How to remove McAfee popup ?

I have Windows 11 on Dell Inspiron 16 Plus 7640.

The laptop is only about 1 week old.

At each Windows startup, I get a popup from McAfee with the following message:

- Your virus protection has ended! Reactivate McAfee

My first thought was to back up the registry, and delete the McAfee entry. Before deleting anything, I found about 7 McAfee entries - just for one single popup. So I knew I was up against real professional scum who would lock up my laptop with a clear conscience.

I use BitDefender with a VPN, so I have no need for possibly conflicting anti-virus.

I would be grateful for any advice.

I recommend using Revo uninstaller to remove those entries. It's free and it's safe.

Thanks for your response.

I launched Revo, but it can't find the virus. There's no legitimate entry point - usually an EXE file or maybe COM. So it doesn't appear in the Revo list of installed files.

IMO, the McAfee virus is simply a network of registry entries that are somehow spliced into the OS at startup. (This is all guesswork, because I'm barely able to remember my own name these days.)

Your computer is not locked up.
If by scum you mean McAfee, then sure, they’re scum.
It’s not a “McAfee virus”

You doubtless have the pre-installed "trial" McAfee, and they of course are cajoling you into buying a subscription. I'd use the McAfee removal tool first.

Yep. That's generally their style. Too bad to learn that not even Revo can deal with it these days. Reminds me of that old annoying AVG browser high jack gimmick they had going back in the day.

I get what you mean by that, but as not everyone would, I’d hate those who don’t to think that we have a virus that isn’t real, floating about.

I agree, it's not a virus , just preinstalled trial software on a new computer who's trial has ended.
Another reason I stopped buying store bought pc's a long time ago, they come pre-loaded with a bunch of useless junk.

If I remember correctly , I had a Dell Inspirion laptop years ago, and it came with a restore disk , if yours is the same every time you do a operating system re-install you're gonna get that popup and you'll have to uninstall the software.

I remember Decrapifier, it was a great tool for stuff like pre-loaded Windows. It made it pretty painless to remove much the junk that manufacturers pack onto the machine. It didn't remove everything, but it saved time in killing off a bunch of stuff in one stroke.
