How Do I Get 24H2?

It's a phased rollout (again) it could be weeks (months?) before it gets round to you (and me). I have 3 supported devices and none of them have seen 24H2 in Windows Update yet.

If you'd prefer to get 24H2 through Windows Update rather than using an ISO then you can. There is a way to tell Windows Update to find and install 24H2, which I have used on one of my machines (the other two can wait and see). See my posts #36 and #46 here:

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

You can empty the Windows.old folder if wanted, but if you do, you will not be able to go back to 23H2 if needed.

I'd say wait 10 days when the time expires to be able to go back before emptying the Windows.old folder. This way you still have the option to go back up to 10 days if needed.

Yes, it is safe to delete it if you have a backup image you can use to do a system restore from in case you run into any problems. If you don't, I would wait a while to make sure you don't run into any problems.

My computer does not receive the update notification yet. The fastest way is to download Windows 11 ISO 24H2 from Microsoft and run the setup.exe to start in-place upgrade.

Hi guys. I am back with a couple questions that I hope you can help with:

1. I installed W11 24H2 on 10/11, and so far have had no issues/problems. Is it safe/ok to delete the Windows.old directory? It has been about 9 days since install of 24H2.

2. In Windows Security, under the Device Security section, and in Core isolation, I noticed that "Local Security Authority protection" is toggled off. Should I turn that on? I primarily use my laptop for gaming. When I was about to toggle it on a few days ago, a message appeared stating computer would need a restart to apply that setting.

Thoughts and help appreciated :)

It should automatically get deleted after 10 days anyway, unless you have extended the time allowed to roll back. Personally I clean up Windows.old immediately, but then I do have a Macrium Reflect system image I could restore, if required.

LSA is not new for 24H2, it was in 23H2 as well. It adds an extra layer of protection against maliciously crafted drivers or plugins. I have it turned on, but then I'm not a gamer. I don't know if it slows down your play.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
