How to stop Edge install

Hi

I have Chrome installed on this PC and do not want to change.

How do I stop Edge from installing when I run Windows update.

In the registry...

In the Taskbar Search Box type: regedit. Open this up and navigate to the following location. You can copy and paste this into the Registry Editor address bar. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft

Right-click on the ‘Microsoft’ folder and select ‘New’, then ‘Key’. Name the key ‘EdgeUpdate’ and then right-click on it. Select ‘New’ then ‘DWORD (32-bit) Value’ and call this ‘DoNotUpdateToEdgeWithChromium’.

Once created, double-click to open the key and change its value to ‘1’. Click ‘OK’ and it’s safe to close the Registry Editor. Microsoft Edge now should not automatically return on your PC.

Mine is set like this, and I haven't seen an EDGE update... ever.
This registry tweak, just disables EDGE updates. It does not disable or remove EDGE.


IF you plan to use EDGE more than occasionally... then just delete the DoNotUpdateToEdgeWithChromium value on the right side in the registry.

    Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
Personally, I just ignore Edge, just like I ignore Cortana. I am also a Chrome user and don't care for Edge or Cortana. I have all the defaults set up so that Chrome is my default browser choice. I have a 900 GB disk drive with 700 GB free, so I don't care about the space. Once in a while, some MS utility will open Edge, but I close it quickly and check the "task manager".

IMO, one should always have an alternate browser to troubleshoot issues with your preferred browser if necessary. Also certain features of Windows depend on Edge to work. You do not have to use it.

I used Edge for a while but now i'm back on Firefox. I like Chrome, but Firefox uses a bit more memory resources. And with Edge, I can activate CSS and do all that.

My EDGE, and Windows 10/11 work fine... EDGE just doesn't update.... ever.
EDGE is on 117.x.xxxx at present.
My EDGE is still on version 106.x.xxxx (Sept. 2022), which was when I applied this registry tweak.

Good question. They may be uninstalling or disabling it, then immediately checking Windows update to see if it comes back?

I removed Edge a couple of weeks ago. I did the same thing. It didn't come back. I then waited to see if patch Tuesday would bring it back, and I'm happy to say that it did not.
