Macrium reflect error after Windows update

After the Windows 11 version 22H2 release update reboot my system drive had a hard error and I allowed it to go into recovery. The error appeared to be from Macrium regarding the MFT table. No errors were reported in the windows reliability after the reboot and SFC found no issues. Everything about windows and my normal applications seems fine except Macrium Reflect.

After the disk “repair” Macrium Reflect is now showing an XML file validation error regarding partition 5. Samsung Magician does not show a 5th partition, but my last full backup does.

Could a windows installation ‘clean up’ an unnecessary windows update partition? My Samsung over partitioning is larger than it should be, but I don’t know if that is a new issue or related to the missing partition. Not sure if I have a bigger problem with an empty partition being removed or just need to rebuild my Macrium Reflect XML to the current disk set up. Any insight or suggestions for further troubleshooting would be welcome.
Thanks,
Tom

Turn the over partitioning... OFF.
IMO, over partitioning is just marketing BS.
I would remove Samsung Magician as well.
You can always install it if needed to check your firmware version. That's all it's really good for.

Uninstall and reinstall Macrium.

Then when everything is working again.... including Macrium... make a fresh backup.

The combination of Samsung Magician, Macrium Reflect and the 22H2 update.... just messed things up for Macrium.

You can always use the portable (no install required) Crystal Disk Info to check your SSDs or HDDs.
You can even benchmark your SSDs or HDDs with Crystal Disk Mark, also portable.

@tnnlynch

An In-Place upgrade will fix Windows problems, but not Macrium problems.
Another option besides the one I posted above would be...

Restore the computer to before the 22H2 upgrade.
Remove Samsung Magician (disable Over Provisioning first).
Then try an In-Place upgrade to 22H2 again.

I kept this system fairly simple with only one windows version installed. All new components and fairly stable after I eliminated the Asus crate software. I don't really do much with the Magician software other setting the OP originally and on occasional firmware check. Definitely value Macrium Reflect working more than Magician.

I am running 6979 so I will look into that too.

Thanks for the replies,
Tom

Samsung Magician has "real-time" components. I think that's probably what messed things up.

If you have a fresh backup from before 22H2... restore to that, remove Samsung Magician,
then do an In-Place upgrade to 22H2 again.

Yeah, I noticed it has quite a few processes running when I was poking around this morning. Need to finish a few things for Monday morning then I will head down the restore, remove OP & magician, update again path. I will update this thread after that.

Samsung Magician didn't cause any issues on my desktop when I upgraded last week to 22H2. Macrium Reflect has also run the daily differential without issues since the upgrade.

My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 4GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Beta as native boot vhdx.

My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 4GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus the Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds as a native boot .vhdx.
As expected, no issues with windows updates after the restore to previous state. All 5 partitions remained and no disk errors were encountered. Changes do include both running the older version of Macrium Reflect (8.0.6635) and removal of Samsung Magician.

My original over provisioning setting was 10% but changed to 20%. From my backups this happened two months ago - I just didn't notice it the time. Clearing the OP only removed one 10% block and left the original 10% as OP unallocated space. It appears I cannot remove that without a reformat. A task for a later date.

Macrium Reflect Build 6979 has bugs.
I'm using Macrium Reflect Home - v8.0.6979 [UEFI] paid and, so far, I've not had any indication of bugs. Can you be more specific with bugs you've found or links?

Macrium Reflect Build 6979 has bugs.
Well, just about every version of everything has bugs.

Be specific - there are no serious reports of bugs on the Macrium forum.

Either that or stop spreading FUD.
