Solved Install Windows on a laptop problem

Then why is disk MBR as Windows 11 support UEFI GPT partition to be installed on?
Probably someone bypassed compatibility check before installing Windows 11 for the first time. If you do that you can install Windows 11 on unsupported computers with Legacy BIOS, without TPM, without Secure Boot etc. Just like installing Windows 10, as long as the CPU supports SSE4.2

But like I said, I see the USB stick and I see 370GB unallocated.
When I choose the unallocated, I get the exact message in your pic above. Exact message.

"The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, the operating system can only be installed to GPT disks. Setup does not support configuration of or installation to disks connected through a USB or IEEE 1394 port."

I'm puzzled by the USB/IEEE 1394 warning, particularly since you're selecting what should be the internal SSD. Although this warning normally concerns USB-connected storage, there have been reports of it appearing for internal SSDs as well.

The laptop is advertised as having a 512 GB SSD, which should appear as approximately 476 GB in Windows Setup. You mentioned selecting the 370 GB of unallocated space. Is that figure correct?

Probably someone bypassed compatibility check before installing Windows 11 for the first time.

As far as I know, most modern laptops support only native UEFI boot mode, not Legacy BIOS/CSM boot mode. On laptops without Legacy BIOS/CSM support, booting from the Windows installation USB flash drive is only possible in UEFI mode. When installing Windows on a completely blank disk, Windows Setup automatically initializes it as GPT and creates the necessary partitions.

Far as i know you cannot bypass UEFI (GPT) installation of Windows 11 i think Windows 10 was installed on laptop.

If your computer supports Legacy BIOS/CSM boot mode and you deliberately want to install Windows 11 in that mode:

When creating the Windows 11 USB flash drive with Rufus, select:

Partition scheme: MBR

Enable the "Remove requirement for 4GB+ RAM, Secure Boot and TPM 2.0" option in Rufus.

Then select the Legacy BIOS/CSM boot entry for the USB flash drive in your computer's one-time boot menu.

Windows Setup uses the boot mode of the installation media to determine the required partition style for the Windows system disk: GPT for UEFI boot mode or MBR for Legacy BIOS/CSM boot mode.

Good Morning @Ghot :-)
I Think i will second @spapakons idea about create a user account for her to use.. But try to keep OEM install if she ever call Asus for support. They kind of like when the computers still is as they intended. *lol* :-)
Just make sure the User account still can install auto-updates for OS and Browser.

Extreme measures:
When at University at the 90's we had some computers running UNIX but with a shortcut to load Windows as well. When we used this shortcut, it loaded a virtual machine running Windows 95. It restored a backup from the network and loaded Windows 95. When we shutdown or restart Windows 95 none of our data or applications installed on the virtual machine were retained. On startup the whole virtual disk was wiped and restored from the network backup. So it was virtually impossible to do any damage to the Windows virtual machine. You could do something similar to her laptop. Install some Linux distribution as host OS and let it automatically load a Windows 11 virtual machine. The virtual machine would be wiped on startup and restored from some disk image every time. You could have configured all her data to be saved in OneDrive or another physical partition, so when the virtual disk is wiped she wouldn't lose them. No matter how foolishly she would use Windows 11, she wouldn't be able to damage it!

@Celery

The 370GB seems about right. 4-5 months ago I made approx. 100GB partition on her drive for storage.

Also, I was thinking about Rufus with MBR partition scheme. I need to have a look at the BIOS first ofc.

This is what Windows Sandbox does now, abet some configuration is available, and only from outside the container.
Get Sandbox to auto start full screen if it's a Pro license only, not a home one.
Or just lock the system down with policies and user permissions.

From AI:

Code:
Since you're using AOMEI Backupper and restoring the same backup image to the same physical disk, we can troubleshoot this without immediately converting or erasing the disk.

Because the same image restored successfully several times before the error appeared, we should first check whether AOMEI's recovery environment can see the disk correctly and whether the disk's partition layout has changed.

Step 1 — Check the disk in AOMEI's recovery environment
Boot from your AOMEI recovery USB and stop when you reach the error. Do not start another restore yet.

Look for Tools, Utilities, or an option to open a command prompt. The exact menu depends on your AOMEI recovery-media version.

If you can open Command Prompt, enter these commands one at a time:

text
diskpart
list disk
3. Look at the Gpt column in the results.

An asterisk (*) under Gpt means the disk uses GPT.

No asterisk means the disk uses MBR.

4. Identify the target disk by its capacity. Do not select or clean any disk.

For example:

text
Disk ### Status Size
Disk 0 Online 931 GB
If Disk 0 is your target disk and the Gpt column is blank, it is MBR.

Then enter:

text
list volume
exit
This displays the detected volumes and their drive letters. Recovery environments sometimes assign different drive letters from normal Windows.

To inspect the target disk's partitions, you can also run:

text
diskpart
select disk 0
detail disk
list partition
exit
Replace 0 with the actual disk number if necessary. These commands inspect the disk; they do not intentionally modify it. Do not enter clean, convert, format, or initialize.

Record the disk number, capacity, partition sizes, and partition types. If the disk shows 0 B, the wrong capacity, or no expected partitions, stop and investigate before restoring.

Step 2 — Verify the AOMEI backup image
On a working Windows computer, or from the installed AOMEI application if available:

AOMEI Backupper Screenshots
1. Open AOMEI Backupper

Find the Tools section and look for Check Image. The exact location and wording vary by version.

AOMEI Backupper - 無料・ダウンロード
2. Select the backup image

Browse to the existing backup file, often with an .adi extension.

Aomei backup - Page 2 - Windows 10 Forums
3. Run the verification

Let the check finish. If AOMEI reports an integrity error, preserve the original image and avoid overwriting it.

If Check Image is unavailable in your recovery environment, use the installed application on a working computer. Do not assume that the image is corrupt just because the restore failed.

Step 3 — Identify exactly when the MBR error occurs
This distinction is particularly important:

Before restoration begins: likely a destination-disk, partition-style, or restore-mode compatibility issue.

During restoration: possible partition-layout conflict, disk write failure, or image/restoration problem.

After restoration, when Windows boots: more likely a boot-mode mismatch or boot configuration problem.

Step 4 — Check whether the disk or restoration environment changed
If the image verifies successfully and the disk is detected at its expected capacity, check whether anything changed since the last successful restore:

Did you update AOMEI Backupper or recreate its bootable USB?

Did you change a BIOS/UEFI setting?

Did you resize, delete, or create partitions?

Did the computer shut down unexpectedly during a previous restoration?

Does the same disk appear as MBR in the installed Windows environment and in AOMEI's recovery environment?

A disk that repeatedly fails at the same point may have a persistent compatibility or disk problem. If the disk reports I/O errors or disappears intermittently, check its health before further restoration attempts.

Tell me these two things next
1. When do you get the MBR error?

Before the restore starts, when selecting the disk

While the restore is running

After restoration, when trying to boot Windows

At another stage / not sure
2. What does diskpart show under the GPT column?

Blank — no asterisk

An asterisk (*)

The 370GB seems about right. 4-5 months ago I made approx. 100GB partition on her drive for storage.

Okay, I thought you were trying to install Windows on a completely empty disk. You should not delete or format the 100 GB partition if it contains important data.

You should also check the BIOS settings to see whether the VMD controller is enabled. If VMD is enabled, I wouldn't change that setting for now. If Windows Setup isn't accessing the internal SSD correctly, you may need to load the appropriate Intel RST/VMD driver from the laptop manufacturer's support website.

The following error message indicates that Windows Setup identifies the selected disk as MBR-partitioned while running in UEFI mode:

"The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, the operating system can only be installed to GPT disks."

The following message contains two separate warnings:

- Windows Setup identifies the selected disk as MBR-partitioned.
- Windows Setup also identifies the selected disk as connected through USB or IEEE 1394.

"The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, the operating system can only be installed to GPT disks.

Setup does not support configuration of or installation to disks connected through a USB or IEEE 1394 port."

These warnings do not necessarily mean that the laptop's internal SSD is MBR-partitioned. We first need to establish which disk Windows Setup is actually identifying.

Ok, here's the pics you asked for. I disabled Fast Boot in the BIOS. That was the only change I made.

Now... I'm going to download the Win 11 ISO direct, and RUFUS so I can make MBR installer.
I saw NO option in the BIOS for CSM or TPM
It's a very limited BIOS even on Advanced settings.

I'm setting RUFUS like this...

Now it wants the RST driver... I have the version number in one of the pics above. Looking for it now.

Thanks for the photos. They confirm what I originally suspected: Windows Setup isn't detecting the internal SSD, most likely because the Intel RST/VMD driver is missing.

Your screenshots show that Intel VMD is enabled and that the BIOS correctly detects the internal Samsung NVMe SSD (476.93 GB), listed under "Non-RAID Physical Disks."

However, the Windows Setup screenshot shows only Disk 0, which is your installation USB flash drive:

- Disk 0 Partition 1: ESD-USB - 32.0 GB
- Disk 0 Unallocated Space - 206.5 GB

Both entries belong to the USB flash drive. Your internal SSD isn't listed at all. That's why you're receiving the MBR/GPT and USB/IEEE 1394 warnings.

You don't need to create an MBR installer with Rufus. Edit: The instructions were intended for FreeBooter, not you.

**I recommend leaving VMD enabled and loading the appropriate Intel RST/VMD driver during Windows Setup.**

ASUS provides step-by-step instructions, including screenshots, here:

Download the appropriate Intel RST/VMD driver from the ASUS support website for your laptop model, extract it to a USB flash drive, and select "Load Driver" during Windows Setup.

Once the driver is loaded, Windows Setup should detect your internal Samsung SSD.

You're right. It's a 256GB USB stick.
But... with VMD disabled, I could see all the partitions. Tried to get a pic, but the installer was faster than I was.

Also... if this works out... instead of AOMEI, I'm going to put Macrium v8.0 free on the laptop.
AOMEI is either really weird, or I'm not using it properly.

When I use AOMEI to restore a backup, it only let's me "choose" the C: drive, but it restores the C: drive and the System partition.
The problem is the after each restore there's another System partition.

Anyway, I'm now on the desktop... Win 11 installed, now I have a ton of work to do.

...and it reboots every time, and all seems well.

Here's Disk Management. Need to get Minitool installed to see what's what.

However, the Windows Setup screenshot shows only Disk 0, which is your installation USB flash drive:

Well spotted.

Yes, the name ESD-USB is the name the MCT always uses for the Fat32 partition it creates. At 3.5GB used space that looks to be a typical MCT-created intall partition.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

No need to Mount images.
She clicks on anything she sees on the internet. So all I'll really need is a restore every now and then.
She shouldn't even have a computer.

If you really want to use Reflect Free v8, then one workaround is to find an older WinRE.wim and use that as a 'custom WIM' for the Reflect rescue media builder. Then you can still mount images when you boot to resuue media, either from USB or the boot menu.

Need to find a decent backup, restore and cloning software - post #45

Other workarounds are in the following posts....
