Is running sfc after windows update meaningful or not?

Have you done your repair install?

I found the following
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
followed up with sfc /scannow

I tried the above and both say

but it did not fix my issue (File History setting, see a parallel thread)

FWIW, I am still shying away from a repair install, feels like doing a heart-and-lung transplant to treat a paper cut and the next windows update can give you the next paper cut as mentioned

I did the repair install and it didn't help. I cannot run the DISM command that NavyLCDR posted or the DISM command that you posted. sfc /scannow works.

Of course, you always run cmd with administrative privileges.

sfc/scannow
chkdsk /C: /f /r /x (C is the drive letter where your Windows operating system is installed )
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
DISM.exe /online /cleanup-image /AnalyzeComponentStore (This command says there are "xy" reclaimable packages and component store cleanup is recommended)
DISM.exe /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup (This command gets to "xy"% and then reads "The operation completed successfully".)

Note, after each step, check whether the problem is resolved or not

Also, as has already been said:

(After major updates I run:
dism /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase )

@gagisu you don't need to run /ScanHealth, /CheckHealth and /RestoreHealth consecutively. You can just run /RestoreHealth.

These are not maintenance tools: they're diagnostics and repair tools. I'm not sure why everyone treats them as if they're routine tools you should be running on a regular basis?

we didn't say they needed to "routinely" use.. we just said that to solve certain problems ,"these routines" help. Sorry if we didn't understand each other in the messages.

A well maintained computer usually has only minor problems that do not even get flagged by the OS (with a notification or the like) but there is no such thing as a perfect computer.

The tools that many people routinely use to maintain their computers well are generally tools to identify AND correct those minor problems (i.e. diagnostic AND corrective, preventatively applied before bigger problems happen that do get flagged by the OS) I think the tool most often mentioned in this sense and context is sfc /scannow

And you can of course go beyond the point of diminishing returns, too. Aiming for 100% perfection can do more harm than good to your computer and to your own sanity (like humans overdosing on vitamins) see the title of this thread.

But maybe 99% perfection in a technical sense is 100% perfect in a practical sense

I routinely run sfc /scannow after a CU. Usually it reports nothing to do, occasionally it finds and fixes problems. If so these were invariably of the type 'permissions set twice' and would have had no effect of the system.

Dism's /startcomponentcleanup option is a maintenance function. I will only run that if Disk Clean up did not run its Windows Update cleanup. If it did then there's no point, they both run the same TiWorker process to do the actual cleanup.

I was just trying to help the member who reported the problem. The tools (routines) I listed are "actually" useful commands and in "mostly" help.

P.S. I would be particularly pleased if the member who started the topic with his problem would come forward and comment on whether and how he solved his problem...

I just dangle my computer out a 2nd story window, by it's power cord.
I tell it: "Act right or yer done for".

After that it operates perfectly.

If you're refering to my post, the answer is no. DISM will not run. I even tried mounting the ISO I used to update with and pointing DISM to the drive. That's the only problem I have so I'm not going to worry about it.

Did a test tonight.

Ran SFC in Beta and all was fine.

Did updates and ran it again.

Yep - SFC fixed some issues.

Good enough proof to me to deem it worthwhile to run it after each update.

That is not unusual, not just in Beta but also in RTM for both 10 and 11. In my experience they are more likely to be seen after installing a 'C/D Release' Preview CU, much less likely after a Patch Tuesday 'B Release'. If you check the CBS.log you should find that these were all trivial permissions errors, as I said above.
