Losing SSD space

Windows 11 Pro; 21H2, Build 22000.1281
SSD loses about 6gb of space and using restore point recovers the space, but then it gets lost again. I have run SFC /scannow and check.

Use app like Treesize Free to work out where the space is being used. 6GB is not that much and could be temporary files, restore points etc.

Thanks for reminding me of Treesize, I have forgotten about it. It was pagefile.sys that caused the issue which explains why the restore point was working.

You can also manually set the page file size by choosing Custom Size, and setting the minimum and maximum size to the same number... like maybe 4096 or 8192 MB. (4GB or 8GB)

I did set it to the recommended min/max size as recommended.

I recommend keeping pagefile.sys intact and let Windows manage it automatically...if you do manual adjustments, sooner or later you will run into trouble...

I'd also recommend leaving it alone. Sometimes you won't need as much pagefile space and if you set it manually, you will always be out that space. Other times you may need more, and hamper your performance if you limit it.

Windows is well designed to increase and decrease that file as needed.

LOL - I ran a forum (tweakxp.com / tweaks.com) years ago where we had virtual fist fights over page file sizing and settings. Bottom line, do whatever you want, but there's no reason not to let Windows manage it.

More important, I suggest we let him run treesize and see where the issue is rather than start a 2 page discussion of the pagefile ;-). It could be he has hibernate enabled, it could be malware, it could be temp files, it could be restore points, it could be the pagefile, or it could be any number of other things. Rather than confuse the OP, I humbly suggest we wait to hear from him.

Op has already confirmed it is the pagefile on post #3.

Regarding pagefiles, my view is to leave it on auto unless there is a compellng reason to do otherwise.

I have 16GB physical RAM, and have my pagefile's min and max set to 3072.
Haven't had any problems.


@allan I "still" have tweakXP.com bookmarked. That was an excellent site. :-)
