Is amdkmpfd.sys needed with an Nvidia GPU?

I've seen this driver get installed a while back, but never noticed what it was for.
A search says it's something to do with an AMD Filter Driver.

Is this driver needed when using an Nvidia GPU?

Can't say if it's needed but since the computer listed in your My Computer is AMD-based and if having no issues I'd leave it installed. I had something similar on an ASUS computer from 2016 with an AMD CPU and a GeForce video card [case plastic parts started breaking in '22].

Fair enough. I know that when I did a clean install of Windows this driver wasn't installed at the time. I disabled driver updates using Group policy, but then re-enabled it sometime later, the driver installed then. I've disabled driver updates again.

My comp is very similar to yours... and I don't have that driver anywhere on the Windows partition (C:\ drive)

I don't have MSI Afterburner installed, if it happens to be a part of that.



Amdkmpfd.sys file information​


The process known as AMD PCI Root Bus Lower Filter belongs to software AMD Driver by Advanced Micro Devices (www.amd.com).


Description: Amdkmpfd.sys is not essential for the Windows OS and causes relatively few problems. Amdkmpfd.sys is located in a not identifiable folder.

I just checked there... I don't have it.
I don't see it in: C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore either.


If you have a fresh backup... just delete it if you want... and see if anything breaks.

For future reference... there's a LOT of un-needed drivers in a Windows install.
If you plan to go through all of them and remove the superfluous ones... buy a walker now.
You'll need it before you're done. :-)

This amdkmdpf.sys is I understand part of the AMD Radeon GPU drivers. I have a RX 7900 XTX and this file is in my system in two locations.
1. c:\windows\system32\drivers
2. c:\windows\system32\driverstore\filerepository

In the latter this file is listed in an AMD inf. In the Device Manager it is a PCI Bus device aka "AMD PCI Root Bus Lower Filter"

According to the post in the forum linked below (for Radeon driver specialists) the poster "The Creator" states (in the second post on the page) that the driver is redundant (includes on systems with Radeon GPUs and drivers like mine).

Leaving the driver on your hard drive as a precaution would be the logical thing to do IMO.

then why does Windows install the same driver even an old version? This driver is useless on Win11. Because Windows just sees that "hey you don't have this one, let's me fix that for you" and it doesn't care that you don't need it because GPU driver already have own personal iteration of these...

I've never used an AMD GPU nor installed the Adrenalin drivers, this installed through Windows Update after a clean install. My motherboard is AMD.

Many computers can run with default Microsoft drivers (without installing chipset drivers).

Installing chipset drivers usually improves performance.

The actual name of amdkmdpfs.sys is a 'AMD Kernel Miniport Filter Driver' or 'Amd root bus lower filter'. It could well be included in AMD motherboard chipset drivers according to unconfirmed information I saw online.

If there are no issues as stated previously the safe thing to do is to just leave on your hard drive.
