Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.3950 (KB5055653) to the Beta Channel for Windows Insiders on Windows 11, version 24H2.

REMINDER: Build 22635.5305 was the last update released to the Beta Channel based on Windows 11, version 23H2. All Insiders in the Beta Channel will be getting upgraded to Windows 11, version 24H2 soon. Until that happens, Insiders on Windows 11, version 23H2 in the Beta Channel can choose to upgrade to Windows 11, version 24H2 and this build today if they want.

Changes in Beta Channel builds and updates are documented in two buckets: new features, improvements, and fixes that are being gradually rolled out for Insiders who have turned on the toggle to get the latest updates as they are available (via Settings > Windows Update*) and then new features, improvements, and fixes rolling out to everyone in the Beta Channel.   • Fixed an underlying issue which was causing keyboard focus to get set to widgets in the taskbar on login, which could make widgets unexpectedly invoke.
  • Fixed an issue where WIN + CTRL + <number> wasn’t working to cycle between windows of open apps for that position on the taskbar.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

MS changed something recently. Probably another silly experiment. 😵‍💫😝🤬🤷‍♂️
As soon as I hit Win + Shift + S the context menu that I want to capture just closes. 🤣🤷‍♂️
Same problem on latest public Build 36100.3915. 🤷‍♂️

Different version of Snipping tool, same issue.

That 36100.3915 public build is a Preview build, I generally don't bother to install those. I did on one machine though, and can confirm your findings. Not only does Win+Shift+S close the context menu, it doesn't even open the snipping tool. That, I think, is a clue to this bug. The snipping tool fails to launch fully with a context menu on the screen.

When I used Win+Shift+S on the April Patch Tuesday build 26100.3775 for the screenshot in post #21 it did indeed appear to close the context menu as soon as I pressed Win_Shift+S. The tool's cursor appeared immediately. Shortly after that the screen darkened, the snipping toolbar appeared, and the context menu came back so it could be snipped.

I had to record a video snip and slow it down 10x to see this clearly.

I have the problem now on all my machines with Builds 26100.3915. 26120.3950, 26200.5570 and Canary 27842.1000.
Not sure when they actually broke it, as I said earlier, it used to work not too long ago. 😵‍💫🤣🤷‍♂️

On 5/11/2025 I verified that it now fails the same way also with 23H2 Build 22631.5262. 🤣🤣🤣

For RTM that was with build 26100.3915, my working 26100.3775 is the previous public build, the latest PT build.

Weird that if I open the old file explorer from the control panel (hit up arrow twice) then the context menu stays open when I hit Win + Shift + S and I can take the snip. 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫🤣🤣🤷‍♂️

The old Explorer is a win32 .exe, the new one is an app. So is the snipping tool. I guess it's a weird interaction between the two apps.

I usually don't bother to install these Preview updates, so I still have plenty of machines on April's PT build 26100.3775. Snipping Tool works normally in all of them.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

I just restored 26100.3775 and it fails the same way for me on this build too. 🤣🤷‍♂️

Probably another one of those experimental feature or fixes that adds a new bug. 🤣🤣🤣🤬

I don't use Vivetool or any reg mods on my Beta build. There is no ....Overrides\14 key on my system. You should be able to just delete the '14' key to revert.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

At least Win + PrintScreen still works to get a full screenshot. Then I can snip the portion that I need from the full screen picture. 😉🤷‍♂️
The Win + Shift + S now fails on all builds when a file explorer context menu is open. Instead of starting a snip it just closes the file explorer context menu. No idea on how MS added this problem. Looks like another one of their failed experiments. 😵‍💫🤬🤷‍♂️

I also tried a clean install of Canary 27842.1000 and got the same problem. 🤬🤣🤷‍♂️
