Is sleep ever going to work correctly?

Absolute ditto!!!! In the early days. I just got sick and tired of searching for that elusive driver that kept waking the device and/or that constant re-boot because the (insert hardware driver name) wouldn't wake the device. Neither was worth the freakin' time and effort!!!

Consequently, sleep (all forms/modes), and hibernation, are consigned to the permanently OFF mode

Unlike you desktop guys, I've used only laptops for the past 25 years. During the working day I like the security of simply closing the laptop lid when I walk away. When I get back and open the lid, I like the instant face recognition and instantly being exactly where I was when I left. I never have a problem with Modern Standby. But then my lifestyle is to be completely mobile. I like having my office be wherever I happen to open my backpack.

Actually of all the software and settings that Microsoft has a meglomaniacal penchant to reset back to its evil default during some updates, user selected power options settings seems to have been immune. Kudos to MS for that.

Yours is a whole different set of circumstances.
Me, I live alone, nobody comes here, I haven't seen another human being for 20 years!!!
I don't worry about security and all those other complexities.

I do.... but not on the system drive... i keep sensitive stuff in encrypted containers... I dont think anyone would be excited of my browsers bookmarks

and as for talking about security.. using biometrics (face, fingerprint) to unlock/decrypt is really-really bad if you have sensitive data.
as if someone really wants it.. they just knock you out as they dont need your cooperation to get to it.. just your face/fingerprint.

For me it's about lot's more than security. I need mobility. I can't be tied down to a single chair in a single room in a single house.

I think someone is watching to many heist movies of thieves cutting off fingers etc to get access

. Experts and law enforcement indicate that this is extremely rare. If a criminal wants access, physically threatening the victim to hand over the passcode, unlock the phone or PC, or transfer funds is much more common and efficient.

sadly its not movies.. It was not long ago they invaded a family's home with hand guns to get to the husbands bitcoins.. he was lucky as he was home alone and the family was out so they couldn't use the family against him.. he was beaten and never gave up his code.. one of the children came home and saw it from the outside and called the police.. and they got caught trying to get away.
So yes it is rare, but it's still a real problem.. so not only in the movies.

I don't worry about somebody knocking me unconscious. That's what my Smith & Wesson is for.

Seriously, my security concerns are identity theft and taking over my financial accounts.

Jokes aside.. I always recommend the right level for security for the person unique use case/needs.
For military secrets.. then its offline storage in a bunker with armed soldiers outside.

For your bookmarks.. then its not really needed, unless you have auto login with cookies.

Anyhow.. for me it is rare I have sleep issues. The one consistent, over the years has been, if it reboots from S3 sleep, reinstall the driver.
I'll get this maybe every couple of driver updates. System won't resume from sleep. Reinstall the driver and do nothing else, and it will work fine for months.
I like the convenience of everything being ready to go in about 5 seconds. My LG C4 takes longer.

FWIW, the two times I've gone round-n-round with sleep, it's always been 3rd party video drivers. I wouldn't be so quick to blame Microsoft for the problems with sleep.
