UPDATE 9/9: KB5005642 Windows 11 Insider Preview Beta Build 22000.184 - Sept. 9

UPDATE 7:10PM PDT: Recently, Windows Insiders in both the Dev and Beta Channels began reporting that Start and Taskbar were unresponsive and Settings and other areas of the OS wouldn’t load. We quickly discovered an issue with a server-side deployment that went out to Insiders and canceled that deployment. If you were impacted by this issue, you can use the following steps to get back into a working state on your PC.
  • Step 1: Use CTRL-ALT-DEL and choose to open Task Manager.
  • Step 2: Choose “More details” at the bottom of Task Manager to expand Task Manager.
  • Step 3: Go to “File” and choose “Run new task”.
  • Step 4: Type “cmd” in the “Open” field.
  • Step 5: Paste the following: reg delete HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\IrisService /f && shutdown -r -t 0
  • Step 6: Hit enter, and then your PC should reboot. After rebooting, everything should be back to normal.

Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22000.176 to the Beta Channel!

We are also making Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22000.176 available to commercial PCs in the Release Preview Channel. Please see this blog post for all the details.

Changes and Improvements

  • People want to get closer to the things they love, faster. This is why commonly used experiences like Search, Task View, Widgets and Chat are pinned to the Taskbar in Windows 11. To manage which of these icons are pinned to the Taskbar in one place, simply right-click on the Taskbar and select “Taskbar settings” to open the Taskbar Settings page and choose which system icon to hide. If you hid any of these system icons previously and want to unhide them – you can do this via the Taskbar Settings page.
Simply right-click on the Taskbar and choose “Taskbar settings” to choose which system icons appear.
Simply right-click on the Taskbar and choose “Taskbar settings” to choose which system icons appear.

Fixes

[General]
  • We fixed an issue with paired Bluetooth LE devices that was causing an increase in Bluetooth reliability issues and bugchecks after resume from hibernate or when Bluetooth was turned off.
  • We mitigated an issue that was resulting some users hitting in an unexpected error when trying to take pictures with certain USB cameras.
  • When setting up Windows Hello in OOBE, we’ve added a new link to learn more about Windows Hello.
[Chat from Microsoft Teams]
  • Arabic and Hebrew languages will now allow changing Teams Settings.
  • We fixed the issue where if you were making an outgoing call, there was no ring tone, but the user interface would show that the call is getting connected.
[Microsoft Store]

The following issues were fixed in the most recent Store updates:
  • We fixed the issue where the install button might not be functional in limited scenarios.
  • We also fixed an issue where rating and reviews were not available for some apps.

Known issues

[General]
  • We’re investigating reports from Insiders in the Beta Channel where after upgrading to Windows 11, they are not seeing the new Taskbar and the Start menu doesn’t work. To workaround this if you are impacted, please try going to Windows Update > Update history, uninstalling the latest cumulative update for Windows, and the reinstall it by checking for updates.
  • We’re working on a fix for an issue that is causing some Surface Pro X devices to bug check with a WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR.
[Start]
  • In some cases, you might be unable to enter text when using Search from Start or the Taskbar. If you experience the issue, press WIN + R on the keyboard to launch the Run dialog box, then close it.
  • System and Windows Terminal is missing when right-clicking on the Start button (WIN + X).
[Taskbar]
  • The Taskbar will sometimes flicker when switching input methods.
[Search]
  • After clicking the Search icon on the Taskbar, the Search panel may not open. If this occurs, restart the “Windows Explorer” process, and open the search panel again.
  • Search panel might appear as black and not display any content below the search box.
[Widgets]
  • The widgets board may appear empty. To work around the issue, you can sign out and then sign back in again.
  • Widgets may be displayed in the wrong size on external monitors. If you encounter this, you can launch the widgets via touch or WIN + W shortcut on your actual PC display first and then launch on your secondary monitors.
[Microsoft Store]
  • We continue to work to improve search relevance in the Store.
[Windows Sandbox]
  • Within Windows Sandbox, the language input switcher does not launch after clicking the switcher icon on the Taskbar. As a workaround, users can switch their input language via any of the following hardware keyboard shortcuts: Alt + Shift, Ctrl + Shift, or Win + Space (the third option is available only if Sandbox is full-screened).
  • Within Windows Sandbox, the IME context menu does not launch after clicking the IME icon in the Taskbar. As workarounds, users can access the functionalities of the IME context menu with either of following methods:
    • Accessing the IME settings via Settings > Time & language > Language & region > <each IME language> (e.g. Japanese) three dots > Language options > <each IME> (e.g. Microsoft IME) three dots > Keyboard options.
      • Optionally, you may also enable the IME toolbar, an alternative UI to quickly invoke specific IME functions. Continuing from above, navigate to Keyboard options > Appearance > Use IME toolbar.
    • Using the unique set of hardware keyboard shortcuts associated with each IME-supported language. (See: Japanese IME Shortcuts, Traditional Chinese IME Shortcuts).
[Localization]
  • There is an issue where some Insiders may be some missing translations from their user experience for a small subset of languages running the latest Insider Preview builds. To confirm if you have been impacted, please visit this Answers forum post and follow the steps for remediation.

Microsoft Store

We are rolling out an update for Store (version 22108.1401.11.0) to Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel that includes the following improvements:
  • A complete visual overhaul of the Library UI, with simpler navigation and better performance to boot.

This build just won’t boot for me. Tried 3 times, same thing.
Installs OK from WU, restarts initially OK, gets to 100%, I see the new swirly graphic, then my drive light goes solid on (no flickering) and then, nothing. Just hangs.
A reboot takes me back to previous build.
First time I’ve had any issue with updates. Any ideas?

There had been some concern that Microsoft might not take kindly to people trying to get away with machine specs which they didn't approve of, that seems to be coming true.

I agree,.,, the last thing they want to do is have non compliant device data in with the rest of the data. It would make it harder to understand what is really going on with the OS

I doubt it was directed at you.

With luck it's an issue on the MS side of this. I'll assume that your device is compliant since you got the update or at least semi compliant so that wouldn't be an issue.

My observation was not directed at anyone in particular, but because several of the contributers to this thread mentioned that they were being deleted from insider program levels. I was lucky in that my pc, with help from other forum members, managed to get past the W11 requirements.

Oh come one, they have the full telemetry and could just set up some filters. If it's an unsupported system dump the data or mark it as low priority.

FWIW, I was having the same issues with 22000.176 after installing KB5006050 and taskbar not working with Event Viewer showing Explorer.exe crashing. Ran Add\Remove programs and uninstalled the update. Did the Time "fix" unchecking internet time and setting ahead a day. Restarted and reinstalled KB5006050. Taskbar is now working. Set back to Internet time and all is well.

The question is, why run an OS on incompatible hardware? Would you run an app that didn't work properly on your device/PC?
Because it's fun pushing the hardware to the limits, because for now these are just some dumb arbitrary limits. Why spend money, make more unnecessary waste just because a app isn't working?

There are many people with 4 years old PC's that can't use Windows 11 because sometime in the distant future MS is gonna implement something that won't work on those systems.

So wasting your time is fun? You have 10 to use for at least four more years and it's a great OS.

I didn't waste a lot of time, just an hour or so for the install because i had to dig through a month of data to get the relevant bits out, and that was a one time thing. Next time i know what to do.

As for why 11, because it's nice testing new things, makes you feel good, etc. Why are people getting a new phone, or a new car when the old is just as fine? :p

Also, 22000.176 was given by Microsoft, i didn't need to use any hack to get it.

Don't see how this is considered wasting time.

Not everyone wants to wait 4 more years just to test Windows 11.

And if people like to tinker with their computers, I'd say just let them.

It doesn't really matter to Microsoft if some people run Windows 11 on older hardware.

They can see what specs people have, and just ignore data from unsupported devices.

And they are most likely already doing this (seeing as people are getting kicked out of the Dev-channel).

Unsupported PC's are also getting a message saying that their computer does not meet the Requirements.

With all of that in mind, data from such devices are most likely being ignored by Microsoft.

You're not likely going to be able to use 11 after the 5th or get support assuming you can install it. To me,. at least, it seems silly to continue to use an OS/App on unsupported hardware but it's your time.

Have fun.

If Microsoft prevents people from running 11 that is already installed on unsupported hardware, I believe that will be a first. I don't expect that, although I can't say its impossible.

Most likely people will just get a message somewhere, urging them to roll back to Windows 10.

Future Updates might stop working too.

But that's about it i bet.

They can't stop you from running it but they can stop supporting the instillation with updates and you might get bugged with popups telling you to install 10 again. Oh and they can degrade what you can do in 11 on unsupported devices.

Will they do this? Don't know but it's possible.

I haven't seen any problem with Taskbar in 22000.176 unlike the users mentioned this above en masse, but because my Taskbar since installation of Windows 11 is classic, thanks to "UndockingDisabled" tweak. And because it switches off the new Start menu, need to use an alternative (Open Shell in my case). However, Taskbar icons have to be added manually...

If you don't like this as a permanent solution, you may use it for a while, then tweak can be removed (replace 1 to 0 or delete the string) and "classic" Start menu may be removed from autorun. I tested this two builds ago (22000.160).

Even if one happens to be able to run Win 11 on unsupported hardware and specs requirements, there won't be any security Updates and the system can get so buggy that at one point one will have to take the right course of action, i.e., get a new computer capable of running Win 11 seamlessly or stay on Win 10 until 2025.
