Inplace Upgrade From Windows 10 to 11 Questions

Sorry to ask the following questions but I need to be reasonably confident of my assumptions.

I have read on the Internet and asked Co-pilot several questions regarding an in place upgrade from Windows 10 to 11 . However I don’t think I always get up to date info so I am asking here.

I meet all the requirements for Windows 11, TPM is “on” but secure boot is installed but “off / disabled” at my request. I also currently use a local account and understand this will remain in place when I get upgraded to Windows 11, is this correct ?

Although secure boot was enabled on original installation of Windows 10 I disabled it soon afterwards for my own reasons.

I get the flashing banner saying 24H2 is available for me so can I go ahead ?

I do not want any other Microsoft services eg: syncing, one drive etc so where will the Bit locker key be shown so that I can make a note of it assuming all goes well !

I recommend you turn off bitlocker before upgrading in case you get issues. You can turn it back on afterwards (and save bitlocker passwords).

Also make an image backup first (preferably without bitlocker).

Accounts, apps etc will be unchanged but as above having an external image backup is a good plan. Obviously, backup critical data (as a minimum as well.

As cereberus suggested, disable bitlocker, create a drive image backup or at least your data backup and let WU upgrade your computer. As you have a local account, after the upgrade it will remain as local.
You can disable onedrive.

You have suggested I disable bitlocker before upgrading. I have never had it enabled on any of my machines.
I also have no idea what the bitlocker key inumber is either on any of my machines.
I am also impatient and if the upgrade instal fails I will do a clean instal. I have no important info on any of my machines apart from programs I have installed which I will make a note of, and then put up with the Microsoft Account.

You don't have to have the MS account. There are still ways to just use a local account with a clean install. See Step 15 in this tutorial.

If you have Device Encryption rather than the full Bitlocker then the drive is encrypted but left permanently open. There is no bitlocker key, that only gets created if you turn on full bitlocker protection.

Thank you for your replys. In the end I created an ISO put it on a stick using a "tool" and choosing the option for a local account only. Windows 11 seems to work fine for me, although it is a new instal as I had wiped my drive.
As my computer automatically activated and I have all the Microsoft requirements to have Windows 11 (apart from MS Account) do you think I will be offerred the next version later on and will it instal normally or would I have to start all over again ?

If your PC is a supported device for Windows 11 then you will see the upgrade to the next version offered in Windows Update. 25H2 is expected to be released in October.

but the big question is will it force me to use a microsoft account if 25h2 is offerred. I know I will have some time before I have to reach a decision.
I have debloated Windows 11 as much as I can and it is at least as good as windows 10 and has a fresh look to it.
With the official way of installing of Windows 11 can I assume that a ms account is mandatory and no way of logging in solely with a local account ?

Not unless they changed something. When it is updated to 25H2 it should still have a local account.

All my computers have local accounts. I don't plan to change those to Microsoft account.

I have two computers with Windows 11 Pro 24H2:

• Desktop: started with Windows 10 Pro but upgraded to Windows 11 Pro
• Laptop: came with Windows 11 Home but upgraded to Windows 11 Pro

I have another computer with Windows 10 Pro 22H2:

• Desktop: started with Windows 7 Ultimate but upgraded to Windows 10 Pro. Will be upgrading it to Windows 11 Pro in the next couple months

BTW, I do have a Microsoft account but not for logging into my computers. I use for the following:

• Required by Microsoft Office 2019 and 2021 for cloud saves
• Required by Microsoft Store for making purchases
• Required by Phone Link for pairing my phone to my computers
• Required by Sticky Notes to sync it among my computers
