Log-in screen always reverts to PIN

Hi all,
New install of Win 11 Home, upgraded over an OEM install of Win 10 Home which was supplied with this new HP Omen 30L destop computer. Nothing else was installed before the upgrade.

After installing, I created a local account instead of my Microsoft account to log in with, I added a password in addition to my PIN, but every time I restart the computer, the log-in screen reverts to PIN and I have to click first the Sign-in options link and then the key button to be able to input my password. Isn't is supposed to remember that I used the password the last time and show me that first without having to do these two clicks?

I do have the lock screen disabled (via registry hack) as I have no use for it, but this was happening before I did that.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here, but I believe a pin takes preference over a password. Since you have both set up on your local account, it will always ask for pin first. If you specifically want to enter your password each time, disable the pin.
  1. Press Win key+I to open settings and click on the Accounts section.
  2. Select Sign-in options, and click on the PIN (Windows Hello)
  3. Click on the Remove button.

OK, thanks - I was afraid of that. I would like to keep both the PIN and the password. For example I have both on my Windows 10 laptop and it does remember which I used last, so this policy has changed for Windows 11...

TBH, I thought it worked this way in Windows 10 as well - pin takes precedence. It did for me.

It did for me.

I just now tested it with my laptop again to make sure my memory was correct. It was set to PIN at startup, I changed it to password at the log-in screen and logged in with my password, let it boot, then did a restart. The log-in screen came up asking me for a password, not a PIN.

What your Desktop computer is doing is expected behaviour. It is your laptop that is behaving strange.

Pin is the easier option as well as more secure. That's because pin is limited to the device, and not the account. If you don't want to use pin, why did you set it up?
