Let's install Windows 11 on incompatible hardware

For Default Apps, yes, I have seen that if you select an application you can then set each supported extension to open with that, but this is not convenient with apps that support a lot of different file formats, such as VLC that supports tons of video and audio formats.

The quickest way might be found in VLC options. Perhaps it has an option to "Make VLC the default media player for all media files" and then it does all the work for you.

If not, try reinstalling it. That option might form part of the installation steps.

Hi folks

Using a Virtual machine with TPM emulation I´m getting updates on the RS DEV review channel OK . New expiry date is now well into 2022. Update via bog standard WU.

My query is that if this is an "Evaluation Copy" - why should it require activation - or surely it should have a built in activation until expiry. The whole point about these builds is surely people TEST them -- not run them as robust "Production Machines" -- and if the product is not activated it gets hobbled in all sorts of ways making proper testing rather a joke.

You can for example download an evaluation FREE copy of Windows 2022 SERVER 180 day evaluation (great to play with if you want to learn a bit about Windows Servers) which is automatically activated for your trial period.

Jimbo,

It's one of the current requirements for acceptance into the Windows Insider program. Get started with the Windows Insider Program

"
  • To install Windows Insider Preview Builds, you must be running a licensed version of Windows on your device. You can install Windows here if your device is currently running an older version or if you need to buy Windows. If you're having issues installing Windows, you can also download a Windows Insider Preview ISO to get started.
"
When the Windows 10 Insider program first started, MS used to issue time limited Activation Codes and didn't require users to replace their existing system(s), meaning it was very easy to set up and activate VMs for an indefinite period, but they dropped that method towards the end of the first year (if I remember correctly), probably due to the limited control that system provided, i.e. it possibly (probably?) resulted in many 'free' copies of Windows 10 being used without the purchase a license, as Insiders could set up as many Test devices as they wanted using the same Activation Code. They then moved to requiring Activation of a licensed version of Windows 7 (at the time).

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Yep, not disgreeing and that one KB5005635 was first available 16 September for those on the test builds.
From what I could see that was applied automatically (at the first opportunity) after anyone did the RTM upgrade when it was officially released.
Like most users that can not upgrade officially, time will tell how things pan out, and the first hump will be Tuesday the 12th :)

Yep - no need for any regedits to run W11 on unsupported software.

You can even go one stage further and clone vhd to host pc if desired.

  • To install Windows Insider Preview Builds, you must be running a licensed version of Windows on your device. You can install Windows here if your device is currently running an older version or if you need to buy Windows. If you're having issues installing Windows, you can also download a Windows Insider Preview ISO to get started.

However this seems to go against the EULA where you are only allowed to use 1 licensed copy of Windows -- I really don't want to run a "Dev / Pre-release" testing build as a "Production type" machine - and I'm sure the program is not intended for that purpose. OK the previous Windows activations stay OK but Ms is breaking its own rules here from what I can see. I have no problems running this and a standard Windows machine - both activated apparently with the same digital license.

OK a bit "Lawyers speak" and I'm sure all of us sometimes break the rules a bit (or loosely interpret them) but for a major international company it should be clear on its policies.

Cheers

How to modify the installation (ISO) of Windows 11 so that it can be installed on any PC.

Create a "ISO_Files" folder in "C" and copy the ISO windows 11 scope into it.
Then load ISO windows 10 and all the files (but not "install.esd"!) In the sources files (files, not folders!), Copy them to the sources folder in the ISO_Files folder and have them overwritten.
Then download the oscdimg.exe file

and insert it into the system32.

Now open cmd as an administrator and paste this command there:

oscdimg -m -o -u2 -udfver102 -bootdata: 2 # p0, e, b "c: \ ISO_Files \ boot \ etfsboot.com" # pEF, e, b "c: \ ISO_Files \ efi \ microsoft \ boot \ efisys .bin "" c: \ ISO_Files "" c: \ Win11.iso "

Win11.iso - change the name as you want.

In C, you will create a modified ISO windows 11.

Done install where you want.

MediaCreationTool21H1.exe and MediaCreationTool W11.exe used

I installed cool Windows 11 on this weak pc:

Mainboard G41M-P26 (MS-7592)
NVIDIA GeForce 210
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
DDR3 2048 MB

Updates are being downloaded.

I was a Window Insider in the Beta Group with Windows 10. My Laptop did not meet the criterion for in stalling Windows 11 because of the Laptop CPU. My Laptop is ASUS AMD A12-9720P RADEON R7, 12 COMPUTE CORES 4C+8G.
About 5 weeks back I got an upgrade from Windows Insider and when I upgraded my Laptop, MicroSoft installed Windows 11 21H2 (OS Build: 22000.194). Now I am unable to get the latest Windows 11 released on 4th October to upgrade my Laptop and when I open the Windows Insider web-page I am informed that my Laptop does not qualify for installing Windows 11 that MicroSoft had itself installed a few weeks back when I was a Windows 10 Insider. It seems that MicroSoft doesn't believe in playing a fair game.
