Installing 24H2 on system-disk of less than 64GB - is it possible?

If I remember correctly you can assign another folder as the default place for applications instead of C:\Program Files (x86) and C:\Program Files. I don't remember how, I never did that since I usually choose custom installation and change path manually. For Office and other applications that won't let you choose where to install, changing the default program location makes sense. This way you indirectly force them on the SD card, rather than the internal storage.

As for taking up space, I got an inexpensive Win11 Notebook for the included Microsoft 365, in Program Files the Microsoft Office folder is only 3.40GB and the Microsoft Office 15 is only 4.72GB, most of the program seems to be online [maybe the forerunner of SaaS?]. There's other folders for things like Edge.

That link is about 9 years old. I think it all changed when MS 365 became store apps.

At least for me, that is not an option. I use Microsoft 365 Family Edition and I have it licensed through 2028. Yes, there is an offline installer, and that is how I install it, but that offline installer has no option to change the location to which it is installed.

It's not a huge deal. I really am not going to do much with a system that has only 32GB of storage. It was simply that part of my standard installation configuration is to install it on every machine.

Maybe if you can change the location that Windows apps are installed to an SD card, but doing a quick Google test I didn't find anything.

I had already created a junction point pointing it to the SD card and it will indeed install to the SD card by doing that, but it won't run in that scenario.

Another solution is to install a cut down version of Windows. One example is offered at WindowsXlite.com. They have 24H2 v4.3 which takes up much less space than a standard installation.

Of course some features are missing! How else could the installation be smaller? You can always add these feature back as and when you need them. You can add any programs and you can re-enable Windows updates if you wish.

have you considered an SD card or USB pen drive set up with a ram disk Windows will/should use that space to provide the necessary space required for an upgrade/install .. just a thought.

Yeah I have just purchased a laptop with 128GB emmc drive (never seen a 128GB emmc drive before) for an elderly friend. That leaves a fair amount of storage even with MS365.

She really only needs it for light surfing (shopping) and emails bit needs a larger screen as her vision is getting poor.

The keys are quite large as well.

I have also included her on my MS365 contract, so she gets MS365 + 1TB.

I have created a Macrium Reflect Free backup of the base setup and moved it to onedrive.

So if anything falls over, I can recover quickly enough within a day or so (she lives at a distance).

The device was a bargain at £90 (allegedly half price).

Some criticise these low end devices and 32GB (1st gen emmc really) were a struggle to update.

However, the larger 64GB and even 128GB will be a lot better for updated but I will still need to manage it by moving stuff to onedrive or deleting junk.

I gave away my older 32GB emmc travel laptop to my step grand daughter for school use and an MS 365 licence.

I do not do much travel these days but at £90 I might buy one myself (no big deal if it breaks or gets lost)stolen. I remove all stored password credentials - typing them in each time), and setup a strong password.

Sure but her ISP blocks remote logins - they can remove it.

I prefer to leave it blocked so she cannot get scammed into letting hackers take control of her device. She will only use this laptop intermittently and it is not critical to support her immediately.

I have too tried to upgrade my HP Stream 7 tablet with 32GB eMMC using a USB flash drive, but Setup insist on having at least 10GB free space on Windows drive which is virtually impossible.

No, Ready Boost is when you use a USB flash drive as a secondary RAM for systems with low RAM. Normally Windows use a swap file in the hard disk when RAM is limited, which for a mechanical disk is about 100 times slower than RAM. Ready Boost allows the use of a USB 2.0 flash drive which is faster than old mechanical disk. But an SSD is much faster than a USB 2.0 flash drive, so it's not worth it.
