I have been using Macrium Reflect Home for over a decade. It is the best backup software available, IMHO. Others may and will differ.

Their Forums are very active, with company reps participating as appropriate. There are some tremendously experienced and knowledgeable users over there. Tech support is also great.

I have never had issues with it. The one time my backups failed verification, it was because my backup drive was dying. That was the first indication that I had. Replaced the drive and all was/is well.

Today I followed advice from Bree on Tenforums. He suggested taking a copy of winre.wim AND ReAgent.xml from a Win 10 22H2 ISO and placing them in C:\Windows\System32\Recovery and trying again.
With only Wire.wim my laptop crashed when booting into MR RE, but when I added ReAgent.xml

I douby Macrium Tech Support would ever have figured this out. I'll wait for their next 'update' before I let them off the hook! 😁

Macrium has just thrown in the towel. They can only suggest that I use PE. I can't figure why they did not suggest what @Bree suggested. (copy winre.wim for Windows ISO to C:\Windows\System32\Recovery.)

My recovery partition is ROM. It seems very unlikely that the winre.wim has been corrupted.
Until I put a newer version in C:\Windows\System32\Recovery, there was only one copy on my laptop. Macrium ought to put an up-to-date version in C:\Boot\Macrium to cover this possibility.

Here is the last email from Macrium support.

"After discussing this with the team, they have suggested staying with Windows PE, this is due to the the RE rescue media being local to the host.
If PE is working then the issue is not with the actual rescue media but the win RE base. "

Note that they offer no solution. They don't even mention winre.wim which might have enabled me to 'fix 'it.

The reason why I suggest to use Windows PE is because it's faster to load and seems to have less problems being reported. The downside is that you have quite a big download. But I don't really see that as an issue these days.

The reported Windows RE problems wouldn't be such a problem if Microsoft pushed their Windows RE (winre.wim) updates through more often, but Microsoft rarely push Windows RE updates through to its existing users via Windows Updates. Yes, if you do a clean install or a repair install, you'll get a new Windows RE version. But how often do people do that?

That's why I occasionally update Windows RE manually.

I've installed and reinstalled Windows many times, but winre.wim could not be updated because it is on a read-only 'disk' (possibly eMMC)

That can't be a clean installation of Windows. The Windows installer doesn't report that.
Winre.wim resides in the hidden recovery partition when the Recovery Environment is enabled. If it's disabled, you'll find it in C:\Windows\System32\Recovery.

Not necessarily - winre.wim can also reside in hidden folder C:\Recovery when it is enabled e.g.

1) reagentc /disable to park in system32 folders as you say.

2) delete any recovery partitions

3) reagentc /enable and winre.wim is moved from system32 folders to C:\Recovery

Some people prefer this setup.

I have heard that this configuration is not so suitable for bitlocked C drives as you cannot access winre.wim (need a password or key?) but I have not tested that.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.
