This out-of-band update for Windows 11, version 25H2 and 24H2 (KB5086672) is cumulative and includes updates from previous security and non-security releases.

This update includes the improvements and features that were introduced in the March 26, 2026 non-security preview update (KB5079391), along with a fix for an installation issue that affected some devices attempting to install that update.

Improvements​

This out-of-band update contains quality improvements from KB5079473 (released March 10, 2026), KB5085516 (released March 21, 2026), and KB5079391 (released March 26, 2026 - no longer offered). The following summary outlines key issues addressed by this out-of-band update. The bold text within the brackets indicates the item or area of the change.
  • [Setup] Fixed: While installing the March 2026 Windows preview update (KB5079391), some devices running Windows 11, version 25H2 or 24H2, might encounter the following error:

    Some update files are missing or have problems. We'll try to download the update again later. Error code: (0x80073712)
This out-of-band update is offered through Windows Update for devices running Windows 11 that have already installed KB5079473 or a later update. It is also available for manual download from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Devices that have Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available turned on may see this update offered automatically through Windows Update when it becomes available for their device. If this setting is turned off, you can install the update manually by going to Settings > Windows Update and selecting Download & install.

Note: IT administrators using Microsoft Intune or Windows Autopatch should follow the guidance below for installing the out-of-band update via Windows Update.

If you want to remove the LCU

Before you decide to remove the LCU, see Understanding the risks: Why you should not uninstall security updates.

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

Cool. What made this novel problem doubly frustrating for me was that I was working on some low-level WinSock code in AutoHotkey v1, which is not the greatest language to do this in, and all of a sudden, my code started failing out of the blue. It had been a few hours since I updated the file server, booted it back into Windows, and resumed Bitlocker, just like every other Windows Update before, so I wasn't thinking about it at all. It took a few minutes of staring at my AHK code before I realized that while my code wasn't directly using the server, the Android and Linux devices the code was communicating with WERE using the server, so that's when I tried to RDP into it. When that failed, I had to walk across the house and hook up a screen to the headless thing to see what was going on.

It was so, so uncool for Windows Update to schedule a reboot for a system that NEVER automatically reboots and then do it in the middle of the day, a few hours after Windows Update had finished like it finished hundreds of times before. I really hope this was a one-off.

LOL. Yeah, just a couple days ago, when Microsoft released that latest out of band update (26200.8117), I was using one of my machines via remote desktop. I step away a short while to grab a coffee. I came back and the machine had rebooted to install that update.

The ironic thing is that I had started setting every machine to not pull-down updates for several weeks. I then turn that off when I am good and ready to allow it to install updates. After the updates I turn it back on again. But that is a pain in the keister to keep after on all my machines. Clearly, I missed this system. The problem was that I had just recently started doing that and it is not habit yet.

The whole process of Windows updates needs a bit of an overhaul in my opinion. Maybe if Microsoft is serious about improving Windows 11 this will get addressed along with other items that make a real difference to users.

Turns out there's a fair bit of discussion about my issue, that I found by googling "what is C:\WINDOWS\uus\packages\preview\AMD64\MoUsoCoreWorker.exe". For example:

No one knows why, at least not from the two threads I scanned. Seems normal, so I'll forget it ever happened by tomorrow. BTW, it didn't happen on my main PC, just my headless file server, as if Microsoft's goal was to maximize my perplexity.

I would abandon Armoury Crate. Unfortunately Realtek makes Audio chips and supply's drivers for it. In the past ASUS made some software for their products line AI Suite 3, Sonic Studio 3 etc. They have now done away with these products in favor of Armoury Crate. An alternative is a third party company that takes over that role. Realtek tried it with 3D SoundBack Beta 0.1 but this was only intended for Vista. No more development after that.

I found somewhat of a solution. The Realtek Control Panel inside the Microsoft Store is totally crap. It can't do anything more with settings than Windows 11 already could. I have looked at FxSound and that product comes a bit closer to the old Sonic Studio. At first you must install the latest Audio drivers from ASUS for your motherboard. Then install FXSound. FxSound is a free product and runs into the background. Inside the App you can control the frequency settings like an equalizer can and adjust some other sound effects. There are a lot of standard settings to choose from. Like Movies, Games, Music etc. You can choose a setting and configure to your liking. You can save these settings <name> and you can recall this settings to load or choose this <name>.
While the app is running on the background it is available in the systemtray. From there you can adjust some settings for comparison.

I find it useful, it gives each type of sound a different ambiance. Check it out: FxSound | Boost Your Sound Experience Now

I wondered what happened with that update! I was installing it on my last machine, the laptop. I walked away and when I came back it had already rebooted, not like all other updates that "suggested" I reboot or it would wait until inactive hours. On the other machines I had just rebooted to finish it, so I didn't see that behavior.

Yes please do. I am curious what you think about this program. Found one disadvantage. It is started as a startup app. That is not an issue as long as it behaves like a background proces. With the icon in the systray you can change settings. But when system logs in: bam; the full initial screen keeps just appearing. I have to close it and it keeps running as a background proces. I don't want to see that full screen at startup each time. Maybe there is a way to start the program on a silent way. Will look and try if this is possible.....

I'm getting an issue after this new update where I don't have an internet connection. My network icon says I'm connected and network troubleshooter says there are no issues found.

Tried the FX sound out , I had come across this before when it was chargeable, Realtek audio console asks for sound enhancements to be disabled , so having overridden that setting I added FX . IMO the best setting for sound options is "default" rather than "pop" "R&B etc There is a fairly narrow band of settings in the "clarity" "Ambience" section which if you dont overset , is good . A slight increase on any of these settings can leave the sound a bit raspy .
Some of my source sounds are old Spotify tracks from 80's onwards , and some are you tube music videos so perhaps not a fair cross section of choice !
All in all its worth using ....many thanks .

To prevent it running on startup , I can very highly recommend "Hibit Uninstaller" which has multiple other free functions built in . one of which is the "Startup Manager" which used to be a separate program and shows as able to holdback FX on startup

If that returns four replies with no errors, try this.

Since installing the 26200.8117 update KB5086672 my System Five, a fully supported device for Windows 11, fails to resume from hibernation. Instead it performs a clean boot. The Event Log shows 'Windows failed to resume from hibernate with error status 0xC0000022' and 'The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first'.

Unistalling KB5086672 restores normal hibernation.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I already use Yamicsoft Windows 11 Manager who has also has a Startup Manager onboard. (Next to the magnificent Registry cleaner and Junk cleanup capability's and much more other features. Check it out...)

That 0xC0000022 error points towards an access denied issue when it wanted to access the hibernation.sys file. I think that in your case with KB5086672 it could not write to this hibernation.sys file in the first place.

After falling in sleep it could not write it's correct state into this file and shuts down. At startup it could not correct it's former state and did a clean boot with this error into the eventviewer.

I would recommend to fix your system first with Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and SFC /scannow first and than retry KB5086672 or 26200.8117. Can't see what this OOB has something to do with that access denied issue. The other explanation is that your system was damaged before applying KB5086672. There is a possibility that after applying KB5086672 those DISM and SFC commands were executed and failed to notice this issue. An issue that would require an In-Place-Installment to resolve this situation in the end. An one-off incident because other systems you have did not showed this issue. (I presume. I don't use this hibernation feature in order to a) save space on my C-drive and b) I never had used this feature in the past. I always shutdown my machine....)

I have a serious problem with this update: cardfile.exe does not run anymore, it stops with an error message that it cannot access an entry in a shared dll in the program itself.
Cardfile.exe is an old MS tool, kind of a very simple database with a specific data file structure.
I definitely don't want to lose this tool, so I removed the update. But it will come back...

I tried CARDFILE.EXE and it just says it can't run on my PC. I think it's a 16 bit application. You may need to run it in a virtual machine.
