Lenovo Laptop Keeps Reinstalling "HP Smart"??

Hi everyone,

I have a Lenovo E15 laptop. I have uninstalled HP Smart several times but it keeps coming back. I have no HP products and don't know how it's doing this. Can anyone help me get rid of it permanently?

Try the updated tool from MS. Odd because they fixed the issue from memory.

Microsoft Printer Metadata Troubleshooter Tool – January 2024

  • This tool will uninstall the HP Smart application if incorrect metadata was found, there are no HP printers or HP printer drivers installed, and the application was installed after Nov 25th, 2023.

They fixed this a while back.

Update your MS Store > Library > Get updates > Update all, that includes the MS Store itself.

Then Right click the HP Smart App and uninstall.

Don't know if it applies but have seen where a device was seen at some point by the computer and later removed but some entries were left behind in the Registry, prompted a read of the Registry showing the device. It took a cleaning of the Registry to remove the entries. Working on one now that previously had an HP monitor connected and is still offering update for it.

@glasskuter I had an HP Compaq L2105 when installing Win10 but later changed to a Dell ST2410 I was given by a widow. Regedit finds nothing about the HP monitor and neither does CCleaner. The issue does not exist on Win11 or Win7 or Linux Mint which also are connected via a KVM.

I do have an HP Printer and don't even use HP Smart because it is not needed. However, every time I uninstall it, it keeps coming back. I simply ignore it until I get around to uninstalling it again.

HP must be paying Microsoft to keep pushing it out during regular updates.

The major manufacturers of printers are all going to an app and trying to wean customers from using old software packages to manage their printers. Very few of the newer printers, especially the low-end ones, have full software packages on their support site anymore. Their install instructions direct the user to install their app from the MS store. Just recently I've installed a couple of cheap HP printers for little old ladies and both required an app. One was HP, the other Canon.

I just checked and found that the cheapest HP printers I could find for sale had offline installation software from the HP website. They also had HP Smart as the recommended install software.

For these new printers did you go to support site and see if there was an offline installer?

The offline installer for my HP printer installed HP Smart and put an icon on my desktop. The icon launched the HP Printer Assistant is what I use. HP Smart is not even required so I uninstalled it.

BTW, one of the reasons I dislike HP Smart is that it tries to get you to buy an HP ink subscription. Since HP makes most of it money from selling ink that makes sense.

This started happening last year and all I know about it is that it was addressed.
Then they made available the fix (KB5034510)

In a statement to Windows Latest, Microsoft confirmed it was aware of the reports.
