Solved Maybe this will help you decide victor in Acronis/Macrium debate

Hi Steve17, yes the WD version has cyber protect but does not have the scheduling options. You can disable cyber protect if you wish.
I just uninstall True Image (by using the CleanupTool.exe) each time after I have used the Bootable Media Builder option in True Image to build my copy of the AcronisBootablePEMedia.iso file. I then put this file onto my USB flash drive that has already been formatted with Ventoy. I also put the Windows Installation ISO on it, that I can download directly onto it without needing to use the MCT.

I had a good laugh when I saw that some people on here make it look like they are experienced users, like, they have gained the guru status with medals and stars on Tenforums, yet, they still don't seem to know that it is possible to press Shift+F10 to reach the command prompt─both at the language selection menu screen of the Windows Installation ISO and in the main menu screen of the Acronis Bootable Media ISO (WinRE/WinPE). Macrium is for these people and all their followers that belong to them. The rest of us are the small minority of advanced users who know how to use Acronis without running into any problems like this. :)

I never needed any bootable stuff to repair anything. I have at least 2 bootable disks and I have at least 2 partitions on each disk that contain a Windows OS. So the only thing that would prevent my computer from booting up is a direct hit from an ICBM.:)

At least that was the way it was with my old non SecureBoot computers. It seems it still works with my SecureBoot computer. As long as I can make backups and restores and clone OS partitions, I should be okay.

I just wanted to add one note to that. If you uninstall Acronis with the tool and want to install lets say Macrium for instance after, Macrium won't install. I haven't investigated the reason nor the solution. This was with Win 10 and I suspect the same thing with Win 11.

Yes, now I remember why I'm using Macrium. The ancient but simple WD Acronis wouldn't uninstall completely, and neither would the newer WD Acronis Cyber uninstall completely.

Zardoc, Steve,

Thanks for those warnings.

I'll no doubt need to uninstall Seagate DiscWizard one day so I might need to combine that with the Windows clean install I've been putting off for years.

The only time I've uninstalled AcronisTI WD Edition was when, following an SSD replacement, I immediately followed it up with Seagate DiscWizard installation. So whatever files or services were causing your problems were probably overwritten with new copies.

Happy New Year,
Denis

I had the Acronis WD Edition on Windows 10. Even with the tool, and/or Revo... I couldn't completely remove it.
And... since the earliest backup I had made on Win 10... had Acronis installed... I has to reinstall Win 10 to completely remove it.

I had no troubles on Win 7 with Acronis 2010, but from Acronis 2016 onward... Acronis got weird whenever I tried to remove it.

I only run the Cleanup tool as an added precaution, only after I have already uninstalled True Image by following the normal uninstallation steps. The normal uninstallation procedure has never failed me, though, so running the Cleanup tool should not even have been necessary for me. But it doesn't seem like it can hurt to run it anyway just in case, after the normal uninstallation procedure went successful. Maybe the problem that you describe was caused by incorrect usage of the Cleanup tool? The correct usage of the Cleanup tool is explained in this article:

Not so very long ago I have verified that none of the registry entries outlined in the article were present on the system during the cleanup procedure. This was on two different computers (one laptop with an Intel i5-7200U, one desktop with an Intel i5-10400), both of which were running on Windows 10 20H1 at the time when I did this. On my current laptop with Windows 11 there seem to be no leftovers from Acronis either. All traces of it appear to be gone, no matter where I try to search for them, and, the free version of Macrium Reflect installs just fine.

Further, I have said this before, and I will keep saying it... I don't actually recommend using the installable version of True Image, aside from only using it for creating the Bootable Media ISO. But the same also applies to Macrium Reflect. And, no, the reason for this is not just because I think there's too much bloat going on. There is, but the main important reason why I don't recommend anything other than the bootable ISO is that a live snaphot taken from an actively running Windows installation isn't necessarily always going to be equally as reliable as a cold image, due to the complex nature of various processes that you may have running in the background during creation of the snapshot.

Also, I already know that the vast majority of users won't run into any trouble with live snapshots, and, I also get that being able to avoid booting from a USB flash drive is desirable, because it is convenient. (Even, if Ventoy is already extremely convenient too, especially if you, like me, own the type of USB flash drive that offers decent performance specs.) I am not in the habit of creating a new image of my Windows installation repeatedly all the time. Doing it only one time after every major update installation is already more than enough.

For me, personally, it's just that the integrity of the newly created image of my Windows installation takes absolute precedence because the risk is small, but the consequence may potentially be rather huge, due to the very long time it takes to start completely from scratch. Also for me, the whole purpose of having an image available is to be able to depend on it as a last resort when nothing else works except doing a clean install and starting completely from scratch. So, snapshots are not for me. I know that I can trust the bootable ISO of Acronis with the Verify image checkbox checked, but taking a live snaphot with either Acronis or Macrium? When it is relatively easy to avoid and the method that lets me avoid it actually only takes a few extra minutes of downtime if using an SSD so the time it takes typically will be kind of similar to when Windows Update finalizes the install of a major update?

@hdmi BTW, I wanted to add very interesting your reflection on cold backup versus hot backup. Very logical. I, also like you have one image that counts. The one done on clean install. I have a gold Win 10 and I update it with DISM if I need a clean install with latest updates. I don't want all that work to go to waste with a corrupt image after the fact.

But unlike you, I do it on the run (HOT). Acronis has never caused me any issues using it on the go and on the system but I'm glad you shared that option. I will keep it in mind.

I have a friend that has the latest Predator Helios and TI is giving him a pain. Didn't have time to look at the option you suggest. Will do that.

Computer technology is evolving very fast. What we learned yesterday is sometimes outdated tomorrow or we just forget as we get older (well in my case luckily I keep some notes.)

There's a saying in French Canada (Only fools never change their minds)

@hdmi @Zardoc

Well cold backup is fine, but ppl are lazy, forgetting things etc.. so its not sustainable ...

Thats why one has to count on hot and automated/scheduled backup solution .. am I wrong?

Also @hdmi why do you think that Macrium is kiddish tool?

One more think .. i was wondering to automate Macrium for image, with restic backup for files... any idea on that?

Forget all this B/S.

Either "Cough up and pay" or go for FREE GPARTED.,

I can't believe there's so much noise in this Forum on this topic -- If companies change Free Software to "Subscription" or Paid versions then why not simply vote with your feet if you don't like the model or pay up if you are happy with the idea.

I LOATHE monthly subscriptions -- I even get a discount (quite large > 9% in fact) on negotiating a 1 time annual bill on both ISP contract (internet) and Energy company. Also on Amazon you can pay an annual subscription - avoiding all the B/S mid contract hikes etc,

On Mobile phone I have a Pay as you Go SIM card - cheaper by far these days in countries with decent Internet-- I understand for many paying smaller monthly amounts is probably simpler but if you have the money arrange a 1 year 1 off payment -- most companies won't refuse and you avoid those B/S things like CPI + 3.7% increase too ( in Eurozone and UK amounts to like a wallet busting 15% hike !!!) !!! and you'll get a discount too.

Seems over money / sensible management of personal finances -- The CHAV's Rule.-- Really a shame as consumers should be king (or queen if you prefer). !!

Cheers

I just stated on previous post this was an old thread, and you perpetutate it with a reply that is not relevant.

Users are quite capable of making their own minds on how they pay for things.

Contracts vary widely in different countries e.g. I do not know of a single UK supplier that will accommodate a 1 off payment for a year!

Mods - please close this thread down!

I use Acronis True Image 2021 version since it was put out in 2021. I saw no need to upgrade it. I use it every time I make a major change or update or addition to my laptop and it has never failed to make a good backup. I do restores more often than I would like to admit, but all those restores were flawless. I see no reason to change to another backup program or change what I am doing now going into the future.

Well this thread is titled "Maybe this will help you decide victor in Acronis/Macrium debate". I see no reason to try Macrium since Acronis works well for me. So the victor in my case is Acronis. Why even try Macrium?

Since you don't like older questions answered, perhaps you can get the Administrator to delete them en masse so that you are not sullied by their being answered.

This is not me being sullied!

The site policy is people should not really reply to posts over 30 days old unless there is a really good reason to do so. The intent is users should start a new thread if they have new queries. It now even gives a warning to that effect. (see below). Otherwise people have to trawl through old posts to make sense of replies.

The reason is so that old threads do not keep getting resurrected. The main culprits are new users who reply to posts often more than a year old. In quite a few cases, new users are giving advice how to fix a problem that was probably solved months ago.

In your case, you (almost certainly) would not have replied unless somebody had not resurrected the thread (leading you to think it was a current post).

You do have the option to ignore the advice but users should think if a new thread is appropriate e.g. Macrium and Acronis have changed commercially quite a bit and a lot of this thread is rather irrelevant now - surely much better to start a new thread based on the current commercial dictates?

Old Thread: Hello xxxxxx. There have been no replies in this thread for more than 30 days.
If your post is not directly related to this discussion, please consider making a new thread.

  • I know that this is an old thread, but I want to reply to it anyway.

Also old threads that get resurrected can get quite long threads and get very confusing with "time jumps".

Hi,

Also @hdmi why do you think that Macrium is kiddish tool?
For the most part, it's because it appears to persistently attract those who, with every chance they get, continue to talk like they don't grok much of the following:
  • There exists a (Linux based) bootable Rescue Media ISO file of Acronis True Image 2021 that does almost everything you need for making system images, reliably, with advanced features like incremental images (not possible with the free version of Macrium), creating an image while being allowed to pick a destination folder that is located on one of the partitions that will be part of the source selection (not possible with Macrium, free or paid), the ability to specify file/folder exclusions via the GUI (and with optional wildcards) as opposed to being forced by Macrium (free or paid) to edit the Windows registry for this task, and─last but certainly not least─the Verify image checkbox that makes it compare the data from the newly created image to the source data in an actual robust (i.e., anti-kiddish) manner.
  • This file is a free download from Acronis, and you do not need to install anything to make it work, as it's just a bootable ISO file
  • On a USB flash drive that has been formatted with Ventoy, you do not even need to unpack this ISO file, as you can just copy over multiple different bootable image files of pretty much whatever it is that you like, including e.g. the official Windows Installation ISO from Microsoft, your WinRE.wim file (with the Wimboot plugin for Ventoy), one or more custom WinPE images, live distros, etc..
  • The GUI you get after you boot into this bootable ISO file of Acronis is straightforward so it doesn't distract you needlessly while you have a lot of non-kiddish stuff on your non-kiddish mind
  • These people have a real tendency to ignore all of the things that I listed above, no matter how hard I keep trying to explain, like, it's almost as if they feel that intelligent people should hide their intelligence simply for the fact that it offends them somehow, and, entire posts including posts that contain links to help clarify about something that is relevant to the OP get deleted because I make harmless jokes when someone hates to see the truth about some part(s) of the topic described in the OP.
