Solved Latest Macrium Reflect 8 updates


Since I HAVE recovery partitions, and since RE has always worked for me before, I think I'll try these instructions after the next MR update, including step 6, of course.

The file required to create RE media is WinRE.wim. If you have a recovery partition and the recovery environment is enabled, then that's where it will be. If you want to delete the recovery partition (as some like to do to gain extra space) then you should disable the recovery environment first. This moves the WinRE.wim into C:\Windows\System32\Recovery where it is stored should you wish to re-enable the recovery environment.

The Rescue Media Builder searches both locations looking for WinRE.wim, so if you've lost yours by deleting the recovery partition, just put one in C:\Windows\System32\Recovery. If it finds more than one WinRE.wim then it uses the most recent one. If you've lost your WinRE.wim then you can extract a fresh copy from an install.wim or install.esd by opening it as an archive with 7-Zip File Manager.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
You could just point it at any bootable wim file you have. The macrium pebuilder will insert the program files and the winpeshl.ini into the first image of the wim.

You could do it yourself with 7-zip gui.

WinRe pros
Uses less storage space.
Optional - Can backup over wifi.
In my experience, better at picking up required drives.

WinRe Cons
Requires WinRe.wim (interestingly works even if disabled if it is "parked")

WinPE pros
Not many really other than works if no winre.wim.
Can provide better compatibility on older devices.
Sometimes older WinPe versions solve the dreaded low res issue (function of bioses).
Requires a lot more adk downloads.

Overall, I recommend using WinRe.wim, but reverting to WinPe if you get issues.

If you use WinPe, use latest version, but if you run into dreaded low res issue, you may need to use earlier version e.g. WinPE 5.

I would not use earlier than WinPE 5 as there could be some restrictions e.g. network handling.

    Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
Even after erasing everything from USB drive and redoing Rescue partition it still shows deleted directories, wonder where it's picking them up from ? I don't have MR RE partition on disk. It's just annoying as it shows them as error.

How did you do the erase. if you just delete via standard methods only the entry in the disk directory is deleted (that's a sort of "Volume table of contents"). The actual data itself isn't deleted until something updates the data spaces. So the disk directory shows that the space is availble to be used but isn't actually overwritten until that area is needed.

You need IMO to use something like a secure erase program or physically simply force write x'00' in every data area on disk. That should kill any remaining info about data etc.

Deleted partitions with Mini Tool, not a single bit left on it alive. Made single partition formatted in Fat32, made rescue and than in other part new partition in NTFS. Must be something left in MR or system.

And apparently looks like Macrium is updating the free version to 8.0.7783. However when attempting to download you get an HTTP error - 403. You can download the latest version with the offline downloader.

Have you tried the instructions from Macrium I posted in #781 above? I think if you format the stick as FAT32, insert it, and then open MR and go to the Create Rescue Media panel and check the top panel for the "OK," and then use the Ctrl + Build-button (with the stick inserted and the blue highlight ON the blue stick in that panel, not on the top or bottom choices), it'll work. Takes a short while. Then I just close MR, Restart, and use the Boot Menu key for my PC (F12, in my case) and pick the UEFI option for my stick. It does work, when lots of other tries have failed.

I'm not talking about an external drive. I like to make my laptop capable of booting into MR's RE from the Windows boot menu . It's worked for a year and only failed about three updates ago. Macrium support asks mebtobtry different PE versions which is pretty annoying as PE 10 works fine and I told them I only have a problem booting into RE.

If, in fact, you don't see this:

you need to click Advanced and select the Choose Base WIM tab and select RE and click OK. Then MR will do its thing and you'll have a new boot menu that'll let you boot from the Windows RE.

Thanks. I know how to do the updates of the boot menu. It is already RE and I do not need to go through the advanced tab. The boot menu updates very quickly.

I've done this many times before without a problem.
