This out-of-band update for Windows 11, version 25H2 and 24H2 (KB5086672) is cumulative and includes updates from previous security and non-security releases.

This update includes the improvements and features that were introduced in the March 26, 2026 non-security preview update (KB5079391), along with a fix for an installation issue that affected some devices attempting to install that update.

Improvements​

This out-of-band update contains quality improvements from KB5079473 (released March 10, 2026), KB5085516 (released March 21, 2026), and KB5079391 (released March 26, 2026 - no longer offered). The following summary outlines key issues addressed by this out-of-band update. The bold text within the brackets indicates the item or area of the change.
  • [Setup] Fixed: While installing the March 2026 Windows preview update (KB5079391), some devices running Windows 11, version 25H2 or 24H2, might encounter the following error:

    Some update files are missing or have problems. We'll try to download the update again later. Error code: (0x80073712)
This out-of-band update is offered through Windows Update for devices running Windows 11 that have already installed KB5079473 or a later update. It is also available for manual download from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Devices that have Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available turned on may see this update offered automatically through Windows Update when it becomes available for their device. If this setting is turned off, you can install the update manually by going to Settings > Windows Update and selecting Download & install.

Note: IT administrators using Microsoft Intune or Windows Autopatch should follow the guidance below for installing the out-of-band update via Windows Update.

Windows 11 servicing stack update (KB5079387)- 26100.8112​

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. If you want to remove the LCU

Before you decide to remove the LCU, see Understanding the risks: Why you should not uninstall security updates.

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

There is something wrong with your Windows system. Run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and SFC /scannow to resolve this error. Then retry.

If nothing else usually a repair install will solve the install errors. It will save all your apps, settings, and customizations. Just be patient as it takes a while.

It's the same as 8116. But now it incorporates a fix that occurred when 8116 was installed; Some people got an error during 8116. That's now fixed with 8117. No other issues were addressed with 8117 (like Smart App Control) It's the same as 8116 but now that bug has been solved and is incorporated in 8117.
If 8116 was installed successful than this OOB only fixes the bug that came with 8116. So it's not affecting future updates.

I installed the update; DISM ran without any issues, but SFC Scan found corrupt files and repaired them.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.
For online repairs, details are included in the CBS log file located at
windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For offline
repairs, details are included in the log file provided by the /OFFLOGFILE flag.

Could it be that this update fixed something but left the old files behind, hehe?
That’s what it looks like to me.

UPD: the second SFC run didn’t find any corrupted files.
If I used DISM first, and then SFC found corrupted files and repaired them, is it necessary to run DISM, or can I skip it until the next update?

I bet the corrupt files were to do with Bluetooth, it's standard with SFC. Loads of users have the same error

Same where I work at. New Regional "Manager" comes in and friggin' ruined the whole well oiled machine, to make changes just to change things, whether it makes sense or not. BLITHERING KNOB!

3 restarts on a supported computer and 2 on an unsupported PC, no issues so far. Smart App Control seems to be far too restrictive when enabled, I rather switch it off.

Before Microsoft renamed this option from "Windows Repair," this feature actually worked great. Whatever Microsoft did when it got renamed to "Reinstall now" does not work that often. I gave up on using this option because it just wasted time.

I still use the same reliable method from Windows 95 days to now. Wipe and reload Windows. That method is the most reliable because during these repairs installs, you have no idea what else it may break or fix with corrupting something else.

Interesting you feel that way, I've had great success using it just from Sep 2025 through Feb 2026 on two different PC's. One is an intel machine and one is an ARM64 machine but I've used it five times on each machine just in those months. The repair installs were due to a combo of my force removing un-reclaimable packages from the component store and just buggy Windows updates that gave many users install problems. It always did a full install taking me to the latest current build while saving everything exactly as I left it except for a few custom Start menu icons I had to reset afterwards. It's worked great for me but hoping I won't need it again. 🤞🏽

With the volume of Windows computer and business time constraints of getting a Windows system running again for the end user to remain productive, I have to use the best approach. We have used the "Reinstall now" option a few times where it worked, but that is a rare occasion. Now we just wipe and reload Windows 11 systems because it seems faster. We always download the latest Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft's web site to get these system reloaded faster. I see a large variety of Windows problems and some problems you just can't correct in an hour.

I ignored last weeks update in favour of waiting to see any revisions and then installed this .......................!

As attached , there is now an error in Armoury Crate which had Sonic Studio and Asus Antenna feature working ok for about 2 years until this update .

This error has been advised by AI as probably resulting from this 8117 update , and affecting 790 series boards ( how many who knows )

Realtek is working normally and no compensating direct download for Sonic from M /Store registers .

Reversing the update x 3 reboots is still causing a problem
There were no intervening A Crate updates during this particular Windows update time frame .

I don't know how many restarts it did, I walked away when it completed downloading. I know the whole process only took around 10 minutes or so, when I came back it was all rebooted and waiting for my PIN. All checked were normal, no file corruption found.
