First let me reference this thread here - How to create shortcut for the “paint” in the desktop? Post 31. I read this entire thread and found no answer for my problem. I was advised to create a new thread since there had been no replies to this one in over 30 days but thought I may get more response from that thread since it was along the same lines. So here is what I posted and would like help with if there are any suggestions.

The problem I would like advice on is my desktop shortcuts to both Paint and Media Player, (Both Microsoft Apps,) They both keep losing their identifying icons. I have deleted the IconCache and let it rebuild itself, doesn't seem to help those 2 shortcuts. I can quickly get them back by right clicking their app in the start menu and creating a desktop shortcut again, but I shouldn't have to do that. Seems this problem started happening maybe a month or two ago. I have used both apps for years with no problem like this. Any thoughts on how to fix this problem.

There was something in a Windows update about the way Store app icons work on the desktop, and since then I've had the same issue.
Whenever a Store app or game is updated it's icon goes 'blank' and has to be deleted and put back again

Thank you for that information. I guess I'm not alone, so maybe they will eventually fix it.

July 22, 2025's Preview Update (or wait until Patch Tuesday in August):
[Desktop icons] Fixed: If you have an app pinned to your desktop and it updates, the app icon might not display correctly and instead show a white page.

As we speak, my Photos app went white. I fixed it but hope August's update fixes the cause of the problem. For me, at least, it is a reoccurring problem.

July 22, 2025's Preview Update (or wait until Patch Tuesday in August):
This update has come to my PC but I have not installed yet, as I could not understand what is preview update. Is it equivalent to beta or stable update.

Patch Tuesday is the only Monthly Update that includes Windows security fixes. By MS policy, they can't be released ahead of the normal update cycle. But IT admins in large environments prefer testing any upcoming non-security fixes or changes before Patch Tuesday, to see if it breaks any of the software apps they support. They don't want an unexpected surprise.

The Monthly Previews are effectively the upcoming month's official update (minus the security fixes). It allows MS one last chance to beta test next monthly's update before it becomes official. For the most part, August's update will be identical to July's Preview.

Some users may be really annoyed by a broken feature, and decide they'll jump ahead and install the Preview and not bother waiting the 2-3 weeks for Patch Tuesday to arrive. This is why Windows Updates has the "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available" option.

Do you mean the installation of the update kept failing or something else kept failing after the update was installed?

2025-07 preview update , I did not install. Now I recd the final update on 14 Aug 2025. I installed this but Paint Icon is still blank. It means MS has not done anything in this update for blank icons issue.
