Win Update KB4023057 Update Health Tools - Windows Update Service components

  • Staff

 Microsoft Support:

Summary

Microsoft Update Health Tools is offered to devices through Windows Update as update KB4023057. This update is applicable for both Windows consumer and commercial devices, with a slightly different purpose and functionality.
  • On Windows consumer devices, this update helps remediate smooth functioning of Windows Update.
  • For commercial devices, this update is recommended for Windows Update for Business (WUfB) Deployment Service for managing Feature and Quality Updates.
The Microsoft Update Health Tools is required for Expediting security updates through Microsoft Intune and Microsoft Graph.

This update should automatically install if your device is connected to Windows Updates services and allows automatic updates. If your device isn't regularly receiving quality updates, because of low disk space or have low activity, this may prevent the device from installing the Update Health Tools. If you currently don't have the client installed, you can then try triggering a normal Windows Update scan. Or, you can manually download and install Update Health Tools from the Microsoft Download Center.

To verify that Update Health Tools has successfully installed, do the following:
  • Look for the installation files at this location (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Update Health Tools).

    Update Health Tolls files
  • Commercial customers can check whether the Microsoft Update Health service is running on the device.

    Update Health Tools service
You might have to allow the following endpoints if they are blocked in the device's firewall settings, or an upstream firewall:
  • *.blob.core.windows.net port 443
  • deploymentscheduler.microsoft.com port 443
  • Devicelistenerprod.microsoft.com port 443
If your tenant is in the EU region:
  • devicelistenerprod.eudb.microsoft.com port 443
Important: If your device is out of support, it is no longer receiving security updates from Microsoft and may become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you update to the latest version of Windows. Each version of Windows is supported for 18 months. After support ends, you must update to a newer version of Windows to continue receiving Windows updates and security fixes. To learn more about the Windows lifecycle, see Windows 10 lifecycle fact sheet and the Windows 11 lifecycle fact sheet.

How to get this update

Release ChannelAvailableNext Step
Windows Update and Microsoft UpdateYesNone. This update will be downloaded and installed automatically from Windows Update.

It is also offered directly to Windows Update Client for some devices that have not installed the most recent updates.

If your devices are not receiving automatic updates, please check the device settings.
Microsoft Update CenterYesImportant The standalone updates are available for manual download from the Download Unified Health Tools from Official Microsoft Download Center.
Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)NoSee the other options.

Note: This update is currently not needed on devices that are administered through Windows Server Update Services.

NOTE All supported builds of Windows 10, versions 20H2, 21H1, 21H2, and Windows 11, version 21H2, and 22H2 require this update.

@Brink

When I download the one from the Microsoft Update Center in the OP, and try to install, it says a later version is already installed.

I still have the older version from December 2022 as posted earlier in the thread, wonder if uninstalling it which can be done from Settings, Apps, Installed Apps would force it to install the newer version.

I was able to uninstall it from Settings -> Apps -> Installed Apps but Windows Update did not reinstall it, not sure if it's because of the March 31, 2023 entry still in the Windows Update history and I tried the manual download of running the msi of expedited packages and it didn't reinstall either.

Just wait. It'll popup in Windows Update, sooner or later.

MS will get there eventually. They always do.
One month is like 2 seconds for MS.

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
It's been exactly 1 month since I uninstalled KB4023057 aka Microsoft Health Tools. It still haven't popped up in Windows Update yet...

MS will get there eventually. They always do.
One month is like 2 seconds for MS.
I got this via Windows Update on 5 June.
If you already have it installed by another method, it won't appear in W.U.

See post #29, I never got the April 2023 version but only the December 2022 version so I did a uninstall and it still did not reinstall yet.

Did a Windows in-place repair install of Windows 11 Beta Insiders x64 Pro Build 22631.2050 on July 21, 2023 as did not see the KB4023057 come in in Live Update after uninstalling it Installed Apps back in May 2023. Windows Update still showed the last KB4023057 entry from March 31, 2023 when I did the last in-place upgrade which was the December 2022 version 5.0.69.0. I was trying to figure out why the repair install didn't install it again, it was because the manual download I did before from KB4023057: Update Health Tools—Windows Update Service components - Microsoft Support actually got installed as v5.0.69.0 so I uninstalled it and downloaded again and installed and it was still v5.0.69.0. Apparently, the page lists the files as dated April 3, 2023 which would be v5.0.70.0 but the file Microsoft provided for download is dated February 2023 which was two months before what the page mentions and only contains v5.0.69.0 as the files in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Update Health Tools folder are all dated December 2022 and v5.0.69.0. Microsoft never updated the downloaded file to the newest April 3, 2023 v5.0.70.0 files and it appears that for Windows Update, it seems to only provide the v5.0.70.0 version to some people and not others. I have reported the issue on Feedback Hub as:

This time, I uninstalled it from Installed Apps and will check periodically if it gets installed and what version it installs.

Again, nothing. Nothing via Windows Update, nothing if I try to install it via the Windows file.
It actually does install using the Windows File except the downloaded file is dated February 17, 2023 which contains v5.0.69.0 from December 2022 which can be verified in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Update Health Tools folder and when you look for Microsoft Update Health Tools in
Control Panel > Programs and Features

You can easily see if it installs or not by uninstalling using Control Panel > Programs and Features and then install using the downloaded file and check Control Panel > Programs and Features

So until they fix the download link, we will never see v5.0.70.0 which consists of the April 3, 2023 dated files. Windows Update seems to only show v5.0.70.0 for some people and v5.0.69.0 for others. Microsoft Updated Catalog when searching for KB4023057 seems to only show versions even older than v5.0.69.0 with the latest from May 2021.

This update has been trying and failing to install every day since 8/2/2023. Meanwhile, I see that v5.70.0.0 is in my list of installed apps.
So I'm not sure why my Windows Update History is filling up with these failures. (Other Windows updates have installed OK during this time.)

So I'm not sure why my Windows Update History is filling up with these failures. (Other Windows updates have installed OK during this time.)
After many failed solutions, I finally found one that worked.
Deleted everything in the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder, rebooted. Did not need to go into Safe Mode as some sites suggested. The update then downloaded and installed in a few seconds.
