UPDATE 10/11:

September 30, 2022 - KB5017389 (OS Build 22621.608) Preview

For information about Windows update terminology, see the article about the types of Windows updates and the monthly quality update types. For an overview of Windows 11, version 22H2, see its update history page.

Note Follow @WindowsUpdate to find out when new content is published to the Windows release health dashboard.

Highlights

  • Addresses issues that cause updates to the Microsoft Store to fail.
  • Updates the start date for daylight saving time in Chile. It will start on September 11, 2022 instead of on September 4, 2022.
  • Addresses an issue that affects the font of three Chinese characters. When you format these characters as bold, the width size is wrong.
  • Addresses an issue that forces the IE mode tabs in a session to reload.
  • Addresses an issue that successfully opens a browser window in IE mode to display a PDF file. Later, browsing to another IE mode site within the same window fails.
  • Adds more dynamic Widgets content to your taskbar with notification badging. When you open the Widgets board, a banner appears at the top of the board. It provides more information about what triggered the notification badge.
  • Addresses an issue that affects Dual SIM calling. If you select no SIM on your phone and initiate a call on your device, Dual SIM functionality does not work.
  • Addresses an issue that affects some apps that were not signed by the Microsoft Store. You must reinstall them after you upgrade the OS.

Improvements

This non-security update includes quality improvements. Key changes include:
  • Addresses an issue that affects some apps that were not signed by the Microsoft Store. You must reinstall them after you upgrade the OS.
  • Addresses issues that cause updates to the Microsoft Store to fail.
  • Addresses an issue that stops you from signing in to various Microsoft Office 365 apps. This affects Outlook, Word, Teams, and so on
  • Updates the start date for daylight saving time in Chile. It will start on September 11, 2022 instead of on September 4, 2022.
  • Addresses an issue that affects the Windows Search service. It causes the indexing progress for the service to be slow.
  • Addresses an issue that affects some processors. This issue occurs when you turn on Hyper-V and kernel Direct Memory Access (DMA) protections.
  • Addresses an issue that affects a network’s static IP. The issue causes the configuration of the static IP to be inconsistent. Because of this, NetworkAdapterConfiguration() fails sporadically.
  • Addresses an issue that affects Task Manager. It stops working when you switch between light and dark mode or change the accent color.
  • Addresses an issue that affects the font of three Chinese characters. When you format these characters as bold, the width size is wrong.
  • Addresses an issue that affects graphics drivers that use d3d9on12.dll.
  • Reduces the power that the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol uses on some devices when they are in Sleep mode.
  • Addresses an issue that affects URLs generated by JavaScript: URLs. These URLs do not work as expected when you add them to the Favorites menu in IE mode.
  • Addresses an issue that forces the IE mode tabs in a session to reload.
  • Addresses an issue that affects window.open in IE mode.
  • Addresses an issue that successfully opens a browser window in IE mode to display a PDF file. Later, browsing to another IE mode site within the same window fails.
  • Addresses an issue that affects the Microsoft Japanese input method editor (IME). Text reconversion fails when you use some third-party virtual desktops.
  • Addresses an issue that might cause an application to stop responding. This might occur when the input queue overflows.
  • Addresses an issue that affects XML Paper Specification (XPS) viewers. This might stop you from opening XPS files in some non-English languages. These include some Japanese and Chinese character encodings. This issue affects XPS and Open XPS (OXPS) files.
  • Addresses an issue that creates a duplicate print queue. Because of this, the original print queue stops working.
  • Addresses an issue that might bypass MSHTML and ActiveX rules for Windows Defender Application Control (WDAC).
  • Addresses an issue that affects the Miracast UI. Sometimes it closes too soon when you cast to devices that use the DeviceObjectType:Aep.
  • Adds more dynamic Widgets content to your taskbar with notification badging. When you open the Widgets board, a banner appears at the top of the board. It provides more information about what triggered the notification badge.
  • Addresses an issue that affects the SharedPC account manager. The issue stops it from deleting many accounts during cleanup.
  • Addresses an issue that causes LogonUI.exe to stop working. Because of this, you cannot dismiss the lock screen to view the credentials screen.
  • Addresses an issue that affects Dual SIM calling. If you select no SIM on your phone and initiate a call on your device, Dual SIM functionality does not work.
  • Addresses an issue that affects the FindNextFileNameW() function. It might leak memory.
  • Addresses an issue that affects robocopy. Robocopy fails to set a file to the right modified time when using the /IS option.
  • Addresses an issue that affects cldflt.sys. A stop error occurs when it is used with Microsoft OneDrive.
  • Addresses an issue that affects Roaming User Profiles. After you sign in or sign out, some of your settings are not restored.
  • Addresses an issue that affects the LanmanWorkstation service. It leaks memory when you mount a network drive.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

Windows 11 servicing stack update - 22621.378

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

Known issues in this update

Applies toSymptomWorkaround
IT adminsUsing provisioning packages on Windows 11, version 22H2 (also called Windows 11 2022 Update) might not work as expected. Windows might only be partially configured, and the Out Of Box Experience might not finish or might restart unexpectedly. Provisioning packages are .PPKG files which are used to help configure new devices for use on business or school networks. Provisioning packages which are applied during initial setup are most likely to be impacted by this issue. For more information on provisioning packages, please see Provisioning packages for Windows.

Note Provisioning Windows devices using Windows Autopilot is not affected by this issue.

Windows devices used by consumers in their home or small offices are not likely to be affected by this issue.
If you can provision the Windows device before upgrading to Windows 11, version 22H2, this will prevent the issue.

We are presently investigating and will provide an update in an upcoming release.
IT adminsCopying large multiple gigabyte (GB) files might take longer than expected to finish on Windows 11, version 22H2. You are more likely to experience this issue copying files to Windows 11, version 22H2 from a network share via Server Message Block (SMB) but local file copy might also be affected.Windows devices used by consumers in their home or small offices are not likely to be affected by this issue. To mitigate this issue, you can use file copy tools that do not use cache manager (buffered I/O). This can be done by using the built-in command-line tools listed below:

robocopy \\someserver\someshare c:\somefolder somefile.img /J

or

xcopy \\someserver\someshare c:\somefolder /J

We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.
All usersCertain applications might stop responding when you use keyboard shortcuts to turn on, turn off, or change the input mode of the Input Method Editor (IME).

Examples of actions that might cause this issue:
  • For Japanese:
    • Using the Hankaku/Zenkaku (半角 / 全角) key on a Japanese keyboard
    • Using the default keyboard shortcut: holding down the Alt key and pressing ~ (tilde)
  • For Chinese:
    • Using the default keyboard shortcut: holding down the Control key and pressing Space
  • For Korean:
    • Using the default keyboard shortcut: pressing the right Alt key
This issue is observed for applications that load certain components of the Text Services Framework (TSF). Applications that don't load these components should not experience this issue.
This issue is addressed in KB5020044.

How to get this update

Before installing this update

Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates and Servicing Stack Updates (SSU): Frequently Asked Questions.

Install this update

Release ChannelAvailableNext Step
Windows Update or Microsoft UpdateYesGo to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. In the Optional updates available area, you’ll find the link to download and install the update.
Windows Update for BusinessNoNone. These changes will be included in the next security update to this channel.
Microsoft Update CatalogYesTo get the standalone package for this update, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website.
Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)NoYou can import this update into WSUS manually. See the Microsoft Update Catalog for instructions.

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

Go to C:\Program Files\7-zip and in there double click on 7zFM.exe
In that window, choose: Tools > Options

That's where you can move ISO and CAB to the right side.
If I remember correctly, you just highlight ISO and then click the + sign over the right column. Do the same for CAB files.
You'll have to click the + sign over the right column "twice" then click Apply, to make it look like in my pic. :-)

If you don't set it up this way, then when you right click and ISO, you won't see "Mount".
All the tutorials expect you to see "Mount" when you right click an ISO.

I think Alexey2912 is using terminology too loosely here. The ISO downloaded by option is a 'multi edition' ISO. You can in fact extract its contents to a folder using 7-Zip File Manager, which I suspect is what Alexey2912 meant. But there will be no MCT there to run, you start the upgrade by running Setup.exe.

Ah, that I just what I thought you had done. Thank you for clearing that up.
7-zip handles ISO files in a different way. You may have the .iso file associated with 7-zip instead of file explorer.
Something different in your settings. 🤣
Right click on the ISO file and select Mount, or Open with Windows Explorer. Then the mounted ISO will show.

It will be mounted, and a Disk letter is assigned. In this case (E:)

@Bree , 7 Zip is my default app with extensions to all files including isos, that could be the reason that is downloaded in & Zip...….I did nothing, no compression etc.
It is not strictly accurate to describe the ISO you downloaded as a 'zipped file', it wasn't. But calling it such has confused a few readers. An ISO file is not a .zip archive, ISO is a file format that can be burned directly to a DVD. It just happens that 7-Zip can open it as if it were an archive allowing you to view or extract the files it contains,

You downloaded the ISO, used 7-Zip to open it, then extracted the contents to a folder where you could use it to do your upgrade. Most of us mount the ISO as a virtual DVD drive and run Setup from there. Either way works.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

This is a weird inconsistency.
In R.P. channel the Build has been updated to 22621.608, but the Windows Insider Program page still shows 22621.607. 🤐

@Alexey2912,

Here is another example that fits your case.
Just replace the path with the path of the folder where you extracted the files from the ISO using 7-zip. 😉
In my case I extracted the whole ISO content in the folder indicated below on my D: drive.
D:\AllMyStuff\Win11-22H2\Windows11-22621-525-MCT

If you now have Tabs in File Explorer, then yes. If not, then no.
The October "Moment" is supposed to bring Tabs to File Explorer, unless that gets postponed again.

Make a backup, first. :-)

I imagine you remember the ViveTool. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
I don't recall it ever hurting anything, but better safe than sorry.

The discrepancy has been fixed on 10/01/2022 at 9:56 PM Pacific time when MS finally fixed the connection to the Insider Servers that had problems from the night before.
Now the Windows Insider Program page shows the correct build 22621.608. 👍
There were other users reporting similar issues on Beta and Dev channel.

Well the Task manager thing is easy... just go to C:\Windows\System32 and right click Taskmgr.exe and choose: Pin to Taskbar
I automatically do that on every OS since Win 7.
I f you want to chage it's icon first, then choose: Send to > Desktop (create shortcut). Then change it's icon, then Pin to Taskbar.

When I want to change icons, I always "Browse" to C:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll, and use those icons. Huge list!

I meant same way it's in Insider dev, right click on Taskbar. and comes up together with Taskbar settings. No clutter but it's available fast.
