatic gain control) applies, so changing the mic manually has no effect.
You can check that with the Sound Recorder graphical display.

I just tried the HP Audio Control and it is behaving the same way that Windows is: when I speak at various volumes, I get no level at all. Maybe I need to contact HP Support? How do I do that anyway? This computer has a one year warranty (so far) and I've only had it 10 weeks.

Actually, I'm inclined to just ignore it since the microphones appear to be working as witnessed by the success with voice typing; it's only the level display that seems to be misbehaving which is insignificant if the software can hear me regardless.

I would ignore it as it is functionally working, just a minor display link problem.
Maybe fixed later by a system update.

On mine there is a voice level indication in Windows settings, but not in the Realtek Audio Console. Both the slider levels change in sync. Applies to both internal Mics and external headset mic.
