I don't use Teams but MS says:
  1. 1. Use the search bar:
Enter keywords, names, or file names related to the chat you're looking for in the search bar at the top of the Teams window.

  2. 2. Refine your search:
You can use filters like "from" or "in" to narrow down your search results.

    • 3. Check hidden chats:
If you've hidden a chat, you can still find it by searching for the person's name and then selecting "Show hidden chat history".
    • 4. Consider retention policies:
If you're unable to find a chat, it's possible your organization has implemented retention policies that might affect how long chats are stored.

Again from MS:
  1. After a clean installation of Windows, your Microsoft Teams chats may appear missing because a clean install removes all previous programs and associated data, including the local cache for Teams. However, your chat history is likely still stored in the cloud and should reappear once the application resyncs.
How to Get Your Chats Back
    1. Check your internet connection: Ensure you have a stable internet connection for Teams to sync your data from the cloud.
    2. Log out and restart Teams: Sign out of Teams completely (right-click the taskbar icon and select Quit), and then restart your computer.
    3. Use the web version of Teams: Check if your chats are visible in the web version of Teams to determine if the issue is limited to the desktop app.
If your chats are not still in the web version of Teams, you might consult MS support

AI response (you can ask AI most anything.)
To backup Microsoft Teams chat, you can utilize several methods, including manual copy-pasting, using the Compliance Center, or employing third-party solutions. Manual methods are feasible for small amounts of data, while third-party tools offer automated backups and granular recovery for larger datasets.

Here's a breakdown of the methods:
1. Manual Copy and Paste:
  • Open the desired chat in Microsoft Teams.
  • Scroll to load all the messages you want to save.
  • Copy the text (Ctrl+C on Windows, Cmd+C on Mac).
  • Paste the copied text into a document (e.g., Word or Notepad).
  • Save the document.
2. Microsoft 365 Compliance Center:
  • Access the Microsoft 365 compliance center (compliance.microsoft.com).
  • Sign in with administrator credentials.
  • Navigate to "Content Search".
  • Create a new search query to find the specific Teams chats.
  • Export the search results to a ZIP file.
3. Third-Party Backup Solutions:
4. Retention Policies (Compliance Center):
  • Use retention policies within the Compliance Center to archive Teams messages.
  • This method can be used to archive messages for a specific duration.
  • Note that this does not offer easy recovery of deleted data.
5. Sharing to Outlook:
  • You can share individual Teams messages to Outlook as emails.
  • This can be useful for saving specific conversations or for forwarding to others.
Important Considerations:
  • API Limitations:
Some third-party tools may have limitations in backing up certain elements, such as code snippets.

  • File Backups:
Files shared in Teams chats are typically backed up through OneDrive or SharePoint.

  • User Permissions:
Some methods, like using the Compliance Center, require specific administrative permissions.

  • Frequency and Granularity:
When choosing a backup method, consider how frequently you need backups and how granular you need the recovery to be.
