Solved Local account login options

I have created a local account on my PC (my main account is an MS one) for a test. The logon screen gives me two options ,Email & Password or Username & PIN when what I need is username and password - thoughts anyone?

To get this done, you must run the Command Prompt as an Administrator.

Step 1: Open Command Prompt as Administrator

Press the Windows Key.

Type cmd.

Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.

Step 2: Create the User Account

The basic syntax for creating a new user with a password is:

While logged into your MS account under "other users" select the local account. If it is assigned as "standard user", change it to administrator

While logged into your local account go to settings>accounts>signin options>
Under Password - make sure a password is assigned to the account if it already does not have one
Under PIN(Windows Hello) remove this sign-in option

While on that same page, under "additional settings" you can also select whether or not you want to have to enter a password when computer wakes from sleep. under (If you've been away when should Windows require you to sign in again)

That should get the local user signing in with a PW without getting PIN prompts.

Then If you then want the local user account to be a standard account instead of administrator, while logged into MS account you can change it back to a standard user.

@FreeBooter I have aleady created the local user, that isn't the issue, but thanks for the reply.
@glasskuter you say "when logged into your local account" but that is the problem, there is no way to log in to the local acount since only 'username/PIN'or "email/password' prompts appear when the local user needs 'username/password'

You can enable Interactive logon: Don't display last signed-in below to require sign in with both a user name and password.

The command i have post is for creating user a password not for creating user account.

@Brink Thanks for the tutorial just what was needed I thought, however I enabled the Interactive logon: Don't display last signed-in as advised, but
having done so, when I restart I get my usual lock screen minus any prompts and minus the fingerprint icon (as expected). When I hit return I get the email/password combination of boxes and when I click 'sign in options' I get the Username/PIN combination. No username/password option.

Double check to turn off Use my sign-in info to automatically finish setting up after an update to see if that's the issue for when you restart the computer.

That setting was also turned off. When I restart the PC I first see the lock screen with no input boxes and just the fingerprint icon at the top. If I hit return then I see my profile image, email address and the fingerprint icon, with my username/photo and 'other user' at bottom left. If I click the 'other user link I get a photo placeholder, the words 'Other user' and two input boxes 'Email Address' and 'Password'. There is a 'sign in options' link and if I click that I get 'Username' and 'PIN' input fields - no username/password option. Also noted that after going through these steps, when I logged in normally - fingerprint biometrics - the "For improved security, only allow Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts on this device" setting was turned on.

In that case, double check this below to see if returns the check box. You also need to be signed in as an administrator.

If you turned on For improved security, only allow Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts on this device (aka: passwordless sign-in), you will not see the Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer check box until you turn off For improved security, only allow Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts on this device.

If your PC is currently joined to a domain, then the Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer. box will not be available.

OK, thanks for sticking with this - If I turn the passwordless sign in setting to OFF and then restart and login, the setting returns to ON. Changing the setting without restarting doesn't affect the netplwiz options. The machine is not domain joined.

Interesting that it automatically turns back on like that.

Double check the registry setting for this like in option two below to make sure it's getting changed.

Changing the setting in Windows is having no effect it seems. The registry settings match those which would be set by your registry script to set Passwordless to OFF, regardless of the Windows setting

Go ahead and post what you see on the sign in screen to see if anything may stand out. Be sure to blank out anything personal like your email address first.
