I have 2 machines on 23H2 working fine and have not been offered the update on either. Personally I see no urgency to update and going to wait until it is offered. If you do force the update be aware of some the issues people are experiencing and decide for yourself.

I moved back to Windows 8.1 on one of my PCs and WOW what a difference! Snappy, responsive, reliable, and no glitching. All the drivers work, no bangs in the device manager. Programs open on execution. (No waiting.) Just amazing. I don't know what makes Windows 11 run so crappy on the 4 other PCs I installed it on. My laptop was upgraded but I had to roll back to 23H2. Still not impressed. I don't expect Windows 12 will get any better either what with the Consortium catering to AI and all the Big Brother tech. Perhaps they'll have it all worked out in time to let us know that support for Windows 11 is about to end. After all, isn't that what they did with Win 10?

Comparison on Performance and Compatibility

  • Windows 8.1: Lightweight and runs well on older hardware, making it a good choice for legacy systems. However, it lacks the optimizations and improvements found in later Windows versions.
  • Windows 11: Optimized for modern processors, with better memory and resource management. It also supports DirectStorage, which speeds up game and app load times on SSDs, and is more secure with TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot requirements. The entire 24h2 upgrade has been a fiasco IMO. The OS was rushed and not ready for prime time. Simple as that.
Agreed. But, hey . . . It's only a "distro". More versions will come. Win 8 was a disaster until 8.1 was released. IMO Win 8.1 should have been named Windows 9. The reason's given don't wash. Win 8.1 was as different from Win 8 as Win 7 was different from Vista. But I digress. A man gets old and set in his ways. He gets accustomed to something that works for him and he wants to keep it. Sure, he may wish to make minor improvements and tweaks; perhaps he may even wish to personalize it a little. Yet he is happy with what he has and does not need it to be any faster, leaner, or meaner. That sort of man is a dinosaur. He is left on the wayside of oblivion and considered obsolete to make way for what some would regard "new and improved". Meanwhile support for that which works and works well is pulled. Time marches on and the wheel of progress continues to take whatever direction the Consortium deems worthy. Perhaps I have already said too much. Perhaps I haven't stated enough. We are all entitled to our opinions and I certainly agree with yours on this count.

However, older hardware may be incompatible with Windows 11’s requirements

My finding is that the said optimizations and improvements found in later Windows versions are often buggy and unreliable. Some work well but many others are disastrous. Trust is a two-way street we are told, but the entire TPM thing was NOT designed so that the user could trust Windows but more the other way around. How many times has TPM been caught with her pants around her ankles? How many times has she had her keys stolen or has been flat out hacked? The girl has a history and her sister version two is no different in this regard. One would think that after a decade of consistent failure the Consortium would turn to a different security solution but it hasn't. No, it has shareholders to please. Trading off TPM1 for TPM2 is no assurance of security. What speeds up game and app loading times is better bandwidth and lower latency. This is attained through better hardware. I see no reason why software cannot be upgraded to comply with improvements in hardware by means of a simple update. After all, isn't this what actually occurs even when we upgrade to a different "distro", version, whatever?

What I find so deplorably laughable is when PCs not even three years old are rendered obsolete because the hardware isn't compliant with the newest version of Windows. That isn't a mistake. That's just the Consortium being environmentally conscious. They're very savvy about their financial environment after all. Who can blame them? We could all use a tax break.

Gave Dell touch screen with Windows 11 to daughter and got me an OTVOC. Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.
Have to quit with several software ( "not compatible with 24H2 " ) , boottime takes 3 times longer compared with 23H2 , not interested in Copilot , IA ( AI?) , etc ...........
So, for me this upgrade is a big step back , my 23H2 boots faster , keeps my software intact , it just feels much better then this buggy/tricky 24H2 !
Will stay on 23H2 , maybe next year will try again............

The entire 24h2 upgrade has been a fiasco IMO. The OS was rushed and not ready for prime time. Simple as that.
one reason why i havent installed it yet or gotten it yet, don't want anymore problems so i am not upgrading yet

Honestly at this point if you choose to force install, before it being offered in WU, then you should consider yourself a beta tester. I'm sure MS would love to get more data on any machines that aren't playing nicely. I personally don't need the headaches right now. JMO.

Here's the big secret most people are missing: After Microsoft fired their official beta testers the end users have been filling that position. When you think about it this is a very astute business decision. Today we pay Microsoft for the opportunity to beta test the operating systems that they consistently release prematurely. MS followed the Linux example and that's why we keep getting the distros.

I did beta testing of sorts for Microsoft at one time, when I was working for the IRS (before I got my Doctorate and CPA) to see if the IRS software would work. I still remember the old Beta Tester joke... "...DOS not done until Lotus won't run!...."

A question about the availability of 24H2. Has Microsoft force installed 24H2 onto user's computers? And has anyone had 24H2 force installed onto their computer by MS and had issues?

With my desktop it was offered as an optional upgrade initially and I chose to upgrade after making sure I had a full system backup of 23H2. On my new Asus laptop which is running 23H2, 24H2 has never been offered.

Anyone else having issues with apps being slow to open? UAC is particularly slow compared to what it was before 24H2. I have two machines that recently updated to 24H2. I was able to do a repair install on my desktop machine and resolve the lagginess, but my Dell laptop is still having issues, even after a fresh install.

I agree with glasskuter, this has been a fiasco!

I upgraded my machine from windows 10 straight to windows 11 24h2 and went back to win 10 same day.

cons
chrome laggy
steam laggy.
other stuff laggy..
corel software laggy,

pros
it boots faster and login in faster..

specs
ryzen 5900x
132gb ddr 4 at 3200mhz
nvidia 4070

cant do clean install. it would be a nightmare as machine is used for gaming/workstation. and tons of stuff and different software activations.

I read that microsoft has intergrated Multiplane overlays more into 24h2 and its causing issues with flickering in browsers and steam among other things.
as soon as I saw "intergrated Multiplane overlays more" I was like oh no......
