Windows Secure Boot certificate expiration
Important
Secure Boot certificates used by most Windows devices were set to expire starting in June 2026. Microsoft has been updating these certificates on PCs and non-managed business devices for the past months. Devices that haven’t received the newer certificates will continue to start, and standard Windows updates will continue to install. We will continue to install the newer certificates via Windows updates in the coming months.

End of updates
Windows 11, version 24H2 Home and Pro editions will reach end of updates on October 13, 2026. Devices running these editions will no longer receive fixes for known issues, time zone updates, technical support, or monthly security and preview updates containing protections from the latest security threats. Enterprise and Education editions remain supported until October 12, 2027.

To stay protected and up to date, we recommend you upgrade to the latest version of Windows 11.

Servicing stack update
Includes KB5123304 (Build 26100.9156), which improves the reliability of the Windows update installation process. To learn more about SSUs, see Simplifying on-premises deployment of servicing stack updates.

Known issues in this update​

Symptoms

Microsoft received reports of issues involving inability to run certain games as expected after installing this update.

Ongoing investigation indicates that this issue is associated with certain peripherals or internal device components that support RGB lighting features. These devices might install drivers or software components with file names similar to inpoutx64. On systems where these drivers are found, launching certain games can trigger this issue.

Games identified in reports of this issue include ARC Raiders, MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, and THE FINALS. Reported symptoms include:
  • the game application becomes unresponsive
  • the game application closes without notice
  • the error "EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION" is displayed
  • the device restarts without warning

Workaround

This issue can be prevented by temporarily disabling the inpoutx64 driver using the Windows registry.

Important

This article contains information about how to modify the registry. Make sure that you back up the registry before you modify it. Make sure that you know how to restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up, restore, and modify the registry, see How to back up and restore the registry in Windows.
Follow these steps to disable the driver via the Windows registry:
  • Open the Windows registry. This can be done by opening the Start menu and typing regedit. Select the Registry Editor from the results.
  • Navigate to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\inpoutx64. This can be done using the folders on the left side of the window, or typing the path into the address line at the top of the window.

    Note
    Ensure you have backed up the registry, as per the important note above. It may be necessary if you need to undo the change in the following steps.
  • On the right side of the window, find the registry value named Start. Double click this key and enter the number 4 under the field titled Value data.
  • Close the window and restart your computer.
Please note, it is possible that disabling this registry key can result in unintended behavior, such as issues with RGB features on peripherals or components, or issues with the software used to control RGB features. If you experience such issues and want to restore that functionality, you may re-enable the driver by restoring the registry key to its previous value. You can restore the registry following the steps provided at How to back up and restore the registry in Windows.

Microsoft is investigating the interaction between these RGB-related components and the affected games. Additional details will be provided as they become available.

How to get this update​

Before you install this update

Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates.

Deployment​

If you deploy dynamic updates such as this update to an existing Windows image, ensure the boot.stl file is included as part of the installation media. Failure to include the file might prevent devices from successfully starting from the installation media and can result in error code 0xc0430001.

Note
The boot.stl file is used during Secure Boot validation and must match the Windows version and architecture of the image you are updating.

To ensure the boot.stl file is included as part of the installation media, do one of the following:
  • Use the Update WinPE script to update an existing Windows image. (Recommended)
  • Manually copy the boot.stl file from the device Windows\Boot\EFI folder to the corresponding folder on your installation media before deploying the update.

Why it’s suddenly widespread (the “hot topic” part)​

Windows 11 25H2 is being serviced by:

  • 26100‑series SSUs
  • 26200‑series CUs
  • Feature Experience Packs with their own versioning
This creates a scenario where:


DISM depends on the SSU. When the SSU is behind, DISM breaks.


2.​

Multiple reports show DISM failing even with a stable internet connection because:


This forces users to rely on ISO repair sources — but Microsoft has not yet published matching ISOs for every 26200.x cumulative update.


3.​

Users report:

  • DISM jumps from 64% → 100% → error
  • SFC reports no integrity violations
  • Windows Update fails with 0x80073712
This indicates metadata corruption, not file corruption — exactly the type of issue DISM cannot fix without a matching SSU.

Microsoft acknowledged a RestoreHealth regression in mid‑2026 and patched it in build 26200.8655, but newer builds (e.g., 26200.8894) still show the same symptoms.

Yup, thus I asked an unbiased question about why DISM/RestoreHealth issues have now become such a hot topic on all the latest Windows builds. I would say that's a pretty unbiased straight forward answer it gave.

Sorry for the late reply. Yesterday (Monday the 17th, 2026), it was 103°F outside and my house hit 97°F, so I didn't even turn on my PCs.
I actually ran sfc /scannow as my first line of troubleshooting and it didn't find any errors. However, as I mentioned while reading this thread, I decided to do some testing. I ran these tests on my three PCs, and here are the results:
  • Dell XPS 8930: It triggered the errors in question, but RestoreHealth ran successfully.
  • Optiplex 3050: It also triggered the errors, but RestoreHealth ran successfully.
  • Inspiron 3650: It threw the same errors, but even after following all the steps you guys suggested, it failed.
For the Inspiron 3650, I tried running:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:G:\sources\install.esd /LimitAccess
I tried it with and without the index, and also with and without /LimitAccess. The source image was indeed created via the Media Creation Tool (MCT).
All of them are fully updated to build 26200.9168. I honestly don't think my two unsupported PCs are going to survive this "death by a thousand cuts" from Microsoft! 😂

I already made that decision. However, it's still certainly "broken" because you can no longer use DISM to fix the component store! If something does happen to it, now your only recourse is a repair install.

DISM is not "broken". It still does it's job. The only thing is; that it is downloading 2x 256Mb (2nd is a retry that fails) when nothing is wrong all the time.
I explained it already in thread #243. When something is wrong; it still repairs. I saw this for myself after an previous update was installed. Saw that after the update many packages were deemed "corrupted" (A very strange thing. Before the update nothing was wrong, and only after the update is was.) RestoreHealth repaired everything. From this point of view RestoreHealth is not only broken! The only thing that is wrong now; it takes longer to finish....

I noticed the new behavior inside the CBS.log with 8655. I for some time watch the logging progress when doing a RestoreHealth. It's logging started to produce new lines that was not seen before in a previous build. MS has made some changes to the CBS-engine. I investigated it further. I installed 8037 (Official v2 ISO of 25H2) on a VM. Updated the system thinking it went straight to update the system to the latest build as seen before. I did not!.. It stopped first to update to 8655 first. A second update went to the final build. Some proof you can't pass by 8655 because there was a major change; that change in the CBS-engine. After that I noticed that the duration of RestoreHealth went from normally 4 minutes in my case to 14 minutes. This behavior is still present with 9168 despite the fact I reported this issue in detail to Microsoft..... They still didn't gave me a reaction on this complaint. I reported it this before on a Microsoft forum first; A spokesperson saw the issue but could not take it further into his chain. He advise me to report this to Microsoft. So I did. He said some more technical skilled people can take a look at it. Till now? Silence....

In your case your attempts to fix things with /RestoreHealth broke off with an error. That is something different! You system is broken in such a way that even /RestoreHealth can't fix it. (outside the range of what RestoreHealth can fix. An error in the registry that can not be fixed.) The only method to fix things in your case; is to do a fresh install. I suggested this earlier. This will fix your issue 100%!!.....

In your case your attempts to fix things with /RestoreHealth broke off with an error. That is something different! You system is broken in such a way that even /RestoreHealth can't fix it. (outside the range of what RestoreHealth can fix. An error in the registry that can not be fixed.) The only method to fix things in your case; is to do a fresh install. I suggested this earlier. This will fix your issue 100%!!.....

For reasons that you obviously don't get, I'm pretty reluctant to do a clean install because it entails many hours of work to install and configure some of my software packages. 🙄 Not everyone has the time to blow doing endless installs of their Windows environment.

Since a bunch of people here are experiencing the exact same symptoms, I feel it's something that Microsoft should be addressing. If a bunch of people in this forum are seeing the exact same error, over the roughly one billion Win11 users, surely there's a lot of people that have the same failure. In addition, since the repair install seems not to fix it, I suspect that the component store is fine, it was just totally replaced! Also, SFC runs clean, another indication that this is not a component store issue.

Exactly this. I've been following this thread since the Aug 11th update. 2 of my 3 PCs suffered the DISM - store is reparable - can't find repair files anywhere issue. Sadly one is my main PC with lots of multimedia recording/editing software etc, the other just general purpose. After trying to restore from ISO failed I tried the WU repair reinstall - that failed on both. Next was restoring Clonezilla images on both PCs, WU again, same symptoms again. The general purpose is still in that state, my main I restored the image again and paused WU - DISM works as usual.

Really would hate to have to clean install, as the quote says, massive several day task.

I'm taking the position that I believe the component store is fine since I've tried three different variations of the repair install, all completed without any indication of errors. The repair install should replace the entire component store, so this error appears to be something that doesn't get replaced during a repair install. That points to the registry as the obvious culprit, but I suspect there could be other causes. SFC /SCANNOW also runs error-free against the component store, a further indication that the component store is intact.

So far, other than Windows losing a driver for one of my Microchip development tools, Windows has still run OK, so I'm adopting a wait-n-see attitude to see if Microsoft is going to address these issues.

FWIW, four other Win11 machines don't have this problem here after doing the same update, not sure what triggers it.

I get you. I have issues with Snagit. I tried I don't know how many fixes but I can't put my finger on the issue apart that this update, messes with it.

I don't believe that's correct. (@garlin? Thoughts?) Setup does replace a lot of Windows components and may refresh servicing-related files, but it is not the same operation as a DISM RestoreHealth.

I can tell you that we're seeing, on about 25% of devices, a component store that's repairable, and RestoreHealth doesn't work. We have to run a repair setup, after which ScanHealth says the component store is still repairable. But after the repair setup, RestoreHealth works. So setup must be fixing enough of the servicing components to allow RestoreHealth to work on subsequent runs.

So for us, on this 25% of machines, it's
  • RestoreHealth (fails)
  • Repair setup (succeeds)
  • ScanHealth - still Repairable, not Healthy
  • RestoreHealth (succeeds)
