Moving a file requires the deletion of the file in the folder that contained it. Anything that blocks that could prevent the move.

May have to compare some settings to maybe find out why the old laptop works as expected. Done for the night; have another go tomorrow; hopefully will solve the vpn issue on laptop also. Something about mobile hotspot which is turned off. More fun.

Okay. If "move" is the issue (and not copy), try disabling the recycle bin on the originating drive (right click on the trash can and click on "don't move files to the recycle bin...."). After you've moved the files, you can turn recycling back on if you like. Just keep in mind that it will be very difficult to restore any deleted files during the time the recycle bin is disabled.

did get my laptop up and running with my vpn; just an install error of some kind. So, if WE can't solve this then I am going to look at working these files on the laptop then sending them over to the desktop via a bridging usb 3 cable. Never had any luck with networking even with help from here which was appreciated.
And no; I haven't given up!!!!

Last note for tonight. Was able to download one of my BIG files onto the laptop, then did manage to send the file quite quickly to the pc.

This was a test; can also copy, move and delete these files just fine on laptop. just in case!!

I have tried that with various results; just did it again; works fine with COPY but not with the MOVE command. File resided in a folder off of the desktop and was sending to a folder on my D drive (SSD). Either SSD doesn't matter which drive.
When I get my vpn working on the laptop I will try the complete process.

If you're saying that the file to be moved wasn't even on the computer you were using, that can be caused by lack of permission to delete the file on the remote computer.

Make a backup first. For this kind of issue I would go the System - Recovery - Fix problems using Windows Update (Reinstall now) route. It will take a little bit of time but seems to work well in my experience.

For moving large files I use FastCopy. Go to its settings and enable Shell Extensions. Before running the copy command select Elevate top right. Improves speed. Just posting for info in case you might want to try after the Windows repair.

I have done the system-recovery process; no change; weird sitting at my desk with an old win 11 laptop that does the job while right next to it is my much newer pc with the problem. I have contained all issues on the 2T SSD so I can't blame the other 3 drives, at least I don't think I can.

Happy New Year to all that have tried to help me with this issue. Not going to be resolved anytime soon me thinks. So, I got the laptop hooked to the pc with a bridging cable. I am using the laptop to do what I want with the big files, then I copy or move them over to the correct folder on the pc. Works quickly and saves me dealing with the issue at hand for now. I will continue to look into it. I could always reinstall win 11 from scratch but not on my list of things to do right now. Not sure if I mentioned it but the same issue applies when I move a large number of music files from the ssd to anywhere. Strange situation. Again; thanks for the help.
