How to permanently disable automatic updates on Windows 11

Hello, is there anyway to permanently disable update? I had tried several method but it can only pause the update.

It's as simple as creating a blocking firewall rule that blocks wuauserv service going out.

But keep in mind that your computer will suscumb to malware sooner or later by doing so.

What does not updating got anything to do with malware? I never update at all in the past and all is well.

If system is not patched then the attack surface widens and it's easier to exploit vulnerabilities.

If you practice safe computing and you're confident in what you do then that's fine,
but most casual users do not practice safe computing.

Also just because everything is fine (or it seems so) does not mean you're safe, there is the so called FUD malware,
against which antivirus can do absolutely nothing.

Thanks i am aware of it. So how do you disable it completely?

It seem like MS come out with some workaround which makes my suggestion no longer work,
but I recall it worked in Windows 10.

That is not a good practice especially with a reasonably new OS that even after 2 years is still in the development stage. Not updating leaves any security hole open. As @Marcus Vinicus stated the only approved native way is through group policy which is in Pro. Home users have to resort to changing the registry or using third party software.

Interesting.

I'm a retired IT Manager and have seen too many users who security wise when using a computer need saving from themselves on a regular basis. So I don't think disabling WU is a good idea in that scenario.

Agree, that's what I said to the OP right away but he\she doesn't care.

But it seems the OP is going to disable updates whether we help him or not,
if he doesn't find help here he'll find it elsewhere.

All the guys who say "I have disabled updates and never had an issue" are like guys who say "I never wear a seatbelt and never had an issue".

People should learn the concept of the Swiss Cheese Model. Any layer of protection will have holes in it but if you line up multiple layers and all the holes align, you are at risk.

So in pc protection, what layers do you have

1) Antivirus - holes are lack of updates
2) Attacks via exploiting holes in security. Holes are lack of updates
3) Malware by clickbait (main hole being lack of common sense).
4) Firewall - Turning off protections is another hole.

So turning off updates increases risk and is dumb.

The single best example of dumb was the wannacry attack a couple of years or so back.

This mostly affected Windows 7 users who had not upgraded to Windows 10.

It also affected Windows 10 users who dumbly blocked updates.

It DID NOT affect Windows 10 Users who kept up to date.

Forget all the garbage from people who say it is ok to block updates. REMEMBER THIS - it is not their pc they put at risk.

Do you think they would ever reimburse you for your financial losses LOL.

It seems like i had a different version of local group policy window update.. anybody has the same one as mine have you try to disable it?

Very simple.
Just download and install "StopUpdates10setup.exe"
Run it, and you can "Hard Block" all MS Updates, and if you ever want to get updates in the future, just run the program again and tell it to UN-Block Updates.

I can't remember exactly where I got it, but, I run it after every install of 10 or 11, just as soon as the installer has downloaded the correct Video Driver for the system.
