Solved M.2 SSD queries?

1. Your machine would be supporting PCI Gen 4 M2. NVMe SSD.
2. Slot 1 can hold BOTH 2230 and 2280, and slot 2 only 2230. So can a RAID be created. The M.2 2230 NVme SSD is installed on slot 2, should I try swaping tinto slot #1?
3. Correct, I got the drive and laptop brand new from Dell.

How do I get hold of this Micron sales (Best buy, Walmart, Comp USA)……I want to get a couple 1 TB each of 2230 and 2280.

Are they TLC drives?

They are QLC drives according to the article.

1. Irrelevant. The same can be done with PCIe gen 3 drives, if you figure out which slot is the optimal one (admittedly, after figuring out *if* there is a more optimal slot). My system specifically assigns which is the 'primary' drive, and based upon the architecture, it's also the slightly faster slot. Dell may have done the same with the CPU and chipset on that laptop, I don't know - I'd have to do a lot more research on it to know more, but I have an Latitude E5470, and it too has a pair of M.2 slots, one of which is 2230 and one which can do anything from 2230 to 2280. The 2230 slot is under the back cover, and gets much less airflow than the 2280 slot, but the 2280 slot is shared with a standard SATA port, so I can have either a standard SATA SSD or else an NVMe M.2 SSD, but not both (as they would physically be in each other's way).

If you're planning on having dual drives, it probably will not matter, but if both are 2230s, then the system drive being in the more 'open' air will definitely benefit from the heat dissipation ability.

2. It depends on the slot layout inside the laptop, but wherever it can get better airflow would be beneficial to it overall.

Also, you might want to consider forcing your fans speeds to ramp u p a bit more to provide better cooling overall to the system boards, and also check to see if the laptop might need some system cleaning. Laptops are notorious for having adequate (but not superb) cooling, and the air inlets are easily clogged with dust, which will degrade system performance all around.

3. Cool, good to know. It helps being able to eliminate any previous tech / enthusiast having played around / having used the drive and / or system.

Which may not matter at all in your current system, if the M.2 slots are unable to go above what you're getting now.

I highly suggest that you do a lot more research on this, on the drives you want, on the machine you have and on what you actually need in terms of storage and storage space. We're just doing Google searches to get most of the answers that we've provided thus far, but it's your machine, and you really need to know the details yourself. 2230 sized PCIe gen 4 drives are not cheap, and if you go in expecting something unrealistic, you may end up being very disappointed.

TLC's usually offer better performance and lifespan, however QLC offers higher capacity and costs less. It all depends upon how you use them, for example if you are storing pictures, movies, games, files, etc.....where you are doing more read-heavy workloads, a QLC drive here can be advantageous as you get more disk space for a lower cost and the reduction in endurance isn't an issue as you aren't writing to it constantly.

If you are in need of performance, endurance and reliability, and you can live with the lower capacities and higher costs, the TLC's are your better choice.

Finances aren't an issue, but I don't want my laptop running hot.
Plus earlier an experienced member suggested to go for them here at the forums, would maybe help now and in any future laptop buys?

How would I know which slot is under the base and which close away close to air?

Does the Youtube help? I plan to take it to the local tech and have the base opened and do 2 things..1. eject and insert and the 2230 in slot #1 and see for speeds and temp, and insert a 1 TB and check for speeds.

I have lots of admiration for Micron, been a decade running smooth (SSD) on my ancient Dell XPS laptop (W10), still none issues.

Is my present m2 2230 TLC?

Why is the health down by 4% to 96% and temp goes into Red, despite cold temperature and laptop on a elevated 1 feet high stand.....using as a desktop?

you might benefit from a heatsink for the nvme if it will fit.

apparently there is about 6tb written, what is the rated tbw of that disk? Ther is a consumer kioxia that has 400tbw for the 1tb and 200tbw for the 500gb.

I believe they exist , a thin sticky pad with a thin bit of copper on top. Think they are 5 or 6 quid , but I dont know what effect they have.
