Hello,

In preparation for a hardware upgrade, I opened up a web browser and checked the Devices section of my Microsoft account to see if my license is still saved there. Surprise, it's gone. My regular Windows account is local and the license was previously linked using a secondary online account. I suppose they decided to prune my saved device information from my Microsoft account without warning, even though I use that account daily, just not to log into Windows. Seems really douchey, but I digress.

I've logged into Windows once again via the online account and the situation is as follows:
• I can see my device listed under the Windows Settings app - Accounts - Linked devices.
• Settings app - System - Activation shows "Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account."
• In spite of this, pointing a web browser to Sign in to your account still shows "We don’t see any devices" and only offers a way to manually add Microsoft hardware.

I'm losing my marbles refreshing that page like a maniac. I've read somewhere that it can take up to 24 hours for that information to sync, but I don't know what to think. Is there anything else I can do to ensure the license is synced properly? I've waited more than 2 weeks for all my PC components to arrive. Now I can't even perform the upgrade because I ran into this roadblock and I have to head back into work before it's resolved. Thank you in advance for any assistance.

sometimes the digital registration for systems to a MS accounts just doesn't work.
my wifes system Win 11 25H2 has never been registered on her device section
but it has never stopped activation when doing a clean install.

i would go ahead with the upgrade as the system will auto registry
but it would be wise to take a note of your product key.

best of luck Steve ..

How do I link my digital license to my Microsoft account

A lot of people have been reporting that linking activation to an MSAccount no longer works for non-MS computers.
Linking it just eases re-activation after major hardware changes such as the motherboard.
Re-activation still works automatically after clean installs as long as major hardware has not been changed. Otherwise you'd end up having to phone them using the number that gets shown in the event of re-activation failure.

And save yourself a lot of effort & hassle by first backing up your drivers.

Best of luck,

There's no product key. This was an update (from Windows 10, if I recall) back when the free upgrade was offered. The command line and PowerShell methods yield nothing, confirming this. I don't trust the "BackupProductKeyDefault" from the registry to be useful. Even if it's not a placeholder, I might just get told the key is already in use.

I am definitely going to change major hardware (the motherboard, for one), so I need to make sure Microsoft is aware of this accursed digital license. Otherwise I'll be stranded on a deactivated copy of Windows with no way to activate it. I've gone through this upgrade/reactivation rigmarole once before, but the license was properly saved in the account back then.

Thank you for the replies. For now, I'll read a few related threads I noticed when time allows and mull things over some more.

Have you tried using the 'ShowKeyPlus' app.

The short story is that it was exactly as I feared: Windows refused to activate after a hardware change. In the end, I solved this by buying a product key from a dubious seller for less than $4.

The full story is that this was a horrendous time-wasting ordeal at moment in my life when I already have too many issues too handle.
1. Windows says it's activated with a digital license linked to my account.
2. Upgrade computer.
3. Windows won't activate from the current device. List of linked devices in the activation troubleshooter shows my old computer, seemingly with a Windows 10 license instead of 11.
4. Internet advice suggests activating Windows 10 after a hardware change, after which Windows 11 should activate automatically.
5. Multiple attempts with both Rufus and WinToUSB fail to create a USB stick that actually loads Windows 10, even with Secure Boot disabled.
6. Out of desperation, decide to install Windows 10 on my old SSD which at this point has been cloned and should serve no purpose anymore.
7. Windows 10 won't install. Find and apply advice to clear the disk of all partition information and retry.
8. Nearly have a heart attack after booting into Windows 10 shows no trace of Windows 11 remaining.
9. Regain some composure after it turns out all the data on the new SSD is safe, but left with no assigned drive letter. It turns out Windows 10 installed on the correct drive, but replaced the bootloader on the new drive, locking me out of Windows 11.
10. Windows 10 refuses to activate with the exact same error message. Resist the urge to bash my head against the nearest wall. The best advice I can locate on my phone for restoring the Windows 11 bootloader comes in the form of a YouTube video. It's 20 minutes long and I should've been getting ready for work several minutes ago.
11. Momentarily panic some more after the the video instructs to clear the EFI partition but then rebuilding it seemingly gets stuck. It simply takes a minute on my end, while it was instantaneous in the video. Great success: back to square one with an unactivated copy of Windows 11. I've never been happier to see this garbage operating system start up.
12. Buy product key from shady store. It gets e-mailed to me several hours later. It comes with a lengthy tutorial which explains that the key will fail to activate multiple times, of which there was no mention on the store page.
13. The phone number Windows points me to for activation doesn't work. Try my luck with the web-based thing instead. It fails to activate, as mentioned in the tutorial.
14. Jump through some more hoops in the command line prompt window. Reboot. Windows is activated with a digital license linked to my account. Raise an eyebrow in apprehension. Reboot again to see if it sticks. It seems so.
My Microsoft account in a browser continues to show no linked devices, while Windows shows both my computer and the old one, which is just loose parts strewn about my office. I take a moment to reminisce about Windows 7, sigh and call it a day.

Thank you all for the replies. Take care.
