Laptop update and screen going to sleep

So I'm pretty sure updates stop when the screen goes to sleep but sometimes my laptop needs updates which sometimes take awhile. Even plugged in, the screen will go to sleep eventually. Yes I know how to change the settings so that it never sleeps but thats stupid because I may be away for many hours or days. So what do you do?

We all have Windows 11 and it's never that long to me to wait for an update to complete. You just need to increase your patiences and wait a few minutes.

Maybe someone else will have a better answer. Good luck

set it to never sleep in advanced power options and set a scheduled task to put it to sleep at a specified time, i guess. only other option you have.

You could also just trigger a check for updates manually when you are in front of the system. You can continue to work while it checks for and installs updates.

Related to this: For laptops, this issue has been resolved with Modern Standby. Many new laptops support Modern Standby rather than sleep. Those systems can download and install updates even while in standby. Of course, that won't help on a desktop, but I thought it worth mentioning.

your pc will never turn off the screen, nor sleep if you set it... so if it is, you haven't set it to not do so

Hmmm, one more idea. Sorry for so many posts :-).

I have my systems set to perform backups at 6:00 AM every morning. To do this, I have my BIOS set to power on my machines every morning at 5:55 AM. This works when the system is completely shut down. Once awake, Windows can check for updates. From sleep, you may need to do it differently, maybe use a task scheduler item to wake the system and trigger a search for updates.

According to this article, Windows can wake the system to check for updates while in sleep IF wake timers are allowed. It probably won't do this every day. I think Windows update checks once a day (not 100% sure), so if it checked recently, it may not need to wake the system to check. I also assume this to apply to Win 11.
