Solved LG 32GR93U problems - returned to shop

I bought a new LG 32GR93U last week, my first ever 144Hz screen. It is very nice BUT I've had to return it to Currys and got a full refund.

For the week I had it, I was struggling to get anything over 60FPS without major stuttering on many games, mainly Forza Horizon 5 but others as well. Even if I locked the frame rate to 72 the game would stutter, seemed to be more so when I was driving around bends etc (when the screen was scrolling left-right). Nothing I did in the driver or game settings fixed anything. I initially put it down to my GPU and CPU being pushed hard but 72FPS should never be a problem. Using a 3080 Ti and 5900X CPU with 64GB of RAM.

The decision to return it came this morning, when I was just scrolling through newsfeeds/social media pages and I was getting frame tearing - like the G-sync/V-Sync wasn't able to keep the screen in sync. it looked awful and not what I expected from a £579 monitor. Again I fiddled with the NVCP settings but nothing fixed it. It would be ok for a minute or so then lose sync and the tearing started.

I feel a bit upset and frustrated, this monitor has had good reviews and the opinion is very high from what I've seen.
I didn't know what to expect from a high frame rate monitor but certainly didn't bank on frame tearing when scrolling a web page. Even setting the monitor's refresh rate to 60 still had the problem.

I won't know if the problems were due to my other hardware or the monitor itself, until I get another 144Hz monitor at some point.

Frustrating when all you want to do is purchase it, plug it in and get into it. I’d be disappointed also.

Absolutely. I got fed up with messing with the NVCP and game settings trying to get it to not be a stutter fest. I know FH5 has some optimisation problems but I was seeing it on every game. The icing on the cake was the screen tearing when scrolling Edge browser this morning.
Luckily in the UK we have a 14-day cooling-off period for online sales, that's even if the goods aren't faulty/not functioning properly,

What are the chances it was a bad make for that particular monitor? You said you did your homework so you never know. Fault on the process line? Bad chip?

Who knows, I didn't get a replacement to find out. I did a lot of research before buying a new 4k, these LGs haven't been out that long and they stood out as being rather good with all the right features.

It’s a decent amout of money to lay out for a monitor. In my head, before I have even checked, it’s a thousand dollars AU if you’re talking Pounds or even USD. I’d expect it to get up and do my dishes for that price.

Bit late now that you have returned it, however if you buy another you will likely have the same problems.
Probably down to the detailed specs of your hardware, likely Graphics Card, along with a learning curve.

LG 32GR93U DisplayPort 1.4 (DSC) and HDMI 2.1

The specs of your MSI Suprim X 3080 Ti:
DisplayPort 1.4a
HDMI 2.1 supports 4K@120 Hz. That is a bit less than you require.

I think you would have been better off using DisplayPort with that Graphics Card.

For experimentation (HDMI) you could have changed the Graphics Card output to say 2560 x 1440 or 1920 x 1080 at maybe 120 Hz or 100 Hz refresh rate, within the ratings. Won't look so good but may indicate the limitation.
Or used DisplayPort with that Graphics Card assuming it meets the standards which the HDMI 2.1 does not.

The "driver" as such will only be a colour profile and specs which are in the EDID from the monitor anyway. Hard to find from LG, though that may have been auto downloaded, only really of interest for people requiring colour accuracy.

I actually tried both DP and HDMI cables with the same results, and I also set the refresh rate to 120 on HDMI.
I also had problems at a lower resolution, and was getting the screen tearing on Edge even with a refresh rate of 60Hz. I first noticed it this morning with the refresh rate of 120Hz, that's what swayed my decision to return it. Too much hassle and expense to deal with problems like that.


Using DP the options were 144/95/60Hz, even at 95 (the maximum without DSC) I was struggling to get stutter-free gaming.

Please let us know how you make out if/when you get another high refresh rate monitor.

If I had to bet, it'd be that you will continue to have issues with another make/model. I'd be pleased to be mistaken.

Will do. Currently not in the market for one, I'm hoping that Asus get their act together regarding the RMA on my VG289Q. I have seen a £250 MSI 60Hz 4K monitor which looks quite good, and apparently has a true 10-bit panel. I'm considering this one as a stop-gap until future PC upgrades (GPU, CPU) as it's a good price, it depends how long Asus are with the repair.

I've seen videos on YouTube of FH5 running at Ultra with good frame rates on the same type of GPU as mine, which also added to the disappointment that mine was having these problems. Even on High and Medium settings I was getting problems,

In the UK we get a 14-day return window for buyers to test/examine and check suitability of products. I couldn't risk keeping it until I got new kit in the hope it would be better, it was a 'return now or be stuck with it' situation. So sadly it went back today.


I know where I am with 60Hz, and it's never been an issue with my other hardware!

Is a 3080 ti adequate to run Forza Horizon 5 at high resolution? I see a recommendation on Steam for a GTX 1070 or better, but with no stated resolution or frame rate. (To state the obvious, a 3080 ti is a lot better than a 1070. It's almost a 3090, but with a mere 12GB of VRAM.)

I've been running it at 60FPS Extreme 4k since release

Marked as Solved, as the monitor is no longer in my possession. I do know that driving 4K at high frame rates is VERY difficult to achieve but I was so disappointed that I wasn't able to make good use of the LG monitor because it's a lovely bit of kit. Learning curve I guess. Still doesn't explain why I was getting screen tearing at all framerates when browsing Edge

My 60Hz Asus is being replaced, so I'll be back in 4K soon hopefully. If I needed a 4K screen again tomorrow I'd go for another 60FPS model. MSI have a nice one
