Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 23H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5044380)

I have just installed this update onto my Windows 11 Laptop.
The result was a Black Screen and basically an unusable system.
I managed, with difficulty, to restore the System back to the state before the update.
I have postponed Updates until this problem can be resolved.
Any assistance/advise would be much appreciated

Has anybody else reported problems with this update?

No, I just received that update this morning, but haven't downloaded it or installed it yet. Guess I will put it on the shelf for a while. I looked it up and don't see that it's very useful. At least for me. Most users recommend that you don't install it and wait for the cumulative update.

This is suppose to be a optional update, but I don't see a way of opting out.

Hi! I'm having the same issue here.

After the KB5044380 update, my explorer.exe has been stuck in a crash loop. I can't even open the settings, since it closes automatically after opening it. The taskbar is also missing. It won't even let me open the Windows using the Windows key. I can only open the task manager.

How did you manage to restore the system back to the state before the update, please?

I uninstalled the last update with cmd: wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:5044380 and it still didn't work.

Any advice would be really helpful! Thanks!

It happened to me and I managed to do a system restore to a previous restore point. Restart the computer holding the shift key and I will restart giving you options. Select Advanced Repair and there is an option to go to a restore point. It takes around 5-7 minutes to complete.

Hi! So, I tried this, but holding the shift key while restarting doesn't give me this option (it goes directly to the Windows boot manager, where it gives me the option to start the windows 11, which is crashed, or to run a windows memory diagnostic).

I tried again, holding the shift key from the shutting down to the restart and now it entered the boot menu. However, When I click on the Troubleshoot there isn't "Advanced options" or "Reset this PC".

I also tried reset through these two ways:
1) Recover to a previous date: windows key + R > rstrui >> However the only recover entry is after intalling the update
2) Pressing F8 while starting the PC. But there isn't a "remove latest quality update".

So I guess it's not just me battling with this POFS KB? I installed it manually and said successful. Windows update says not installed and wont download. Get the KB5044380 download error 0x80248014
Can't stand Microshaft. So glad I use macs at home. Windows is a POFS and always will be.
Trying to clean this up prior to getting a gold image of this machine.

Yea after install of KB5044380, I got a black screen. So I hit ctrl/alt/delete started run new task, control panel, Ran programs and features and uninstalled "ep_setup.exe" and Black Screen disappeared. Windows doesn't like us using certain apps and programs so they made it a problem to use. I can only use "ep_setup.exe" on windows before KB5044380. Any laptop that I updated to that release is having problems. I am trying to uninstall KB5044380 but am having much difficulty, it seems to be permanent even though settings gives the option. Hope this helps

I haven't had crashes, but this update appears to break icon customization. I'm holding off on the update for now.

Same problem here system boots to a black screen, Uninstalling Riva Tuner and Afterburner made no difference, System restore did not solve the problem, so I reset the computer 2 or 3 times when it was booting to get into Win Repair mode, the advanced options allowed me to uninstall the update so am now working again.

I also had the bsod after this update on my laptop. While in the black i did a ctrl+alt+del and choose Management and New Task as administrator I opened the command screen by typing cmd. Now I could type wusa /uninstall /kb:5044380 and the uninstall worked perfect. After restart I could not get rid of the update first, but with "Windows Update MiniTool" it was possible to disable the update from re-appearing.
