Macrium Reflect Rescue Media Issue (WinRE or WinPE ADK 11/10)

Just a thought, have you checked that the WinRE partition is enabled/ specified as the current one for Windows to use? It probably is, but worth checking.

My Windows install was an upgrade from version 10 Pro. I was under the impression that you only got the WinRE partition if you performed a clean install of Windows 10 onto an empty disk with no existing partitions, then Windows Setup would create and configure a WinRE partition for you automatically. I thought I'd seen that if you had a pre-partitioned drive with left-over formatting from some previous installation then the auto-creation didn't happen so then WinRE is not specific to "editions" such as Home, Pro, and Enterprise but rather it's just an environment that contains tools that can help recover normal Windows from an unbootable state, such as System Restore, Startup Repair, Windows Update uninstaller, Command Prompt, etc. If that's wrong, either way, I do not have a WinRE partition.

Edited to include ... I do have a WinRE folder in the C:\Recovery folder

So I've been working in my main profile (which has administrator rights) this whole time including the clean-boots. When I dropped back to the "full" Administrator profile and did a clean boot I was able to successfully create the boot menu option for Reflect. After a reboot I was able to successfully boot into the Reflect WinRE environment. Woop woop. Now back to the issue of Macrium Reflect Media Builder program ... it's still a no go with the normal programs I have starting and running in the background. Looks like I'll be disabling and rebooting a whole bunch till I find the culprit!

It appears the culprit is Bitdefender ActiveShield. Must have been something in a relatively recent AV update cause this wasn’t an issue a few months ago.

Things like that have often happened with Anti-Virus programs. A new definitions update breaks something or blocks something safe. Notify Bitdefender of the issue.

Agreed. Though in theory VSS can backup while just about anything is running if the disk becomes too busy it can overwhelm VSS and cause errors too.

Just to make sure I don't have issues I disable real-time protection of Windows Defender and exit out of Malwarebytes. Then after the backup completes, I re-enable them or simply restart the computer.

I'll be contacting Bitdefender support to see if they can advise of settings that will allow both programs to safely co-exist.

Thanks everyone for your time, help and assistance.

Did you install Malwarebytes after Bitdefender? The installation of Bitdefender requires the removal of MWB during the installation process

I do not have Malwarebytes installed on my computer. I use the built-in malware protection from Bitdefender.

Hi there
1) Are you on Macrium V8
2) when selecting the appropriate PE did you choose the correct version from the drop down for your Windows build.

try all of them from the drop down -- there are about 3 - 4 versions to choose from. Usually the W10 versions are the most compatable even for restoring / backing up W11 systems.

Another solution :

For genuine stand alone boot for "bare metal restore" I've found the best way is to create a tiny Windows base system on an external vhds physical file (Windows PE) -- to create that use dism /apply-image -- but remember in this case the image directory is simply boot.wim rather than the standard install.wim. Now you can make a bootable Macrium which will run from that external device, plus WINPE plus any other versions of Windows which will have your hardware drivers etc. Use external SSD connected to USB3 via SATA->USB connector.

Remember to install the bootloader : cd xxx:/windows/system32
bcdboot /w:/windows /s S: /f UEFI where S is the 100MB EFI partition ON THE EXTERNAL DEVICE !!!!

Cheers
jimbo

Good morning jimbo

Yes, using v8 Workstation & I tried WinRE and every iteration of WADK possible, nothing worked. And I guess that makes sense with what the cause finally turned out to be.

I've got lots more to learn about.
