Solved How significant is the OS Build number?

I had a very unsatisfactory experience attempting to install KB5066835 today and when I read the dedicated thread about that update, I noticed some things I don't understand which may or may not have contributed to the bad experience.

The update in question is called KB5066835 (26100.6899). I recognize that 26100.6899 is a build number but I don't understand its significance in the title of the update. Is it assuming that I am running exactly that build number before I start the update? The reason I ask is that *my* build number is 26100.6725, a lower number than the one in the update title. Does that mean I need to do some other update before I should attempt KB5066835? Or will Microsoft take care of that for me while I'm installing KB5066835?

The install error I got was 0x800f0920. I didn't see that error number in any of the other reports of failures in apply KB5066835. Is it possible that this error means my OS Build was too low and that caused my error? If so, what is the exact update or updates that I need to apply to get ready for a successful install of KB5066835?

It's telling you what the build number will be after you install the update.

No. .6725 is followed by .6899
Windows Updates are "cumulative". Even if you missed one or a few updates, the latest update should still work.




There's a whole list of things to try to fix the 0x800f0920 error.
It's much simpler, just to do an In-Place Upgrade, then try the Windows Update again.



You won't lose any files or programs, when doing the In-Place Upgrade.
It fixes just about all Windows issues.

Nope, it’s telling you the build you will end up with “After” the update is applied.

No, the error (errors) is becoming common. There are other posts.

It’s a good practice to read all posts in an update thread. There are bound to be people who have also had problems with applying an update. Some update threads can be long, still it is beneficial.

To start with, you could try resetting Windows Update

Let's look at that number in a little more detail. I'll use as an example build 26100.6725. The 26100 portion indicates what version the base Windows is. For example, based upon this I know that you are running Windows 11 24H2. But within the life of Windows 11 24H2, there are many updates. So, the 6725 portion lets you know where in that timeline you are. 6725 was the Sep 29 Preview update and 6899 is what you get after the Oct 14 patch Tuesday update is installed.

Thank you all for clarifying the meaning of the OS Build number and what it means in the update title. I suppose I'll try the in-place update tomorrow then.

I assume but may wrong, that the developers take a code set and call that a build when it is compiled. Change some code, and they need to increment the build number. Repeat the process until they get a clean compile and a successful built. If the same code additions apply to 2H24 and 2H25, then the build number is the same for both editions.\

Yes? No? Sort of?

24H2 and 25H2 are considered the same Windows release internally to MS. They get the exact same Monthly Updates in lockstep. The CU updates the UBR to .6725 or .6899 (or later). When you have an Enablement Package (like 25H2 EP), it makes Windows print the human readable version of Windows as 26200 instead of 26100.

Removing the EP from 25H2 reverts the displayed version from 26200 back to 26100, but the UBR (patch level) version of .6899 stays the same.

22H2 & 23H2 are the same Windows for patching
21H2 is its own patch schedule
W10 19041 - 19045 (22H2) are the same Windows for patching

If you want to be super pedantic about it, Microsoft uses the four-part version scheme of major.minor.build.revision. So for the October 20, 2025 update of 25H2, the version number is 10.0.26200.6899.


But almost no real-world human cares about that.
