Solved How do I open Windows Terminal?

Whenever I try to open Windows Terminal, powershell opens instead. I've tried changing every setting I can find and it still opens powershell. Click on start, type terminal, click on the terminal app that appears, and powershell opens.

Open settings of Terminal you can configure it Default Profile from there.

Windows Terminal will open with "Windows PowerShell" selected by default.

You can select a different profile (ex: Command Prompt) to open instead, or change the default profile to always open to by default.

No, does not give the option of opening Terminal, it only gives the option of replacing Powershell with Command Prompt. I want to open the old Windows Terminal that used to open when I clicked on Terminal from the start menu.

All of the options in the tutorial open Powershell (or Command Prompt) now. There is no longer a "Windows Terminal". My Start Menu options with Win+X do not show Windows Terminal - it only shows Terminal and when I click on it, it opens Powershell (or Command Prompt). Windows version 22621.2715 and also the latest Canary build.

It's normal for it to show as "Terminal" instead of "Windows Terminal" now in Win+X.

Check the tutorial below to make sure you have Windows Terminal selected as the default terminal app.

Note that Windows terminal is a host not a console.
It has to open a console not only itself

How about this question.... running Windows version 22621.2715 or later, is there anyone that can actually get Windows Terminal to open? I can only get Powershell or Command line, nothing will open Windows Terminal.

Ah, it does not open at all...

Start -> Settings -> Apps -> Installed apps -> find windows terminal and click on 3 dots to open menu and click advanced options.
Here you can either repair it or reset it.

Tried that no change. Maybe I was just seeing something previously that was never actually there. I could have sworn there was an actual terminal window. I used it to SSH into my NAS and Raspberry Pi, but I notice SSH works in PowerShell and Command Prompt, so maybe that was what I was seeing all along.

Bottom pic is when I click "Open Settings" in the top pic...

It seems to be the same in Settings > Terminal (Admin) as well...

That is how mine is set. When I do Win+R and run WT (Windows Terminal), Powershell opens. When I click on start, type "Terminal" and click on the Terminal App on the start menu, Powershell opens.

It would help if you post a screenshot of what it's showing. I believe in the past if one had Windows Terminal Preview installed, it will break the right click start menu options which requires fixing manually as I had that problem.

Were you thinking about this? This is known as Windows Console Host that was there before but in late 2021 or 2022, Win11 22H2 has changed it to Windows Terminal by default.
